This video is about how my Interceptor 650 performed in Ladakh at altitudes of over 15,000 feet. Since this video is not about Leh ride but it's mainly focused at how this 650cc bike from Royal Enfield performed and how it was able to tackle tough terrains at challenging altitudes.
We did a full circle starting from:
Delhi - Patnitop - Kashmir - Kargil - Leh - Khardungla Pass - Nubra Valley - Pangong Lake - Changla Pass - Karu - Tanglangla Pass - Pang - Keylong - Manali - Chandigarh - Delhi (3,140 kms)

Way back in 1977 I went to the same place with bullet 350 cc, older version. When I observed that engine was stalling with creaking sound of rocker tappet assembly, I just pushed back air filter thus allowing carb to intake air directly. All along I was riding with second gear and sometimes in third gear, with road condition much worse than what you encountered. The neutral finder cam was adjusted in such a manner that once kicked on it it engaged second gear instead of neutral. That helped me saving valuable time and energy while riding uphill. I am 71 now and still dream of handling this 650 cc bike. I had earlier some riding experience with BSA A650 which was also good. Thanks for the video.

Hello Sir... Thankyou for sharing such an amazing experience. You did Leh ride when it was not "cool" to do it and hardly anyone would've even heard of this place.... can't imagine what the road or the lack of it were like back then.... Amazing 👍

@@TheTwinPost Actually it was an insane idea to ride to that place. But tell you another story. Before me a guy from Faridabad came to Manali from Leh riding a Rajdoot 175 cc motorbike. His adventure which was sponsored by no one got attention from Govt. of India. Govt. then mulled an alternate route to Leh through Rohtang Pass. This news gave me strength that if a Rajdoot could make this I too could make too!

Great. In my five rides so far in the Himalayas, I have found the Bullet 350 most dependable, though underpowered a 500cc plus bike would be better suited. Problem that most riders don't realize is that the bikes are set to ride in city, at high altitudes due to lack of oxygen they tend to stall. Had a honda varadero for company once, finally had to puncture the air filter with a screw driver. Before riding in the hills make the engine a bit faster with rich fuel mix. I hope this helps.

Bullet 350 standard or classic? Which is better for hills bro? Can i go to ladakh in standard 350 as i only has kick start not self start?
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 3 года назад
Hi Satinder.... Standard runs on 19 inch wheels which can handle bad roads comparatively well. All new 350s from RE are now fuel injected so high altitudes won't cause that much of an issue.... 350 would feel underpowered at those altitudes.
@DeputyMcNuggets
@DeputyMcNuggets 3 года назад
@@homeat103 Standard 350 has two variants- one kick only, the other one being with ES. The thing is, standard 350 would be better because of the seat design, trusted dependability and ride height.

I did Spiti in Jun'19 on my Interceptor 650. Reached a maximum height of 14700 ft and faced 0 issues. Not discounting the usual power loss, there was nothing unusual. You are right, I had already seen Bulu bhais Vlog and was skeptical, but to be honest I was mighty impressed by the way it pulled. Royal Enfield with the ECU update has fixed this for me.

Hi Ekam...RE service centers provide ECU updates whenever there's a new one that's realeased. Under your seat they stick stickers with the version number they've updated. Initially back in 2019 I read that RE cake out with the ECU fix for the high altitude issue which the bike had...so I enquired about and as soon as the update was available they called me up to get it updated. But after that they updated the software again during one of the service....since a new update was available.

Hi there.. sorry for not providing English captions along with the video. My Saddlebags: Rynox Nomad 2 The reason I chose these was because of their design which suited the upswept exhausts design of the Interceptor. Also these don't cost a bomb and are pretty well made. I faced zero problems with them during my Ladakh ride. The only thing that was always in the back of my mind was 'Tube Tyres' and the pain that I'll have to go through in case of a puncture. Thankfully I did not face any pincture during my entire 3,100 kms Ladakh ride. (I did face a puncture during a 300 kms ride to Himachal earlier this year and boy it was a struggle to get it fixed). Stock Seat: Not made for long distance and should be changed/customised in case you're planning to ride far. I did my Ladakh ride with the stock seat and ended up with a sore butt for over a week after the ride. Short Summary of how the Bike performed in Ladakh (Especially at altitudes of 15,000ft+) : It did a brilliant job and I had a blast on it... couldn't have been happier with the way it performed. Thank you for the support 😊

