I did exactly that back in 2009 when we bought our house. Glad to say, it keeps the hot and cold weather out plus is makes my garage door look really nice inside, too! I sit in my garage all year long so, this insulation keeps me happy! I also did it all by myself within a few hours!

Think about it: 1. You insulated your garage doors so you can enjoy it when it is cold, 2. You did it yourself for $75. The added cost of armchair experts, 2 cents of criticism each (about 6 cents total), when you add your costs savings if you paid others to it...you are way ahead my friend. Great job. Criticism is like a few drops of water on your face, it drys quickly and no one will notice in 15 minutes.

Saw some people in the comments mentioning spring tension. This is something you should not adjust if you don't know what you are doing. I install garage doors for a living. I work hear for about 2 or 3 people every year who had an ER visit because they decided to wing it and do it themselves without doing a little research. As for the install. The door isn't balanced as well as it was before, but the difference is minor. As long as you can run the door manual, and it doesn't hit hard when it closes you're fine. Pretty much the same results as a pro install for a lot less money.

AWESOME JOB. Love your video. We wanted to insulate our garage door for the longest because we always work on our cars and then its so darn cold in the Garage, and the little electric heater we use in there is working its little heart out and just raise our electric bill. Thank you for all the info. Now we know what and how much we would need. I do NOT understand all these negative comments and thumbs down. Must be internet trolls. Thanks again Mark.

I did mine the same way when I bought my house though instead of using the correct thickness of foam (my door is about 2" "deep"), I used 1 1/2" foam and then went back over with 1/2" foam as the 1/2" foam is more flexible to get in easier. Very noticeable difference in heat retention though with that foam in place. As an added bonus, it makes the door not as flexible.

Did the same to my Garage door about 20yr ago and it is a fiberglass door I made the panels a friction fit at first but after a while they would move so I did the same as you and i used a foil HVAC tape it helps keep the summer heat out and keep the heat in when its cold out. Nice Job

I did mine with the pink foamular many years ago. Now that I have seen the way you did yours I’m thinking of redoing it! Very nice. And your right about not enough weight to make any difference with the springs. Ignore the RU-vid Engineer’s! Looks great! Thanks for the upgrade ideas!

I just finished my garage door last night. I followed all your directions, watched the video, and it turned out great. I paid $11.99 a piece for 4 of the 1 1/2 inch R-Tech sheets, and $10.97 for a roll of 3M foil tape. With tax, the job cost me $64. 58. The door is just slightly heavier than before, but even without an opener, it's still no problem to lift it up. It was hot in Washington State today, but my garage stayed cool for the first time in the 50 years I've lived in this house. Thanks Mark!

That's a rather great idea, and must surely assist with the heating/cooling costs of the main house if the garage adjoins it. It inspires me to get some of that polystyrene board, and insulate my own garage. That'd help with stopping the room above it both getting cold during the winter, and prevent the summer sun baking the garage and leaving a huge temperature swing between it and our SE Michigan A/C controlled house. A project I'd never considered, and now feel I absolutely need to complete!

When you apply foam that has foil on it, the foil should face the direction that the heat is coming from. If it gets hot outside, and you want to reflect heat out, and keep the inside of the garage from getting warmed up, then the foil should be facing the other way. If you're in a cold environment, and you want to reflect heat back into the house, then the foil should face inward.

Definitely worth it's weight in gold - probably one of the best $75 spent. You already notice the difference. When we had to replace our wooden garage door, it was a no brainer to go with the insulated tongue and groove door. Big difference in temperature.

I did the exact same thing in my garage. I tested the flammability of both sides, and the foil was a lot less flammable. I was hoping it wouldn't be flammable at all, but it had a very thin plastic coating that burned. The other side was way worse, though. The foil side would go out by itself, while the other side kept burning. I used a thinner board; about a half inch. It's working great.
@kenbayenssr7112
@kenbayenssr7112 Год назад
I just moved into a new home, three years after this video, Home Depot sells kits now that are grooved to bend already cut to fit width wise And with a little effort You can work the panels in behind all the 2 inch frame work on the door instead of cut and fit. As it stands in this video there are several 20 x 2 gaps in the door to still radiate heat or transfer cold with weep-holes to boot. One box 8 panels fits one car garage for approximately $63.
@scifithoughts3611
@scifithoughts3611 2 года назад
What’s unique about your approach versus the other videos is you showed how the cutting is done. Thank you for that. Also you showed how the taping is done. Awesome! For myself, I’m not sure I’d do the taping: it looked like a lot of work. Maybe it doubled the job. However: - I have seen videos that show some of heat is transferred in those spots that you taped so that should help keep the heat in or out. - the door looks really good as it’s all one shiny space age color rather than shiny panels with none shiny parts. So I’ll probably do it the same way you did. Thank you!
@detailguy01
@detailguy01 Год назад
The taping made a difference in my door. Before the taping I could feel a small amount of heat coming in around the edges. Not anymore. If you put the tape on in shorter lengths instead of trying to tape the whole length of the panel with one long strip, it works a lot better.

I cannot imagine living in your area and having such a flimsy garage door. I live in New England, and we mostly all have 1.5" thick foam filled garage doors. Your door is for someone who lives in a moderate temperature climate. Good thing you placed the boards with the foil side facing in. That way, the heat gets reflected back in, as it tries to escape. I did foam board on the entire lower level of my split level house (poly iso, a better R value), and then used a roll of 4' wide foil over the foam boards. I was lucky, and got the rolls for free. The guy also gave me many rolls of foil tape. So many, that when I re-sided my house, I first placed foil faced foam boards on the sheathing, and used the foil tape on all of those joints, THEN added new vinyl siding. Now my house is insulated very well, and I save on BOTH heating AND cooling.

