We are insulating the roof...in a HAILSTORM no less! We wanted to take full advantage of the log cabin's beautiful cathedral ceiling, which is why we decided to leave the rafters and barn board sheathing exposed from the inside. This meant we couldn't insulate from the inside. Our only option was to place sheets of foam board insulation on TOP of the roof. In addition, we also laid the strapping in preparation for the roofing steel.

Truly amazing. I have watched your build since the beginning. Any one who wonders why it has taken years not months to build needs to go back to the beginning and watch the tremendous amount of work that has gone into this build. All this done in your spare time. And of course one can never forget the unending support of your father. Memories even for future generations to venerate. God's blessings to you and your family.

A fantastic way to start a Saturday is to see you and your Dad at work on this amazing cabin. When you first started laying the foam board, I was nervous about how you would get the top layer on. As always, you and your Dad are incredibly resourceful. Glad you both are safe and blessings to you, your Dad, your wife, and children. This is a work of love - you will love it for generations, and I love watching you accomplish it. A few people have mentioned a concern about ants getting into your foam insulation. I can suggest a borax paste mix. Mix water and borax to a toothpaste consistency. Roll the paste onto the foam board before putting down the metal. The borax will be eaten by the ants - taken back to their colony, given to the queen and ultimately wipes out the colony. This is the best way of keeping ants from going after the foam. Borax is safe to use around people and pets. Just an idea - God Bless!

It is so good to see you and your father getting that roof on before the weather gets real bad. The way you are doing things are perfectly done don't ever let anybody tell you different, yeah sure there are other insulation board options but come on now it's not a whole lot better than what you're using. I would say by the time you get that roof on there you're looking at probably in reality I would say a 200-year roof I know the metal has a 50-year warranty on it plus all the extras that you are throwing in with taping the joints and actually doing the whole Roofing ice guard pretty much says it all. A lot of people would probably say I'm crazy for saying 200 years but I'm telling you what I have seen the old galvanized metal last over a hundred years. I hope your family are all doing fine, my health has gotten a little bit better as they had changed my medications around a little bit so things are helping thank God. I know when it comes down to the bottom line that is the only reason why I am still around. He has plans for me, he always has had plans for me that's why I have lasted this long believe me when I say that to you. Anyway all The Outsiders stay safe StayWell and as always God bless.

Great question! I added "skips" in the bottom boards to allow water to escape. Moisture also drains underneath the boards easily enough as well.

The Outsider never seen this type of way of do the insulation. Interesting since as you say, it displays the inside. Just curious about the condensation. Will be a lot of heat at the top creating water running down. Best thing would maybe be to have ridged insulation boards that let the water run down freely.

Everyone keeps telling me there isn't much R value in 2 inches of styrofoam. I just keep asking, would you rather live inside a cooler, or a plywood box, in the winter? LOL

Styrofoam has a pretty darn high R value! not as high as celotex but that said, it's got a great R number per dollar

You’d better hope there is never a fire, that shit gives off toxic fumes. It doesn’t meet code in many places.

@@the_original_skytiger Blah blah blah. Of COURSE I hope there is never a fire! Who 'hopes' there is a fire in ANY home? Every home out there, including yours, is loaded with things that are going to make a fire even more dangerous, with toxic fumes.

@@selador11 I'm telling you, this is some nasty shit. don't say you weren't warned.

@@the_original_skytiger Ok, Karen, we are warned. What is your expectation? That we will tear out all our floors, walls and ceiling, and replace the insulation with something else? Really? Or are you just being an arse because you are on the internet, and you feel important when you do so?

Came here to say this. Carpenter ants will nest in the stuff, if they can get in.

Yes, I'm removing my foam board from the walls, it was full of ant tunnels, I would guess about 7 nests in just one wall. It also trapped moisture in and rotted out the wood underneath. This was due to a roof leaking over many years.

Anyone try PIR commercial foam, fire resistant unlike blue stuff. Band building yearly with diatemaceous earth to keep the ants and insects away.