Happy for you! Good to hear that the Interceptor took the mountains with no strain. And how did the suspension in particular perform? Did you have to tweak the rear for preload adjustment? Did you wish the motorcycle had more suspension travel? Did the Interceptor bottom out anywhere? And how did the tires perform? And the seat..how did it feel?
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hello Sanjeev.. thankyou for the support. Suspension: I personally never felt the need for the suspension to have more travel although if you're loading up the bike with alot of luggage (30-40kgs) then it is a good idea to set it up one step higher than the stock settings coz it's the water crossings where you'll need it. I'm so glad I had the bash plate installed as it took the hit 2-3 times when we were crossing some really bad section of water crossings. The bash plate only scraped in places where the stones were too damn big - I mean I don't think any street bike can take that without scraping. Tyres: The tyres actually performed really well but they do tend to slide a bit in the slush and sheer weight of the bike saves the rider as it tends to find traction and you're able to control the bike (depends on experience of the rider) - I had zero punctures in my Leh ride but I would really suggest a tubeless conversion becuase I did encounter puncture once during my 400kms Delhi - Himachal ride and boy it's a pain to push this bike plus getting it's rear tyre installed back again is really difficult and most puncture wala aren't ready to do it. Stock seat: Well honestly the stock seat is basically useless for long hauls. It is so narrow and super soft that I could feel the grill of the seat on my butt and I was in a lot of pain by the 4th day into the Leh ride. I'm so glad I got the seat customised but only after I came back from my Leh ride. One more thing though...do get the visor installed as well becuase this bike easily does 110-120 all day long on the highway and wind-blast at those speeds for hours can take a toll on your body. I have made a video on it so you can check that out if you're interested. Keep riding ...cheers 👍

What i think after watching many bike videos is that iridium spark plugs and a good air filter can help the bike , maybe the NS200 which climbed the peak had a cleaner filter.

For issues like high altitude in ns200, last resort is to remove the Air filter and reduce the carrying load capacity of bike, like removing luggage, crash guards etc.
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi there - NS200 was really struggling and at Chagla Pass it completely gave up and had to be towed away in a pickup truck. We did find a proper solution for it - the guys at the Leh Bajaj Service center the altered the opening of air intake and suddenly the bike started performing like a charm. Only thing is it will ride we'll only till 80 (that's all you need in Leh btw) and we got that alteration removed at Manali service center while coming back to counter the highways and did 95-105 constantly.

Attar - R u serious? Ye hi sab karna hai to bike leni hi q, dhakka marne k liye kya? Bikes with Carburettor can be fixed much more easily than the one's with FI. If the NS, which was gave up on climbing higher altitude, had a carburetor, all it needed was a little bit of adjustment and nothing else.... Never Never ever advice anyone on removing the air filter as that MAY lead to a fucked up Block/cylinder going further....
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi Niraj ...we never removed the air filter of that bike. We just took it to the Leh Bajaj Service center and people there were well aware of this issue. They just altered the air intake a little and the bike was able to perform really well afterwards. Only thing is that once you reach normal altitude you need to get the alteration back to stock settings that's it.

@@TheTwinPost The simple Logic is, just as we have issues breathing at such altitudes, same goes with our bikes... We and our bikes are adjusted at the altitude and the location that we live in.....A litter bit of adjustment to both i.e. Rider and the bike, everything goes smooth and the journey ends well.. We before leaving for the Leh ride were advised by our mechanic, that under no circumstances, should you or any mechanic should fidget with the bikes carburettor unless the bike is misfiring, overflowing etc. Other advice was never to remove the air filter...
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Agreed.... Even we were against the idea of completely taking the air filter off as suggested by many passerby. Becuase of this issue we were stuck at Changla Pass in the night at minus degree temperatures and we did not want to risk it again afterwards at Tanglangla... Hence we got that setting done and it worked in our case.

@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
If Highways is what you want to majorly enjoy then please leave out the GT for 2 reasons majorly 1. Leaned forward riding stance which is not meant for long distance riding. 2. Smaller fule tank which basically means more fuel stops Himalayan is a good option if you plan to hit offroads as well...but then you have to compromise on power and refinement. Interceptor in stock condition isn't suitable for long distance riding - You'll have to get the seat customised and get a visor installed. But it provides superior highway riding with enough grunt to do 100-110 all day long with alot of power left for overtaking. And....it's super smooth. It won't do offroads the way Himalayan would though.

@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi Vishvesh.....You'll have to get the seat customised according to your comfort preference. Plus if your wife is taller than 5'4 she would find the footpegs position too close to the seat causing her to bend her knees alot. If you can afford to get a pillion footpegs extender kit (Hepko Becker) then it will be alot more comfortable for her as a pillion. Do not take her along on such a long distance with the stock seat and stock footpegs position. My wife is 5'9 and the stock setup was really uncomfortable for her... I got the seat replaced which made it alot better for her...I will get the footpegs extender kit too...no long distance rides with her without these mods.

