Is it a good idea to run a Intel I9 13900K on a B class chipset motherboard such as the MSI B760 Tomahawk Wifi DDR4? Well is seems that for most people the answer is very much YES!
But let me explain why.
Pros
Great board with lots of features
Saves £100 over the Z790 version
Excellent VRM performance (around 50c under full load)
Ability to limit thermal maximum to regulate temps
Easy to switch cooling modes from Box Cooler to Tower and AIO and also control limits
Undervolting is possible

As an itx builder, I look for better cooling and temps with a minute reduction in performance so undervolting and tweaking GPU power is a thing I find very useful and handy.

Great Video. I Literally had this ready to install in my build, woke up yesterday and decided to change my mind at the very last minute, and bought the DDR5 version and also some Corsair vengeance DDR5 RAM. They will be delivered today, so I can crack on with my build soon. Just the joys of sending the old motherboard and RAM back, but I guess thats just part of the building experience.

@@mikesunboxing Yeah that was my thoughts on it. It was literally a last minute decision, but I got the DDR5 for a really reasonable price considering It's 32gb aswell. I know If I hadn't changed It, It would have done my head in further down the line haha when DDR5 becomes the standard for today.

Thanks Mike for the review. I have recently discovered your channel and it has been a great help to me. I had been doing some research to change my micro and motherboard and I had decided on this MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk Wifi DDR4 plus an i7-13700KF and from what I see in your videos it has been a good choice. I am going to replace an i7-7700K that together with an RTX3080 still allowed me to play everything in 4K (Even Flight Simulator 2020 ;-) ) but that is already starting to be at the limit, so it will be a good jump in performance . Thanks for the look-see, Mike. 👍 I just pulled the trigger on an *i9-13900T* (which I couldn't find anywhere in the US; I bought it from *Quiet PC* in Leeds) for use with my ASRock H670M-ITX/ax motherboard in the NZXT H210i case. (I don't yet know what I'll do with the i7-12700T that I already have, but I imagine I'll find a use for it at some point.) The *T* version of the i9-13900 benchmarks somewhere in between the i9-12900K and the 12900KS, but at less than HALF the maximum rated power draw of either of them (106W). I call that a "No Brainer" any day of the week. 🤔😲🤗 P/S: I got my MUB t-shirt. It looks and fits GREAT but the problem is that when I'm wearing it, I have to explain to everyone I know that, _'No, I'm not _*_that_*_ Mike.'_ 🤣 EDIT: Typo Management.

Thanks Mike for the review. It's nice to have a reasonably priced, high-performing motherboard for 13th gen i7 and i9 with gamer-friendly looks and a full complement of features. There's no reason a gamer would ever need Z790.

I absolutely disagree: a MSI Z790 board should be the only board to use with a i9 13900k. This CPU is a energy-wise a killer. Only MSI has the option "Lite Load" That easily undervolts the CPU without any loss of computing-power. It can reduce the power-consumption down to 2/3 of the normal values. This goes together with the heat that the CPU produces. Unfortunately this does not work with the B760 chiptset. The only chipset, which supports Lite Load on the 13th generation is the Z790. And these are the recommended boards for the 13th generation CPUs to reduce the power consumption and the over-all power-load, which is immense incase of the i9-13900k.

The 12900K can be picked up second hand new for as little as £200 on-line. I going Gigabyte B760 Gaming £120 ish and going to clock the memory on a 13400. or suck up the cost of a New platform and go DDR4 7700 or intel 13th gen. but that is painfully expensive CCL isn't as cheap as they was I notice since more people are aware of them their price haven't been as competitive lately. I love the easy site they have though. Wattage is a big issue in UK as you know Gas & electric is criminal prices.

There’s seems to be many users saying they’re using K-sku CPUs with B-series motherboards …..even with older gen Intel rigs 😇👍. You mentioned in this video about ridiculous pricing of a few £ difference between K/KF/Non-K CPUs … that’s the same here in Australia 🇦🇺 and the same with AMD with their X-sku and non-X sku CPUs …… being a few $$$ Aussie dollars difference …… all these cpu makers are copying Ngreedias methodology of upselling you to a higher spec product as it’s affordable to upgrade to and crazy not to.

With such performance why would you overclock! Absolutely no need with great results out of the box. The undervolt and tuneability ensures lower heat lower costs and greater longevity which itself imo is especially important with such an outlay. But then for purely gaming is there any need to go above 13600. Interesting review Mike and Kath 🐈👍

Thanks, and completely agree. 99% of people want cooler temps, undervolt a bit so Z boards have limited value. That said, there is a grey area between mid to upper level b760 and lower- mid z790 boards in terms of price and sometimes not a great price premium between the two. I wish there was a motherboard selector database online and you can sort by vrm, features, etc.

Great review Mike and Lady Kath. I bought an i7-12700k on Amazon US a few weeks back when they were on sale for $254.00. Now they are back up to the $315.00 range. Jay Z has an interesting video on how to under volt the 12th Gen i9. I have a basic Gigabyte H610 board with a 6+1+1 power delivery. So the under voltage would work great for me? nice cpu Rick, and the undervolting will be very useful and reduce the overall load on the motherboard, i would possibly suggest the easiest method is to tell the motherboard you are using the box cooler and then it limits the board pretty hard and still performs pretty well

I kinda can’t decide between Asus TUF B760 Plus Wi-Fi DDR4 and this MSI Tomahawk B760 Wi-Fi here. Read a ton of reviews and all of them say that those are both of decent quality, in particular in the vrm cooling department. They cost exactly the same down to a penny where I’m at as well.

