This is a tutorial of the Intellijel uScale II eurorack module. This is a quantizer module which has two outputs that allow you to generate musical harmonies. It also features a shift CV input which can be assigned to different destinations. In general it allows you to shift notes using CV. In this video I'm using the Kilpatrick Phenol as a sound source (off camera). I use the Make Noise Maths and Korg SQ-1 as CV sources for both the note pitch and the Shift CV input. The uScale II can behave as a standard quantizer if you ignore the menu section. The menus provide control over how the Shift input behaves as well as settings the Output B interval, root note, managing scales and banks and clearing the scale. It's a pretty fun little module because it can take any kind of whacky voltage signal and turn it into something musical and inspiring.

Man thank you for this. I've had this module for a while but could not find a decent video explaining all the functions. I was thinking about getting rid of it until I found this video, now I've got tons of new ideas in how to incorporate it into my system

I have sat there looking at my uScale for 10 weeks without a clue how to tackle it so thanks for the video. Its blazed a trail for me. I run a random voltage from a woogle bug into it, is there a way of limiting the octave range at all. I would like to avoid the canine frequencies if possible, but do not wish to turn down the cv coming out of the wogglebug because its buffered into other stuff. I have lots of random stuff happening elsewhere so still need full whack. I have tried passing it thru a LP filter but i dont want to lose the note entirely, just want to cut out the ear piercing. Thanks in advance.
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
That's a good question. I don't think there's a way to limit the octaves on the uScale itself. Have you tried first running the signal through an attenuator and then into the uScale? (you could still keep your original signal for other destinations).

Ok, thanks, i will give it a go. I could use maths i think!

This is in deed a wonderful explanation. I want to get into modular synthesis this year and this video definitely made me loose my fear of too much chaotic noise! :)

Dude, too much music theory and too little modular fart noises :D j/k... thanks for a great demo, been looking at this one (have the sonic potions penrose as loaner atm, but have to replace it when the owner wants it back). cheers, keep it up !

Great tutorial. Was looking for this since reading manuals is hard work! Honestly though, the facecam is a bit unnecessary. I love mylarmelodies videos and all I see are his hands. I´d much rather listen to your voice while looking at the module (not because you´re bad looking ;) just doesnt serve the video)
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback, to be honest the face cam is more work for me so if it's not that useful I might consider ditching it for these tutorials.

Hey thanks a bunch for the great tutorial, i just got one and this helps very much. Which quantizer do you prefer the uScale or the TipTop Audio? Cheers
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
Thanks! Both have pros and cons. I slightly prefer uScale because of the interval output. Otherwise they are both really good and fully functional.

Does anyone know how to choose/enter the shift values when using Pre-Scale, Shift Target A+B? Banging my head hard against the manual, pages 9 & 10.

Thank you! Your videos are well produced. I have the worst time figuring out the logic of "hidden menus." Bank and Scale info starts at #t=10m39s. Is this a 12 X 12 array or is it just 12 BANKs and 12 SCALEs. The twelve BANKS are editable, the 12 SCALES are locked/factory set?

Ok.great tutorial on the Uscale. However the scale button gives you access to 12 different scales? what are they? are they listed somewhere? Can't find any mention of what the scales are in the manual. ,

Thank you. This is the best explanation of quantizatizer for modular that I have heard. Before this, I was used to the sampling explanation which, to me, meant taking a live imperfect drummer and making the drum sequence timing perfect

great video! quick question, what is the easiest solution to integrate the Killpatrick Phenol into the eurorack environment? I’d really like to do the same! are you using banana to 1/8 cables?

So if i set shift to pre-scale and route it to B only, does that mean i can use module as two independent quantizers? Set to same scale of course.

hey there, thank you for your work! could you may inlight me with the following: is it possible to change the root note of a scale by 1V/Oct? the result i am looking for is, i do play a scale (lets say min. pentatonic) with C as a root and than play an other note like F on an external device and the whole scale shifts into an min. pent. with the root note F... Thank you very much! cheers
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
That's a good question. The only way to change the root is via the buttons or via the Shift CV input. I'm not sure if the Shift input tracks V/Oct, I haven't heard that mentioned in the manual. If I ever try this out with a keyboard as a source I'll report back.

Great video, I especially like 25:18 - 25:37 - that part resembled an actual musical piece without the use of a sequencer or a keyboard controller. It seems like it would be possible to use just the uScale II and a modulating voltage source (like the Maths) plus an oscillator for live performances. Am I right?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yup, random voltage + quantizer is basically like a generative composition. Adding some occasional S&H to tame the randomness can help keep things from sounding too robotic.
