After passing through Snow's Cut we entered The Cape Fear River and got pulled over by Harbor Patrol at Sunny Point. We stop at Southport Marina to get a shower but arrived too late and have to continue on even though something is wrong with the motor. Finally we make it to The Pipeline Canal Basin Anchorage in Southport, NC on Dutchmans Creek.
Help to keep the party going!

I remember 35 yrs ago we got our first VHS camcorder, went out on Lake Michigan in 6-8FT waves. The waves were crashing over the top of our 30FT cabin cruiser. We made a 30 min movie of the bad waves. Later when we watched the video we were surprised at how hard it was to tell how big the waves were. Later in this video they did get some 2-3 footers.

Oh gosh opposing tide and winds are the worst! A few helpful tips 1) Download Marine Traffic on your iPad or phone, ships like will update AIS with the port they’re bound for, so it’ll help you to stay out of the way 2) Also now that you have a VHF radio, check the manual because sometimes they have a setting that monitors both 13 and 16 at the same time. 13 is the channel inspected vessels will call you on first if you’re in danger of collision, or if they need you out of the way. 3) When ships get underway they will make a Securité call on 16 stating where they are going and how, so that’s another way to stay informed in channels like that and it helps avoid any confusion.

He was afraid those waves would break his boat in two? Was he kidding? That's like driving two miles an hour and worrying your tires are going to blow, then with his engine laboring with a steady oil pressure light he continues on admitting after all it's been through the motor needs a rest. It's a wonder it didn't seize. I've watched from the beginning and I do not believe there is a single lifejacket on that boat. Also he is not familiar with even the basics of seamanship and navigation. For sure he's got a big heart and a lot of fortitude but he is risking the life of that sweetheart he is married to. Someone should take him aside and explain the dangers that he is involved with. He could at least have read a book or watched a few videos on seamanship before starting out. I'm afraid one of these days they're going to fall off the radar and we'll never hear from them again. Remember "Fearless Fritz Frandell" canoeing from NJ and crossing the Gulf with a few cases of canned peaches thinking that's all he'll need.

Hey guys, I have watched all your videos and find them very entertaining. So will you PLEASE do a couple of things for me. 1. Wear a PFD = Personal Flotation Device also referred to as a "Life" jacket. 2. Tie a length of para-cord or other light line between your PFD and that red safety thingy called a safety switch on your motor. That way when you fall overboard you will kill the engine and give you a chance of getting back aboard. 3. Practice a MOB (man overboard) drills. Throw a Life jacket or cushion over and see how long it takes to recover it. Both of you need to be able to rescue the other. Remember you will need another one of those red safety thingies to replace the one you took with you when you went overboard so you or your wife can get the engine re-started to rescue you. With no lifelines or stern pulpit it is only a matter of time until someone makes a misstep.

Motors don't really need "rest" as long as the oil level is good and it has a source of coolant, water, to keep it from overheating it's better for them to run long periods. Ideally not at full throttle though but outboards are designed to be run at high throttle. Really if you want/need a lower maintenance outboard get a two stroke and mix the oil/gas beforehand.

