Intermittent no start problems from a bad computer ground.
2000 Audi S4 Quattro 2.7 Turbo.
The procedures shown in this video apply to ALL make and model cars. When you understand circuit designs like the 5v reference and sensor ground paths, these types of problems are very easy to identify. The problem on this Audi was revealed within the main sensor circuits (MAP and TPS etc) and was quickly narrowed down to a sensor ground problem.
Symptoms:
random stalling problems
intermittent no start
clicking noises under the hood when not starting
no communication with scan tool
throttle body motor clicking rapidly
Fix:
tightened loose computer ground eyelet located on the firewall
Test procedures shown:
electronic throttle body tests
throttle position sensor signal tests with a scope

I bow to your superior knowledge. So bad ground on sensor ground you then check your computer grounds. Learnt it. also that the pressure sensors never share grounds with thermistors. This is the only real channel that the info goes in an stays. Guy's got the nack of teaching for sure. 10/10

Good video for newbies but as a tech in the real world the first thing we check is the grounds. very easy fix with that complaint.

Scanner Danner your the man excellent demonstration bro i like how you flow with you words In this video and the older ones I personally think you should stick to the flow style with how express your words that's what makes you unique the later video tends to not have the flow regardless I think you are very good and passionate with diagnostic and teaching keep up the good work.

@ChrisWilson5006 Its called a Smartboard. We just them them this past year at my school. (Rosedale Technical Institute). As for real world use, you can see how I use it in my class. It has been a tremendous enhancement to my classroom environment.

European wiring diagrams are pure madness. Had to look at one from Volvo the other day, and all of the designations were in fractions with no color coding to speak of. I guess it makes it easier to change languages.

I got a few Citroën cars that have a wrong connected to battery.This was done by the owner. In the computer the print was damaged. So I connected the body of the computer to ground and all was back OK. So, even with good ground wires it is not sure the ECU is connected to ground. If you open the ECU you can see the print of the ECU is in contact with the body of the ECU. This is a quick check to be sure the ECU got ground. A simple wire between ground and ECU body you got a good ground for the ECU.

LOL, I will work on getting some more Euro problems up here. I believe All-Data uses factory diagrams, which is great for the factory tech. Mitchel re-draws all of the diagrams in the same format which is so much better for the aftermarket tech. This way you don't need to study keys and legends before you can read the diagram. If all Mitchell-On Demand had was wiring diagrams, I would still buy it, it is that useful to me.

Anybody can be a smart mechanic with a fancy snap-on diagnostic computer witch I don't answer me this scanner danner why won't my 09 Toyota Corolla a with the 1.8 dual vvt-i motor won't start most of the time but when it does start it's if I unplug the number one fuel injector then it runs like crap but when I plug it in it runs pretty good until your coming to a stop but down the road it runs like a champ

Traced an exact symptom with my '99 Audi A4 1.8T to one of the ECM harnesses that somehow had a bit of water and corrosion on several of the pins. Cleaned up and like new. Thanks.

when you measured the voltage drop on the negative wire of the control unit, you connected to the negative side of the battery, and when the control unit supplied power to the throttle, there was a surge in voltage drawdown due to insufficient mass. your oscilloscope showed a voltage drop. Did I get it right?

Looool Paul I specialize on European cars. If I told you how many times I seen this issue. Many times the culprit is techs, DIYers, etc using the ground for testing, running auxiliary equipment, jumping, etc. Did the TB survive the voltage spikes? I have seen the TB fail after being exposed to this poor connection shortly after...

i have a similar problem on audi q7 2008, i checked the ground cables near the ECU but there is one cable missing to what it is seems to be a ground chassis bolt. there are 3 ground cables and i see a third bolt empty, on one bolt are 2 ground cables then next to it another, but on the side of the same area there is the third misisng

I have just had this on a hilux, kept knocking into limp home mode, gearbox fail etc 722 codes, 10mm bolt on back head, computer grounds are not earths you are right, sensor ground from computer is for sensors like temp oil solenoid gearbox etc

Good job, Can i car throw a Tps or actuator throttle body code? My cars going into limp mode (volvo) and dies. Minute later it runs fine. I hit the car computer gently, car died? Stuck on replacing tps, actuator, or pedal position censor... Or now grounds. ANY HELP WOULD BE A BIG ONE . FROM ANYONE!! LOVE THE VIDEO

I have a 2002 audi s4 quattro that i took to the smog station to get a smog. But according to the technician , my computer won't communicate the scanner or smog machine. Maybe you could share fix or how to troubleshoot this problem. Thank you

i got a problem whith 02 volvo v70 5 cilinders. cranks turns got spark fuel pulsein the injector timing its good and got stored cts a 190 degres and speed sensor at 99 miles so my question is what can be ...y check ground and cleaned.

I trust this man, Paul Danner. Each and everytime i watch his clips i have a smile on my face. i dont think that fixing automotive can be difficult if you watch his clips with an intention of getting educated.

Paul - question on Snap-on scopes seeing that you're using a Verus. Have a chance to buy a Modis (next model down) for $1,500. Would that be a good deal as well as offering the versatility needed for most work? Your comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

The way you make it look soo easy is wonderful.....Thank you ..i had reached out to you some time ago..... 2004 Audi A8 4.2L Audi Dealership treated me horrific , I replaced and cleaned almost everything in the engine compartment..after i got it all back together ,mil p0207 open circuit #7 and im getting the camshaft position sensor, getting spark, getting pulse, i think what's happening is camshaft three wire supply must have a short.. keep trying to back check the wire...to the ecm can't find the schematic wire chart... need your advice... stay well

I have a question... Not related to this video though... I'm wondering why gm cars around the 2000 year for example 2000 express van 3500 5.7 L motor and 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo with the series 2 3800.. When looking at the scan data, key on engine NOT running does the maf sensor show 2.45 grams per second? Then once started the maf reads correctly? But then my 2004 grandprix with the series 3 3800 doesn't do that.... The scan data for the maf on my Grand Prix shows 0 g/sec key on engine NOT running.. I know that's clearly correct for my gp but why do the other 2 vehicles not show 0 g/sec with the engine off....

That's not uncommon to see data PIDs react that way. It is not a concern. Other examples: An O2 data PID reading 4mv with the signal wire jumped to ground instead of 0mv. ABS Wheel speed sensors reading 3 mph with the car sitting still.

I've learned that, lol... I was just wondering why, only thing I can think of is to keep the repair money in house... Throw off the non-dealer mechanics and they replace things that aren't the problem and then the manufacturer hopes the vehicle will end up in the hands of their mechanics whom they told the secrets too... Lol.. Eventually people figure it out and it's no longer a secret but they keep doing weird stuff like that I've learned... I was just hoping, wondering if their was a actual technical reason for it and figured your the best guy to ask....

check all fuses and check for a 5v reference at the TPS or IAT sensor (unplugged). I have videos on the 5v reference circuit and how to use it in cases like this.

Not bad, but it seems like you lost focus on the car towards the end as you referred to it as a A4 at the end, i dont recall any 2.7 liter Twin Turbo Audi A4's in the 2000's or there abouts, you had it right at the beginning, S4, a friend has a similar one and its a great car, this was a odd issue, your student probably isn't the original owner as this car was nearly $54k with just a handful of options when it was new in 2000 and i don't know to many students that can afford that....unless mommy or daddy are flipping the bill, anyway, good video.