@@mikesunboxing vice versa for me in terms of ecosystem - I’ll be getting ASUS TUF 4070 with a ASUS Strix PSU (not a huge fan of ASUS, the matching vendor is a coincidence just based on the reviews and the tons of information I went through while picking the parts), but I still can not make it easier of a choice because there is just so many praising reviews for Tomahawk B760 and not a whole lot of reviews for ASUS TUF B760 good or bad. Seems like people either pick a more budget friendly option or go straight for the Strix ASUS version of B760, so the TUF lineup of products does not get much attention

Tried this board and you can not adjust any of the standard OC features in the bios like voltage or multiplayer The only thing you can adjust is the wattage and the amps it draws.

In my city z790 Tomahawk is currently around 265 € and 190 € for b760. Wondering what's better for 14700k or 13700k, are "more lanes" of z790 worth it (MSI z790-a max or z790 Tomahawk)? I understand correctly that it's possible to change PL1 and PL2 manually filling integers b760 tomahawk bios? Thinking about 14600k || 13700k || 14700k, 48 Gb DDR5 cl32 6400mgz (G.Skill Ripjaw, because in the meantime i ordered the kit and that's how it started...), mobo x?, MSI a850g psu, Arctic LC 360 and gpu, it will depend maybe 4060 Ti 16 || 4070 || 4070 Super seems very interesting , but still waiting for the price tag. As I'm still on my i5-6500 with 16 gb ram, which still performs with multitasking, but becoming rather slow, thinking if now is good time to make a little bit bigger investment in PC for say - 4 to 5 years, or wait for NPU + CPU era....? Probably 14600k is super enough for 2 to 3 years, but after that won't be 14700k overhead with better GPU just right?

Get the best you can afford at the time. 14700k is probably the best option at this time with 4070 super or ti super which is basically a 4080.

I’m building a gaming/ future proof pc right now and I bought a b760m board thinking I was doing a mid-end build at first. I ended up ordering the 13900k and a rtx4070 and now I’m wondering if I went too low end with my motherboard? Do you think you could help? Do I need to have more power available as this only has a power phase of 7+1.

is VCCSA voltage still locked even when using a K processor? i know that non-K CPUs lock that voltage, but don't know whether the same limitation exists on K SKUs on B760 boards.

the CPU SA voltage can be changed in the mode selection and also directly changing the voltage if that helps? this is with the 13900K installed

not gonna lie, I feel like everybody says buy the z series motherboard for the k series cpu, and I hate it. unless your doing custom water cooling and can cool 350+ watts without thermal throttling, then yeah, 1000% z series. If not, then set an undervolt, set watt limits so that its not on the cliff of fate, and let her eat.

Why does this board (and in general B660/B760 boards) get 3k less score in CB R23? With Z boards I see R23 results around 39k.

I'm looking into this issue myself specifically for this reason, I heard somewhere it's b series mobos don't allow for overclocking so it can't boost(?) like z series boards. I'm getting 1600s mc score in cb r24 when i should be getting around 2100. Its fine enough obviously for gaming and productivity but it feels like a waste if im missing out on so much performance and given the power usage/heat, it doesnt make much sense for me

@@ijustyap There is some undervolt protection (UVP maybe) in B boards that increases vCore to a point where the cpu will throttle therefore you will get lower scores in longer benchmarks. I don't remember the exact settings but on MSI and maybe on ASUS B boards it is possible to disable this protection. I don't remember the name of this thing, but you should look for something like this.

to be honest most modern CPUs are near the max that they will go so overclocking is less of a free performance option. I would rather a quality lower tier board than a lower tier Z class board i think, unless i needed extra PCie lanes or something

36k in his test result, most likely due to reaching 100C which caused thermal throttling, some additional decrease could be due to weaker VRMs of the mobo

no you can't but most modern CPUs are heavily overclocked from the box, and really need to be tuned not overclocked, you can tune a processor with this board

it throttled due to reaching 100C , also potentially VRM of the mobo isn't good enough for 13900k, on one website it's even stated that vrm of B760M Mortar can't handle 13900K on full load without throttling or some extra cooling on VRMs, which uses same VRM as B760 Tomahawk

@@mikesunboxing The main issue is I can't get custom voltage offsets. Only way ive found to keep it under 100c is by lowering total wattage to 200w short and long duration, which pins it to 90c on full load. I'm thinking I should be able to save around 10c once I get something that lets me modify my offset per clock ratio. But first i'm going to try a EK Nucleus AIO CR360 and a contact shield. Though I may grab a GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS Master X anyway just because it would be nice to one day have a gen 5 m.2 and a gen 5 gpu both working at full x16 speed

ok it appears there is not a motherboard that can do gen 5 x16 with a gen 5 gpu + gen 5 m.2 because as far as I can tell the 14700kf only has 16 pcie gen 5 lanes. Guess im sticking with the tomahawk, the cooling solutions should be enough
