Today I'm celebrating as this is video #200 for The DCC Guy channel and we just passed 18,000 subscribers! So let's celebrate with a video on the new interchange connection for my Piedmont Southern layout. First I want to share with you a little bit of the history of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway and its connection to the Southern Railway at Tye River. We'll look at the track plan and see how the interchange at Tye River will be operated. Then we'll start the buildout by installing a curved backdrop on the layout. So let's get started!

Larry, CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 ON THE 18,000+ SUBS. Though you may wish to update your Subscribe Promo clip from 2K. Also a change you could have made was to install a lower deck to ceiling hard board wall covering. Then you would have your entire backdrop surfacing in place, and not have to piece meal two backdrops. Also you could have used your temporary chipboard clamps below and above the hard board surface. Eliminateing the need for plastering repairs. Still and all I'm anticipating the development. ~Jim

Hi Larry, congratulations, both with your RU-vid milestone and your very promising layout extension. Certainly the research you showed add to the level of interest of the whole Piedmont Southern. Am already looking forward to your next video reports on the progress.

Congratulations on your 200th video! Three days ago I got my first DCC starter set, a Zepher Express, even though my layout is a very small switching layout for one loco. My Walthers Plymouth now runs smoothly at very slow crawling speeds. I also did my first DCC conversion, putting a Tsunami2 TSU-1100 and speaker into an old Proto 2000 SW9/1200. Whew! I had to remove the cab interior for the speaker and the extra weight for the decoder, but the results were worth it. I can now have very authentic sounds when I'm in the mood. I'm sure that your library of videos will be a great resource for me. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Hope you have a happy and relaxing Fourth of July Larry. It is really great to see more of the Piedmont Southern. I was very impressed with your Method of bending the Hardboard around such a sharp Curve, I ‘d seen it on the Module but this was another level of Magnitude, I bet your Heart was in your Mouth when you started to bend the Backdrop…….Thanks and Keep safe.

After the recent job on the modules I was actually pretty confident this would work. I need to now haul it out to the driveway and cut off the excess so I can get it in permanently.

Hi Larry you have the advantage over most of us in the UK as you have a basement with seemingly unlimited space, the best we get is an attic with hot and cold temperature variations.

Check out his other video. Larry tells you to use Ammonia D Windex or else it comes apart.
@stewarttrains98

What makes the windex significant in soaking the board to bend instead of water or something else? This is something that I will have to remember when I start building my next layout.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
As I explained in the other video it has to be the original Windex with Ammonia-D not the one with Vinegar, etc. I assume that the ammonia gets into the wood fibers and softens them so they will bend easily. All I know for sure is it works. After it dried overnight I took out the screws and it was set in that 90 degree curve and could stand alone. Take a look at the video I mentioned and provided a link to for a couple more examples.

Hi Larry: Never thought that Hard board could be curved so sharp. I have a similar outside corner to do. Seeing how you made the bend has giving me some idea as to what will be needed to accomplish the bend. If this works I will try it on the 180 D bend at the end of the peninsula. If you have any other suggestions please let me know. thanks so much for your very informative vidilos.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
For a 180 I would do a test bend with some scraps, that will be pretty tight but may work. You’ll need to saturate a wide area and go slow. Having some extra hands would help too. I have never seen this done with more than 90 degrees. Another option is to buy a large sheet of styrene. I have a 4’ x8’ x0.040” styrene sheet I got at a plastics supplier for a project like this and did all my backdrops on a prior layout with it.

@@TheDCCGuy Update to the 180 bend. The bend is in, I used a method I found on one other rail road sites on Trains.com. I used a cardboard tub used to poor round concrete columns. I used a 12"d form, attached it in place, saturated the hard board as recommended and proceed with the bend. It worked like a charm. I have a picture but don't know haw to insert it here.

What is the best track to use for HO kato or atlas
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
I use Micro Engineering or Peco flextrack myself as they are the most realistic looking and I use Micro Engineering or Walthers turnouts. I am not a fan of the track with plastic roadbed and preset curves (set track). I prefer not to be constrained to specific radii.

Sound continues to be murky. Consider a better microphone.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
I use a Rode wireless mic and it sounds fine to me. I listened to it on a iMac, Dell PC, iPad, and TV. Have you had your hearing checked lately, murky hearing can be a sign of high blood pressure and some other conditions, don’t ignore your health.
