@hatecel I don't hate Arch and window managers. I also used i3, sway, awesome, qtile, and other windows managers on Arch for several months, but then I noticed that most of my time was spent configuring my window manager and fixing problems. Now, I'm using GNOME on Debian bookworm. May not exciting like very customizable and beautiful tiling window manager, but I can focus on my works and projects very well.

i just find that you treat linux how it really is for a normal user and not some high tech person. it really helps you know that linux is very easy to set up these days. just stick with the big guns distros and they are highly intuitive.
I am right there with you. I see there is an unofficial way to use rclone but I really just want a simple system. All these services are cautious to support linux for storage because they know a lot of Linux users are power users. Like how a guy working at Backblaze said a client would be super easy to make. I think I would understand if there were different rules and pricing for Linux, I just want the services. It is okay to tell Linux users we cannot upload 10tb of data for $10 a month, I won't be offended. Just give me some service options.
Honestly, this doesn't have much to do with the topic in the video but I have to say that even though there are some hiccups, I absolutely love using Linux now. I switched my desktop computer over so now the only thing still using Windows is the server itself. I always get excited when I see a new Linux video from you because I know it's going to be high quality content without a lot of talking and going off the beaten path. I'm a busy guy these days and I don't even have time to make new content for my own channel, so I really don't have time for a half an hour video or more talking about one simple subject that could be explained in a few minutes. But you don't do that and that's why I love your content very much and I'm happy to be on the Linux train, Windows to me feels so dirty now. 😂 But the freedom of customizing my OS and not being under MS surveillance is very appealing to me. However, there is one thing that really irks me and it's not truly the fault of anyone but the fact that Linux is ever evolving, when you search for something, whether it be an issue you're having or something else, you often find posts about it that are 2 years old to sometimes even 10 years old and completely irrelevant now. Either way, I don't see myself going back to Windows and Linux is just going to get better and better as time goes on.
Another way to synchronise files with Google Drive is to use Celeste (a GTK Flatpak application). When I tried it, it crashed, but that doesn't matter as I only use Nextcloud anyway. By the way, Celeste can also sync with Nextcloud and a few other cloud providers. However, I recommend using the official Nextcloud desktop client.
Using Linux Mint 22 and for Google Sheets I installed a web app (as well as tv/movie streaming services like Prime, Hulu, RU-vid, RU-vid Music, etc). Everything else I have used Firefox with ad block extension. I like them as a web app so far as it removes the address and bookmark bar.
3:14 let me give a note on Kubuntu users or those distros who didn't ship KDE Gear 24.05.2 currently, they going to gave a big problems with gdrive. It is very broken. You cannot not access any folder and will throw folder not found error. Good news is that KDE has already fixed in KDE Gear 24.05.2. Fedora or Arch btw or any rolling or semi-rolling distros should have provided the latest update with KDE Gear 24.05.2. It should be good now, or at least many people confirmed that it is fixed and even me too. (pin this btw for good reasons)
The built in integration works well in Gnome (for Google), but when I tried on KDE, it was very buggy. The Google Drive didn't load correctly and calendar would fail to load many times. It's a shame, I hope KDE works on this integration some more. This is a handy workaround until that time comes.
Yeah, I honestly think that they should drop the current implementation altogether and move to something like Merkuro uses. Maybe even provide a base which it can hook in altogether
KDE plasma is miles behind in terms of account integration. You have to log into all apps to get them to show up. 1 account = mail, calendar, and drive so 3x times the effort. And even that is a hit or miss. I hope they address it soon
When you show webpages could you please use a 'dark reader' or something similar. Viewing these late at night makes them literal flash bangs. Thanks, otherwise great content!
Why don't you just mount rclone drives to a folder? I have a cloud folder in my home directory and mount all my cloud drives into subfolders. This way I can work with them like if there were local folders and everything is unified and doesn't need 10 different apps.
