ABOUT ME
I grew up in a cabinet shop and was a born to be woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry I converted a few friends Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. Before I knew it I had my own business making people's ideas come to life. I design and build all kinds of custom wood work and vehicles here at my shop in Huntington Beach, California! Please email me solidwoodworx@gmail.com for more information.
Cheers, Brian

Pretty sure rockwool isn't actually wool...its a rock-based mineral fiber insulation comprised of Basalt rock and Recycled Slag. Basalt is a volcanic rock (abundant in the earth), and slag is a by-product of the steel and copper industry. The minerals are melted and spun into fibers. It is a much better choice than fiberglass insulation for van builds and its what I used for my van build.

I'm going to insulate my Chevy Astro basically the same way. First I'll attach some Noico squares to the walls (25%), then I'll glue on some Batt insulation, next comes the Great Stuff and finally a layer of Reflectix. After that I'll screw in the furring strips and attach paneling.

you're using sound proofing to insulate your van instead of comfortbatts?

Hello, I’m seriously considering this type of insulation. I didn’t see n your video the use of a barrier between the wool and your wall. Did u use sheets of plastic between your wool and walls? Thank you.

Would you insulate those window wells if you weren't putting in a window, if so how would you do that?
@SolidWoodWorx
@SolidWoodWorx 5 лет назад

Great vid as always! Did you use any insulation under the floor ply? Also I've heard insulating the ceiling holds too much heat in? Unless you do a lot of cold weather, it's always easier to keep warm.

Yes i did insulate under the floor.

I heard that Rock wool is not safe to be inside small spaces like in a van. Sheep wool is safe because it is natural wool.

It gets covered with paneling
@dennis.teevee
@dennis.teevee 3 года назад
that's what i read as well when researching for my van build. best is Havelock wool, then denim insulation. i went with denim for the side walls then eps foam board for the floor and ceiling.
@Trang-xq9fn
@Trang-xq9fn 3 года назад
@@dennis.teevee Demin is not moisture resistant. It loves moisture so you will end up with mold or mildew in the demin. Thinsulate is best for moisture repelling properties. I use that for my van ceiling where moisture is worst.
@Trang-xq9fn

@@SolidWoodWorx I heard that the tiny toxic debris could still make their way passed the paneling due to the constant vibration of driving. Most people are willing to chance it to save money.

@@Trang-xq9fn denim insulation is mold/mildew resistant. i'm not too worried about moisture so long as i have good air circulation (maxxair fan + windows) and dry heat (diesel heater).

Sorry to bother you, but I will be a complete amateur at this. First of all, thank you for this video! Secondly, would it be possible to stick the rock wool to the metal with spray adhesive, and then not cover it with anything else, if looks didn't matter? Or would that interfere with the insulative ability of it? I want air circulation to inhibit mold on the metal wall, and don't have the skills, time or tools to be fashioning wall panels. Thanks.
@SolidWoodWorx
@SolidWoodWorx 3 года назад
I would not because the lil fibers would be airborne all the time

Because the expanding foam often doesn't get enough air in a some confined spaces to expand properly, and where it does get enough air, it can expand and warp/distort your steel van wall panels. This foam can also take years to cure properly, and will continue off gassing toxic chemicals during that period. But it's your choice of course.

Rockwool is spun lava and steel ....... not sheep's wool, ... not that you said that...
