MAKE NOISE MATHS TUTORIAL ~ Eurorack analog computer module

This is a tutorial of the Make Noise Maths eurorack module. This module is described as an analog computer. It's a CV processor on steroids which can act as an LFO, an envelope generator, a lag processor, a CV mixer, etc. Essentially you have 4 inputs which can be summed, OR'd or inverted as a group. Each one can be attenuated and inverted independently. In addition, two of the channels have rise and far slew rate controls for extra control.

It is crazy that having so many examples, this one using only an lfo and a sinewave, and without an oscilloscope, is the clearest of all. Many thanks!

Thanks for this terrific run through. I recently put together a rack which includes Maths and found it impenetrable. Looked at many RU-vid videos but none of them explained what was happening or had too many unidentified modules connected to it so I couldn't replicate their patches. Yours is simple and clear and look forward to your other tutorials. Well done!

I like to think of it as a dual universal slope generator flowing into a 4-channel attenuvering mixer. But I really enjoyed your graphical presentation. Edit: I think peaks is just as deserving of a 30 minute video as maths. It may not be as confusing to understand, but it is just as useful.

if sum is the equation ax1 + bx2 + cx3 + dx4, then it can essentially be thought of as the dot product {a,b,c,d}.{x1,x2,x3,x4}. So if you think of each attenuverter as the component of a vector, and each of the channels as the component of another vector, then the sum operation multiplies their two magnitudes and the cosine of the angle between them. or in other words: it projects one vector onto the other and multiplies their resulting magnitudes. crazy! Imagine the kind of complex math you can do with this if you really analyze what's going on each of the channels. Their voltages vary, but in ways that can be related to each other. This is really cool.

I have a bunch of semi modular synths and am looking, primarily, at a case full of tasty utilities and, of course, Maths is right on top of the list but I’m torn between this and Befaco Rampage? Eventually I’d like both but, which one would you, and anyone else, recommend I get first? Great video man, a new sub for thee here, cheers! 👍

I enjoy your videos.. but I gotta say, by the time you're patching an LFO from Peaks to channel 1, all could think was.. "There's an LFO right there on channel 4!" If you want a waveform LFO, use the Unity or Ch4 output. If you need a square, use the EOC out. The self-patching potential is what makes Maths so good. Anyhow, keep up the good work.

Amazing video. Thank you. Question for the masses, if I went another direction and bought a Function or Contour1 (basically Maths ch 1 or 4 only) Would I miss not having the rest of the Maths functions? are most people using all functions simultaneously ie the mixer, both slope gens, attenuators, etc? Im aware that it all depends on what Im trying to do. Just wondering in a real world scenario. This would be for noodling in the house, not creating the next masterpiece to give to the world😄. Just looking to save a bit of space and cash.
@caydilemma3309
@caydilemma3309 2 года назад
Well first thing to realize is that you’re not actually getting the full 1st and 4th channels of Maths, because neither Function nor Contour has built in attenuation. If you already have a ton of attenuation, inversion, offset, and mixing in your setup then you could probably do without some of the logic stuff especially if you don’t do generative patching or use complex modulation by combining multiple sources. However, if you don’t have a lot of utilities, you’ll probably be patching and think “damn, I wish I had another attenuator/mixer/offset voltage” and that’s where Maths comes in clutch. The best way to get the most out of a Maths like module in the least HP is probably the Cosmotronic Delta V which is two function generators and two VCA’s in 10hp.

Can the SUM be much greater than 10 volts, i.e. 30 volts? Can other modules safely handle more than 10 volts, i.e. the Moog Mother32? Your mathematical explanation has benefitted my understanding of this Maths module, exponentially. Tnx.

@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 5 лет назад
The cycle input simple toggles the cycle on or off. it's like a gate input for pressing the cycle button. So as long as a gate is high in this input it will keep looping. The trigger input actually triggers the function. Hope that makes sense.

So let me get this straight. The "S" output on the left is the shape (from the rise and fall) and the "1" output is the input signal on channel 1 attenuated by the same shape?
@samlevine9639

The S output (actually more of a old-timey F; this is the mathematical symbol for a function) and the 1 output both output the same thing, but the 1 output can be attenuated positively or negatively

Question: Why is it that I can't independently envelope or LFO amplitude using a gate without it controlling pitch? Seems pitch is always being manipulated when enveloping a gate. Am I missing something or is this an elephant in the room. And therefore can it not replace an ADSR effectively?

mathematical bleeps and burps and farts. Personally I like your more melodic use of this gear. The more and more esoteric modules, it seems like not only do people go down deep financial holes, but never really get to master anything. And unless, one takes a photos of all the knob and patch cable positions, Its unlikely that, if one does create something musical(assuming that is even a goal) then they would never be able to get that patch back again. Of course, some people like our author here, actually might be able to, because he has a unbelievable knowledge of how gear works. IMHO of course. Oh the love of Modular :-)
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
Yeah modulars are interesting beasts. I definitely need much more practice with it in order to coax something other than bleeps and bloops out of it. My goal with this eurorack box is to explore more experimental sounds because I already have too many traditional synths. I think the key for me will be utilizing a quantized sequencer or a standard keyboard and making modulation much more subtle. I was listening to this podcast the other day where they mentioned that modulars should be treated like traditional instruments in that you need lots of practice to get it to sound good. The problem is most people swap out module and re-configure the modular too often so it becomes harder to master one setup. Hopefully with enough patience and practice I will end up with something more melodic and pleasing. Thanks for the feedback!