Rclone is a command line tool, which I generally refrain from showing to newcomers. Once they are familiar with Linux, it's pretty easy to implement, but as an initial impression it's not something they are interested in
I never had my (Google) Calendar integrated with any app or widget prior to using Linux. It was super easy to get up in running in both Mint and Fedora. I have Google Drive setup in KDE and it works great. It was broken for a while when I first switched to Fedora, but at some point it was fixed and everything works perfectly, even weird scenarios like opening Drive files in PWAs. So, seems to work now, but definitely not shortage of bugs.
Interesting that LMDE doesnt seem to include WebDAV in its online accounts like Mint Cinnamon does, although it is easy to add via 'connect to server...' option in nemo. There is a Web Apps flatpak application that allows you to create web apps and then assign any browser to open them. it includes the option to either have a toolbar or not. The ultimate web account manager for accessing files is rclone. It is incredibly powerful, and with the optional GUI interface or rclone browser it is easy to integrate online accounts as mounted drives in the file browser. I've recently been tinkering with these, and they would make an excellent topic for a RU-vid video!!
I tried Gnome with Fedora for a few hours but moved back to KDE Fedora because for some reason the Gnome store was exceptionally slow to load. Like minutes and I was unsure why. While in Fedora KDE it is mere seconds. Gnome felt extremely clean though and, aside from needing to adjust the minimize/maximize/exit area for windows, it felt really welcoming out of the box.
Great guide, thanks! Have you also solved the problem of garbled file names when attaching a file from Google Drive on Thunderbird or other email clients? Same problem even when trying to open a file from Google Drive in some text editors.
@@MichaelNROH oh man. I’ll have to look into rsync and Google drive. This is actually the only thing stopping me from replacing windows with Linux right now. Thanks for the video btw!
after connecting cloud services why are credentials not saving after rebooting the PC? I need to login again and again. also for vs code github copilot doing same thing
i wish there is file manager that integrates well with mega sync yeah there is mega for linux program but i would like in dolphin to work i know there is extension but dosent work at all try it offical from site and AUR
Not everyone cares about that and it's important to many who are migrating from other systems. I usually only use cloud storage as a compressed and encrypted backup storage while my actual files are on a local server. Setting this up is very simple, but not if someone has no clue what they are doing, while still wanting to sync everything anywhere
And how do I sync with my phone with it when I'm not at home? Or how do I work with others on files or share my documents with my co-workers? I get the idea of privacy and security but sometimes other features are more important. Also why should I maintain a Homeserver when Google does it for me?
Some clips (The whole section from 3:26) look really ugly, like they are from a VM without graphics accel. Maybe set up a dual boot with Kubuntu or record them from a live USB, because this looks like how non-Linux users probably imagine Linux looks in the worst way possible.
I usually just connect my phone via bluetooth and it just works. Not sure if every device or Android version enables this by default or if it works with iphone though
I know that icloud supports IMAP for email but I'm not sure if it also exposes the files. You can try to connect to it and and see if the files toggle appears
@@digi-world-gen4254 Unfortunately everything you can get out of iCloud is, Mail/Calendar/Contacts via IMAP with an application specific password Everything else is only accessible via the browser. If you have configured 2FA, Security Keys and or Advanced Security, it even gets a step harder in the browser, the FIDO2 keys only work with Chromium based browsers, no Firefox support on Linux. But at least you can access everything including the drive there then.
I love Plasma, but online accounts there suck heavily. I also avoid calendar apps just because of akonadi server, that constantly breaks, even when you don't touch it. It's enough to update the system and all akonadi apps won't work. I used it for years and it was OK... but at some time it started breaking more and more, till I got tired of fixing it and banned akonadi with all apps from my computer. I'm surprised you didn't mention native dropbox or megasync apps, or even Next Cloud, or how to integrate with One Drive. A bit incomplete video. As an overview, fine, but when it comes to details, it fails to deliver.
You should ask him for your money back then if you're not happy with the service 🤨 Also, he does talk about installing the native apps at around 04:42 😉
There are two kinds of linux users. Those who use linux for security and privacy and then there are those who don't care about their privacy and security.
It's very unfortunate that iCloud Drive doesn't work on Linux. Thats the missing piece to be able to access my notes on all devices. I hope someday someone will develop a solution
