We all start somewhere! 🙈 If I could give my 20s self a bit of design advice, experiment more worry less!! I wished I took more pictures of my spaces as well to see how far I’ve come 🤗 How has your style evolved since your 20s? Do you decorate more or less?
This is me in my 40s ❤ but I’ll be 50 next year and now know so much since I’ve researched (watching Julie’s channel) for years. I know what I want going forward. I didn’t buy any new furniture for my new home in 4 years. I saved for hardwood floors instead.
FRIGGIN LOVE THAT for you Leticia! I bet every time you walk on it you’re like… 😍😍😍. That’s the beauty of saving up for what you REALLY WANT. You fall that much more in love every day 🙌🏻
My mom just showed up with a truck load of stuff 😂 but it was things like pillows, drapery, a cool chair, sink, mirror, candle, she even put my porch together for me. The woman is talented! Lol I’m blessed to have her help me with this old house we just bought. Anyway I’m still taking your tips! Don’t buy the cheap shit! 😂
Me in my 20’s buying cheap shit at retail price 🙈 BUY EXPENSIVE FOR CHEAP! TAKE cheap hand-me-downs! But please don’t SPEND your hard-earned cash for MDF/ Particleboard crap 🙅🏼♀️
I think some people (like you) are hunters, and love the thrill of the "hunt" for bargains. Also, there's a thin line between maximalism and hoarding 😀
It’s called your clutter threshold. Everyone has a different level of clutter they can handle. The way you store things is also a part of it, some like to hide it in cupboards and some like stuff easily assessable on a peg board or on the fridge. It’s a challenge but fun to get your space set up for you. Lived with a hoarder for a long time so I’m pretty sensitive to my threshold. 😊
Love Sassy Julie! You look stunning. This is great advice even if you’re in your 50s and starting over. I never got a pic of my teen room but it’s permanently in my mind. Didn’t have anything but Belle magazine in my 20s but I was also living in a mining town with the ugliest laminated wood grain furniture for the most part. Didn’t want dark wood like my parents so I got clear polish pine furniture which went orange but is now painted black. Biggest changes I’m making is not settling for the best of the bad bunch and living within my clutter threshold with beautiful storage. PS I’ve changed my name from Fiona to Harriet!
Thank you for watching and commenting Harry! 🤗 Design is never done and that’s the true beauty of it! I can remember my rooms so vividly as well, but to take y’all on my journey- I need proof! 📸😂 Need to dig those old pix up!
Thanks so much Charmaine! 💖 Looking around my home now, I ONLY kept those high quality pieces! The rest of the cheap filler furniture went to donation. I spent so much time hoarding in my 20s and a lot of my 30s trying to undo the physical (and mental) damage 🤪
I have a couple of to read books that had turned into piles in my living room floor. I’m usually very neat but just let them grow over the summer. I finally took them into my main library in the garage and took back my living room.
I liked you being honest about yourself and making mistakes and the journey around the way. I think its good you shared makes us feel better about our mistakes.
My room has been “in progress for 5 years” 😢 and I’m 27 now. But I love your advice I have already gotten rid of cheap sh*t I bought because it was not my style/ comfortable (loveseat from at home and random office chair from Ross). My family now gives me vintage brass/ chinoiserie pieces. I love these types of gifts 🎁 and I love saving for pieces I want. Thank you Julie I feel less overwhelmed about finishing my spaces 🥹
My home has been in progress for 9 years Sara. This is the first year where I finally feel like I’m making time to “design” it when the past 9 years felt like I was trying to make things work. Timing is everything. We really have to be “ready” whatever that means to you 😊
😂I do that, Julie...I put things I love in my card and I wait a few weeks : if I still love this thing, I really think about it and, only a few of them end up in my home 😊🙏!
Thank you for this video. I love interior design, always have. When I was 13 that's what I wanted to do. Everyone laughed and I listened to them. Gave up my dream because I didn't think I the talent. I am sorry now. I still dabble. 6th living room iteration. Always changing it up, reading design, following tubers. I still love it. Follow your dreams because you can always pick yourself up and do something else.
Your hair so pretty! Makes you look like your in 20’s! You look so young without redoing your hair. It seemed like it took us so long to finally, buy quality. I guess that’s what happens in your 60’s. My mom always said that buying quality, so no matter what, clothing, furniture- it lasts!
When you come up on some money, you just want to shop and play, I get it! But looking back, I don’t even remember all the crap I bought then donated, but I sure do remember all the quality pieces I kept and still cherish. Your 20s are for experimenting! That’s the fun of it 🤗
I do not regret buying the art first in my 20s… Had I invested in quality furniture early on, I would have had to leave it behind after dozens of moves (including an international one) But I still have the art I collected throughout the years!
Don’t forget outlets. High end stores have warehouse sales and outlets and tent sales. You should go to look. And please bring your measurements bf you take or buy anything. If it speaks to you you should get it. I’m not so I interested in matching wood tones. If I like the piece it’s a go. I have different styles many refinished by me and some reupholstered or re-caned. It is time for me to think about what I want to keep and I’m pretty sure what stays. If you have children and they want something you have even if you use it just give it up. By this I mean dining sets china lamps tables. I would rather have the cheap stuff and let them have the good stuff. If they ask you they need it or really like it. Just give it to them. Nice work Julie! Good advice for all ages!🥰👍🏻
Oyes you KNOW I love my outlets and consignment shops Margaret! But even those designer outlets are way out of budget sometimes 😂 Those two cabinets you see behind me retail for over 4K total. I bought both for less than 1K but that’s still a 1K splurge 😅
Me in my 70s watching this, cherishing some family pieces, some IKEA classics (Billy bookcases, obelisk, but I have too much stuff. Good planning required.
I’ll admit, I still have my Billy bookcases (cheap/MDF) BUT I bought these on Craigslist for less than half the original price 😅 We learn as we go Dyana! I still have filler pieces that I want to upgrade, taking the slow and steady route 💖
I could barely listen to you Julie - but I did 😂 - i felt in love with your console / chest in you background and my eyes constantly were drown there 😍 Can I ask what kind of wood is that?
Aw thank you Flavia 🫶🏻 Going to take the next few vids to reintroduce myself. I feel like a former/new/improved/updated Mom version of me is evolving lol Thanks for being there from the beginning!! 🥹🙏🏻💘
I’m pensioner and give half to my daughter she’s lives other side world and it’s expensive but I got a solid wood bed with headboard second hand for £20 just need someone strong to put it together for me! ♥️🇬🇧
Julie your hair looks great!!! Gee when you're in your twenties money is scares n you can't afford it no matter how cheap! I love you Julie but this video ????
Thank you Stella! The tip is don’t BUY cheap shit. But you sure can take it from others/ thrift it when necessary/ and source secondhand EVERY chance you get! Save your money for quality- Buy well, cry once! 🤗
You’ll be saying that for the next few videos I hope. An evolved me is emerging, finally feel like I’m switching from new Mommy mode to seasoned Mommy 🙌🏻😅
