I tried taking calculus. The room was packed. At least 60 people. I was lost in the first sentence he said. It was my fault of course. I really had not prepared for it. I had not done well in any of my math classes because I didn't motivate myself at all. I took terrible notes, thinking I could remember what he said! Watching and doing as many videos as possible of yours that I can and working at home with course books has helped me tremendously.

Yes, a five year old can learn the symbols and operations of numbers,. but that's a long way from application and knowing what the hell it means.

In the beginning, why did you have 3X^3 - 2x^2 +4 and then write 3^3x -2x^2 + 5. Confusion at the beginning, why?

@@ajmiller7102 He made a mistake. He never intended 3^3*x to be part of any of his given functions. The graph is in the shape of a cubic, and that is only possible with an x^3 term. Had it been 3^3*x - 2*x^2 + 5, that function should be a parabola, and not a cubic, because it is really -2*x^2 + 9*x + 5.

Integral calculus : calculating the area 'under the curve.' The way this is done is by summing up a bunch of rectangles between the 0-Y axis and the formula... i.e. rectangle height = formula at a specific x location; width is a tiny delta-x named "dx." Do you see the formula of this problem has three items all times the dx? ==> integral(3x^3-2x^2+5)dx sorry I don't have the integral symbol S so I spelled it out as "integral." I can't, yet, prove why, but each term's x gets increased by 1... 3x^3 ==> 3x^4 2x^2 ==> 2x^3 5 ==> 5x but there's more: when x^3 goes to x^4 the value needs to be divided by 4 when x^2 goes to x^3 the value needs to be divided by 3 when 5 goes to 5x the value needs to be divided by 1 3x^3 ==> (3x^4)/4 2x^2 ==> (2x^3)/3 5 ==> (5x)/1 such that: integral(3x^3-2x^2+5)dx = (3/4)x^4-(2/3)x^3+5x + C ??? C ??? it's called the constant of integration. When determining the tiny rectangle at x=0 there IS a value other than 0... it is the C value. so this process develops a new equation that yields the area under the curve. to find a SPECIFIC area say from x=2 to x=4 these numbers are plugged into the new equation, one at a time, yielding results. The result from least x (x=2) is subtracted from result of larger x (x=4)... AND since there's that "C" constant it disappears as it is SAME for x=2 and x=4 and since the results are subtracted from each other C disappears.. YOU CAN DO IT!

Keep at it! you might want to revisit earlier math stuff like algebra, or solving and graphing polynomials. To be completely honest, I know tomtke is trying to help but I feel like his explanation is a bit too confusing/kinda an overload of info for someone who is a complete beginner with calculus. I guess keep trying to watch videos that provide simplified explanations and get your basics strengthened, and eventually your brain will start connecting the pieces

3*3*3 = 27 3^3 means three to the third power. Another way of thinking of powers, or exponents, is how many copies of the base are multiplied by themselves. In this case, 3 is the base (the big number, the number being raised) and three is the power (the little number, the number of copies). So you have 3*3*3 - that's three copies of three times itself. Which is 27.
