What I always took from this song was basically live the golden rule in case God could be anyone. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated

In the past five years I have requested this song from many reactors and several have done it and was surprised by it, but nobody has come close to the comprehensive intellectual understanding analysis of the issues addressed in this thought provoking song better than you just did.

Saw Joan Osborne twice with The Other Ones, ex-members of the Grateful Dead, back in 2003, Willie Nelson and Family were playing at the same show. Pretty cool. I actually know the Bass Player from The Hooters, Joan's backing band here. His name is Andy King, and he is just a good dude, no Rock Star airs. Used to play Disc Golf with him on a weekly basis for a couple of years, and I never knew he was in The Hooters until a couple of years after that time.

Joan was also in a band with the drummer from the Black Crowes - S5eve Gorman , and a talented singer /songwriter named Jackie Green. The band was called Trigger Hippy. Saw them when they toured.

great song. I remember when this on the car radio all the time! I try and live by the saying " There but by the grace of god goes I " I see a bum on the street and think ....but for circumstance that could be me. I do have a bobble head on my car dash. Its my "anti road rage device" as I can look it at and say " well there doopy dog, we dodged another angry person" And it works! Have great day to all!!!!
@AliasMark69

Those "angry" people are out there, but not so much in my neighborhood because, there is no neighborhood, just me and the trees and all the birds and animals... my neighbors, I feed them.

This was Joan's break out hit from her major label debut album "Relish" , which was Grammy Nominated BTW . Joan has never chased celebrity as a musician , so that's why she remains relatively unknown if you don't dive deeper into the music pool . Joan still regularly tours and she has a new album out with her covering her favorite Bob Dylan songs . Some other great songs from the same album "One of Us" was on & have some Live takes sitting out here in youtube land that are from Late Night TV appearances around that time trying promote the album are "Right Hand Man" and "Ladder" .

"One of Us" was the lead single from Joan Osborne's debut album and a really big hit in 1995 and 96. A good follow up might be Tori Amos "God" from 1994.

I have not heard this song in a long time, but I remember it well now and I really do like it. I have never though heard that "odd" beginning of acapella singing. I am sure radio just never played that part or it is only part of the song for the video. IDK. Thank you for reacting to this song. I appreciate you bringing back songs from the past and not fixating on only the newest releases.

This is a personal favorite of mine. Thanks for the review! I remember how controversial this song actually was back when it came out. Seems tame by today's standards, and is a great message to ponder. What if God was one of us?

@@visaman I recall a quite ridiculous conversation with a friend of mine at the time who said he hated this song because (he said) it assumed the Pope was the only person in the world calling God and he was a fervent anti-Catholic who believed Catholicism was actually created by Satan to deceive mankind. Notice how I said at the time? I no longer keep company with people with such beliefs of hate and conspiracy...

Full Disclosure… Born into a typical Italian/Irish-Catholic family. Did ALL the Bible studies in classes until 12 years old. I knew it all basically. Started leaning about Universal Physics and discovered the facts about how everything came into existence around 15 years old which led me to becoming an Outspoken Atheist since 17 years old. Having a realistic proper understanding of basic physics gives you a totally independent perspectives on reality and life itself. You realize it is not physically possible for the slob next to you on the bus to be any kind of real god… just another slob on the bus, but should be treated with Human Dignity... anyhow.

Well you see, the point is, that the bummy looking guy sitting next to you on the bus could be God in disguise. How would we know it wasn't, so, it is important to treat others the way you would treat God. If we did that the World would be a better place.