Good Stuff. SUBSCRIBED. I hate bad quality content, and too much noise with zero substance. Enjoyed. I am actually confused between "Interceptor650" and "Dominar400" and already planning mods even before buying. What would you say irrespective of being an owner of i650 and being an owner? I am neither a fan of RE nor Bajaj. Both aren't reliable at all. But both have come up with something unique value proposition in the market, i650 & D400, For the price you get a lot of bike, but to satisfy my uncompromising soul, i can't have it the way they are on offer.They both are just incomplete in my view. What's your take from my perspective :) Do write back. Thanks (PS: I am little more leaned towards D400 than i650!)
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi Prashant... thank-you for the support and i would work on bringing similar content in the future as well. Now let's talk about the i650 & D400 at a glance. Even though I'm a Interceptor rider I'm not a fanboy of RE - never have been nor will be. The first time I genuinely thought that I would put my hard earned money on a RE was after I test rode the Interceptor for about half an hour. (Citywalk Showroom, New Delhi). Now I've ridden all RE bikes 350s, 500s and even the Himalayan and somehow none of them excited me to invest in any of them. Interceptor : it's engine is unlike anything we've ever come across from RE. It's really smooth, decent handler for its weight, good power low down the rev range and a 6 speed gearbox. Stock headlight is just ok & the seat is just useless - touring without getting it customised was a big mistake that I made. The bike feels well built (No rusting issues yet after 9k plus kms) unlike other REs. Dominar: Honestly this bike is more apt for touring than Interceptor and you don't need to do much to make it long distance ready. Seating posture on Dominar is more suitable for touring than the i650 and it's stock headlight is unparalleled by anything in the market. What I dislike about Dominar are the brakes - they don't provide confidence at all and maybe better brake pads can solve that issue to some extent...engine wise it's a capable bike which easily sits at 100-120 kmph on the highway all day long just like the i650...not as smoothly though obviously. Both aren't perfect but yes for the money both offer alot of bike. I used to ride a 2016 RC390 and did long distance rides on it as well before my neck and wrists told me that "enough was enough now go get something comfortable". I personally chose the Interceptor just for its engine, braking (Bybre brakes but Brembo brake pads) and handling (for its weight it handles pretty well). Practically speaking: My mind says get the Dominar - spend about 10-15k on practical mods (Visor, handlebar riser, saddle stay, engine guard, better brake pads, bash plate etc) and just start riding. But my heart took me towards Interceptor and honestly I don't regret my decision. But you can't go wrong with either. Now I hope I wasn't biased - I like both the bikes and wouldn't be unhappy to munch miles on either of them.

@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 3 года назад
Hi Arjun...these tyres performed really well and I did not face any discomfort with them. They obviously aren't off-road focussed but Ladakh trip has about 90% of tarmac and only about 10% bad/off-roads and these Pirellis can handle them without any issues. Though please consider either a tubeless conversion or Formula-X for your tyres because a puncture there would put you in a really bad situation.

Glad your bike performed well. I have a question hope you will tell me. What do we mean by ECU update?
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi Sachchidanand...all fuel injected motorcycles do not have a carburettor and instead have an fuel-iniection system which is controlled by an ECU (Engine control unit) which is basically a small computer which controls the air-fuel mixture. Since it's a computer it can be manipulated through custom maps. Think of your smart phone which can be improved with updated android/iOS versions. Similarly the high altitude issue which the first lot of Interceptors had was fixed with a software update which RE came up with.

@@TheTwinPost Thanks alot. How much are you satisfied with the interceptor? Actually i am planning to buy classic but since today i am confused between the interceptor and classic. I know there is no comparison. One is 350cc and another one is 650cc and plenty of other differences too. Actually i find classic more appealing then interceptor, especially the split seatng. I wanted to go for a classic 500cc but unfortunately because of this covid it got delayed and then the co. itself closed the manufacturing of 500cc models. So whats your opinion over the 2 choices?
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Like you said... completely different machines and a considerable price difference too. Looks are totally subjective and it's something which is each to his own. Factually speaking there's just one thing where I would rate Classic to be better than Interceptor and that would be comfort....other than that there isn't anything that is better on the classic. Handling, braking, build quality, performance, tyres - in all these aspects the 650 twins are in a different league altogether.

@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
With the stock seat....pillion comfort is extremely bad.... especially if the pillion's height is anything more than 5'5-5'6. The distance between the rear footpegs and seat is too less and stock seat being squishy makes that distance lesser. My partner is 5'9 so this issue was alot more with the stock seat. I have got the seat customised now (I've posted a video of it) and pillion comfort has improved many folds. Firmer cushion + increased seat height and a back rest has resulted in much better pillion experience.

@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 3 года назад
Hi Naveen.... There's no need to carry a tent or a sleeping bag along with you for a Ladakh ride until and unless you willingly want to camp outside which is not a great idea to be honest. The weather conditions get really extreme and altitude doesn't make things easier. Plan you riding time and distance per day and the stops that you'll taking - there are plenty of hotels/guest houses wherever you want to take a halt.

Hi Umair.... You're right... We saw many people (especially RE-Himalayan riders) there who were stuck with punctures for hours. Luckily my bike did not suffer with a single puncture but yes I totally agree one should have tubeless tyres in such situations.

Hi Amit... Ya to alloys lagvalo ya fir tubeless conversion kit lagvalo kyuki tube tyres ke saath agar puncture hua waha to bohot bure fas jaoge.

interceptor ke Alloys available hain market mein , with that you can make your RE Interceptor 650 with Tubless Tyres
@TheTwinPost
@TheTwinPost 4 года назад
Hi Shivanshu ....mene kuch videos me Interceptor ke aftermarket alloys dekhe... Aftermarket alloys par me zada vishwas nahi karta hu or RE ke official alloys jab aenge tab unhe lagvane ke baare me zarur sochunga. Tabtak me tubeless conversion kit ko tryout karunga