The red light is oil pressure. Start with checking the oil level. Even if that's good, change the oil and the filter regardless, running if for a while with low oil isn't good for your motor. . If it's still on after that, you have bigger problems, like a failed oil pump, clogged passages or bad bearings. You need to either cut your losses with that motor (sounds like a longer shaft would be a good idea ) or pro help. Continuing on with that light on is an invitation to engine failure.
@9to5less
@9to5less 4 года назад
We really do need a longer shaft but will try to make this motor last as long a possible. Thanks for the tips!
@Edrichmond
@Edrichmond 4 года назад
It is an invitation to failure, agreed. I do believe you re on the mark regarding the red light. It also represents the only item between them being safe, and them being in possibly life threatening peril and possibly being dragged out into the open ocean. They are not equipped properly for this journey. In a worst case scenario, they could completely lose propulsion. I absolutely agree they should heed the warnings of others here an immediately check the oil, change the filter and thoroughly look over that engine. I have great respect for these kids, they are following their dreams, but I do think an alternate means of propulsion may mean the difference between them making the journey safely, and possibly life threatening concequences. For that reason, I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. Between 20000 subscribers, it should be more than possible to fund a replacement/backup motor for their journey maybe a long shaft. I'm not entirely sure I would have left that marina you were at before obtaining one if the engine was giving any indication of difficulty. Step 1: service your existing motor. If you dont have a filter you need to mae your nearest source of marine supplies. You are close enough to land to get ashore, and get transportation to such a place. IT may mean some phone calls. Step 2: Establish a gofundme or similar method so your subsccribers can get some funding to you. Step 3: use these funds to obtain a backup /alternate motor ( preferably a long shaft) in good functional condition, then, if used, service it BEFORE you bring it aboard to make sure that it is in top operating condition Step 4: follow all maintenance recommendations for the new motor. You have clearly exceeded the maintenace interval on that motor. Dont do this gain, and never leave the dock without tools and parts necessary to do so
@EricUdell
@EricUdell 4 года назад
@@9to5less As a fellow boater on the ICW ( just south of Jacksonville right now) I can tell you engine maintenance is important, particularly if you've only got one motor. An oil/filter change is easy and cheap ( maybe $10 for a quart of oil and a filter) on that motor and should be done every 100 hours. The instructions are in the manual which is available as a PDF for free online. It's also important to check the lower unit lube and change it every 100 hours, more often if it comes out milky, because that means it's contaminated with water. Finally, every 300 hundred hours you should change the impeller that pumps cooling water through the motor. This is also pretty easy to DIY, but will require the engine be out of the water. If you're using the motor regularly, this interval can be stretched to once a season, but if you don't know when it was last done, it needs doing NOW. Regularly doing all three of these tasks is pretty important. Keep a log of your travels, one entry daily. Put in the log all maintenance you do and engine hours each day. This can be just a notebook or a digital document, but it's also important. I'm not terribly concerned about safety if your engine were to quit, the ICW is pretty protected and nearly all of it has cell service, and a well maintained four stroke outboard can be very reliable.

Hey guys, did you get the red light situation sorted? My guess would be an oil top-up, but I’d be keen to hear its fixed. ‘Dutchman Creek’ is the best name for a place to stop ;)
@9to5less

Hahaha. Yea you WOULD like that creek lol!! That’s hilarious!.. Now that the dinghy is pumped up we can use it to check the oil easier

i sure hope all the pumping mud didn't hurt the water pump, its never good to grind mud, that red light is probly the over heat warning.. I noticed how you take oncoming wakes staggered like that very good way to go it does toss the boat around but its safer, god I hope your motors ok brother...
@9to5less
@9to5less 4 года назад
Thanks Baylan!! I’m thinking it was overheating because we turned it back on after only a few minutes. Usually when we turn it off we don’t start it back up until the next day
@BeamerTheFox

@@9to5less it may have been hot from working it hard but that mud you had to go thru that the coast guard pushed you into is never good :/ something ive always done before you start it tho is just lift that hood an check the oil every time before you use it, we can tell if its pumping water pretty quick but the oil is a different thing lol I always say Oils cheap, Motors aint xD the red light could have been hot or low oil, the motor started sounding like rod knocking just before you guys got to the anchor spot, if it really was low on oil it may have caused severe damage, only time will tell tho.

You guys keep going, don't pay attention to people telling to stop. Get out there and keep learning. Noticed many asking about your PFD's. Look into getting the auto inflatable type either a vest or belt. That way you can have it on and not get in the way. Should you fall in they will auto inflate or you can pull the cord yourselves.

So I thought you guys were nuts when you paid for a boat that was better suited as a yard planter for a coastal trailer park. But having seen every one of your videos, I have become a big fan and am loving the fact that you guys are basically like hippies living in an 80's school bus. I mean, there are sooo many old and free boats out there, I would not be surprised if you guys started a new movement #beaterboatlife, #itstillfloats.

Remove cowling cover and check oil level. See if itbis in operating range. If not, top up with required oil initially. Next determine how many hours if use. Oil and filter hange every 100 hrs ( 12 d x 8 hrs = 96 hrs). So determine how long tou have been running the engine. May also want to check if the water cooler intake is blocked. Especially after operating in shallow muddy water. Try flushing power hose and clean water. .