Nice job there. I had done the same thing on my previous garage door (similar to yours) the only thing I did differently was to use a construction adhesive (Liquid Nails) and it was like that for ~12 years with the same 20 year old garage door opener, garage springs, etc... and never once had an issue with anything. Working in the garage, the Silver helped with the lighting I had to really brighten everything up and I painted the walls with a few coats of high gloss White paint. I have a drain in the middle of the floor, so I could wash the cars in the garage during the winter time while being nice and toasty warm. Again, nice job with everything you did there!

Looks great...only suggestion because I did this both ways...if available use the white sided foam, I say this because it reflects light back as white vs the darker silver color of the aluminum. The white made my garage look a lot brighter. But honestly what you did looks great from a heat aspect.

I'm in the market for a new garage door to replace the 49-year-old one-panel wooden door that I have, now. I can pay 2.5 times the amount for an insulated door or buy a cheaper one and insulate it myself, as you have done in this video. You made it look so easy and did it by yourself which was an inspiration to me. I'll be getting the cheaper door and will insulate it on my own. Thank you, sir, for thinking of others when making and uploading this video. Your finished project looks superb!

I did a similar install (spray foamed the gap, no tape). While I don’t have a thermal camera, I do have a thermometer in the garage. It varies depending on how hot or cold it is outside, but roughly 20 degrees different at 30 and 100. 50-80 degrees makes it year round usable for me.

Nice! Just finished doing this over the weekend. I added additional "ribs" for all the inset parts so there are no insulation breaks. The Lowe's R-tech 1.5" panels seem higher quality to me. R5.9 insulating factor..."guaranteed" according the manufacturer. I can't believe the difference this makes on a typical Arizona summer day. My garage was insulated except for the garage door (which faces South so takes a beating). At least 15-20 degrees cooler than before. Amazing difference.
@Marksmisfitworld
@Marksmisfitworld 4 года назад
I don't notice the difference in the summer because the door is opening and closing a lot during the day. But the winter there is a very noticable difference on what it is taking to heat the garage. My pellet stove heater is now turned down to the lowest setting, so I am burning 2/3 less pellets to heat the garage warmer than it was. Well worth the time and little bit of money to insulate the garage door.

Just completed same task... a two-door (16') and a one-door (8'). Took me over the weekend to get it all done. My doors have a steel reinforcer across the top that slowed me down, in addition to having to cut individual pieces around 6 window frames. And all the taping!! That was way more time consuming than I imagined. One thing I hadn't thought about... Summer. Our furnace/heat exchanger sits in the garage and during the summer that box blows out hot air while the inside is being cooled by the A/C. Crap. I may have just made the garage even hotter! Oh well, definitely a big help when it's cold.

Nice work. I want to do that to my door. They don't have the same insulation board at my Home Depot. It is a choice between 1" or 2" board from a different company. Thanks for the details about quantity of materials.

$75 That's a inexpensive way to insulate your doors and save on heating cost . The difference in a garage door that's insulated at the factory or non-insulated is a big cost. Great job
@kylehayes6432
@kylehayes6432 5 лет назад
That's because factory made insulated doors are a lot stronger. They use a thicker gauge of steel, and usually put an extra layer of steel on the back to conceal the polystyrene.

I do sales, service and installs on garage doors and garage door openers. First, if you order a foam back garage door it should only cost you an extra $100.00 for a double wide door and $50.00 for a single wide door. That being said garage doors order with insulation come with springs rated for the weight of the door. Now with the extra weight that you added your springs will now break sooner. $200.00, minimum for a new set of springs. Also the extra weight from your store bought insulation, you are causing your garage door opener to work harder, thusly burning out the motor really quick. Lowest price for a LiftMaster 7' chain opener with 2 remotes and a keyless entry: $425.00. Congratulations! You have now spent a total of $700.00! Not really a smart idea to insulate your garage door, now, is it?
@Marksmisfitworld
@Marksmisfitworld 5 лет назад
The door is 25 years old new heavier springs were put on it last year and a new 1/2 horse power belt drive opener was installed 3 years ago. The spring tension is set higher so the door opener is working like it should.

It's so funny. I'm watching this video in July in Phoenix. The temps coming up this week are about 115 F and my garage faces to the east so the garage is hot as #$%^ in the mornings. I am added this stuff for the opposite reason (although it does get chilly enough here in the winter (low in the upper 30s) for this to be beneficial for insulating against cold too.

Hey I live in phx as well as trying to find a way to insulate the garage, I’ve tried a few things but at this point I’m about to just put a a wall up. Did you finish and how did it work? I’ve seen the reflective paneling and this styrofoam stuff, both seem good.

Probably will help. Temperature changes cause condensation on machined surfaces and really encourage oxidization - reducing the difference in temp between the air and the tool will probably help.

I think it was great. I think I will make a couple additional cuts about 1/2 way through to allow some help in bending it in place. The only concern I have is not allowing it to float by using the tape. I know glue is terrible because it won't allow for expansion and contraction. If you haven't had any of those issues please let me know. I have a couple rolls of that foil tape I could use it it didn't cause any problems. Great job!! I'm not criticizing. Just trying to save any potential problems before I start. Either way, I hand it to anyone who's a DIY guy. It's probably much quieter too

the second best part of the insulation is it does help with sound barrier. so when me and the old lady get into an argument about when she asks me for money to get her toe nails painted. i don't get this procedure but it gets her out of the house for while and i can enjoy some smoke and some beers.
