This video will show you step-by-step how to internally adjust the travel of a 2016+ Fox Float fork. This procedure applies to both the 32mm and 34mm stanchion forks.
hi! I have a fox rhytm 34 at 140mm travel I see they sell the grip damper unit as 90-120mm travel and 130-150mm travel. So I'm assuming I have the 130-150mm travel damper. So if my damper is 130-150mm can I put a 120mm air spring shaft in or is the 130mm air shaft the lowest I can go? Do the shafts have to match? I know with rockshox you can play around with travel a bit more because they don't have a damper cartridge like fox does but instead an "open" system
Clint is a fucking legend! I wouldn't have a bloody clue about any of this stuff! Two years ago he pointed me in the right direction with a basic Giant Talon, I now have a Trance with 34's and he still blows my mind! I couldn't do what he's doing here, I'd end up smashing up my garage and getting divorced...
Excellent tutorial..Although I'm installing 160mm from 150..Now to complete your fox fork maintenance we need to reseal the damper..Don't be a girlieman(Arnold S.) And maintenance tear down will be complete..P.S will fit4 damper work on grip damper fork..Ill be waitin for vidTim McDroid
Donde puedo comprar ese pistón para mi horquilla? Lo he buscado de todas las maneras posibles en Internet y no encuentro que vendan las piezas sueltas en ningún sitio.
I have a bike with 140mm front and rear travel, can I lower the fork to say 120mm or 130mm? How will that affect the rear shock? any problem with running less travel up front and more in the back?
Typically you need a bit more suspension travel in the front than the back, or at least the same. Personally I think the bike is going to feel a bit unbalanced and maybe a bit twitchy and that's set up. it's not complicated to do so I guess you could try it. The worst case scenario is you put it back.
Hi Clint My FOX Factory 34 model 2016, is being replaced with a model 2017 on warranty. Do you know if the airshaft 150mm I purchased seperately fits in the new 2017 model as well?
Hi Clint, curious that you use 20wt oil on top of the spring, Fox recommends float fluid (well they do for my older 34). To me both liquids feel like the have the same viscosity so I might do this too.
HELP HELP. HELP. Hi Clint. Great video. Where can I purchase the assembly. I want to change the travel of my 2016 Fox 32 Fit4 from 120mm to 100mm. Please share the info where can I buy it. I will wait for your reply. Thank you.
+Elmer R Cajilog you have to order it through a bike shop. Most shops have an account with fox. If you don't have a local shop close to you you can probably order it through a company like Competitive Cyclist online.
Hi Clint! I was just told and confirmed from two authorized FOX service centres in EU, foxracingshox.de(Germany) and foxservice.nu(Denmark) NOT to use grease on the air shaft assembly. The grease clogs up the air transfer ports, making the two air champers as one big air champer. Just use the Gold 20WT oil. Could you also get confirmation from your contact at FOX in Cali? www.ridefox.com/help.php?m=bike&id=615 step 9. "Apply a thick film of Slick Honey to the new air shaft assembly" - Do not apply grease, just 20WT GOLD oil. Needs to be corrected I think.
Are you liking the geometry on the frame better after the increased travel? Really considering doing this to an anthem 2 as opposed to buying an sx. I wouldn't need the dropper and lsc adjuster on my trails. A dropper doesn't help bunny hopping pigeons in nyc. What was the cost of the air spring upgrade if you don't mind me asking. It looks like you moved all your old parts and upgraded suspension to the Factory series. The anthem 2 is available with a lot of LBS as opposed to the the sx which is at the "pro shops". I imagine come May, as long as stock is still present, cash in hand will help me somewhat with my purchase. I don't mind pricing shops around because my LBS stopped carrying Giant and moved to pivot. I'm also perfectly able to wrench on my bike. Pivot's line up looks like overkill for our trails. I've seen some 2015 sx advanced in ok condition up for sale for the price of the 2016 anthem 2, but considering carbon failures I'm definitely put off by the idea of a used carbon anthem frame off the interwebs with no warranty.
For my trails I settled back to 100 and I'm liking the agility. Check out my video that I did regarding putting the 120 fork on the anthem. It should answer most of your questions. I mention in the video that the air spring assembly cost $35. Remember you can go from 120 to 100 but you can't go from 100 to 120, according to Fox.
Hi Clint and thanx for all your great videos..i wanted to ask you about the air pressure you use on your stepcast. What is your weight and how much air are u using? How does it compare with the fox air chart? Im 80 kgs and run 75 psi but just doesn't feel right..i tried 60psi and on open mode fully breaking again doesnt feel right. Could it be with the oil volume, or something? Thank you!
thank you so much for this video! i want to upgrade my fork to a tapered fork on a non tapered frame so i have to use the hope ec 44 external bearing cups which add 1 cm of height to my bike...i will travel down the fork from 120 to 110 mm so that my bike geometry will stay the same :)
Excellent video, as always! I've an issue with exactly same fork you are working on. It is almost new, little more than a month of smooth use. The issue is that the rebound adjustment knob suddenly become EXTREMELY hard to turn, to any side; actually the only way to move it is by using clamps! The only thing that has ever been done to the fork, is that I removed the 3-position lockout blue lever by taking off the center silver 2.5mm hex screw, to clean under blue lever due a rainy and very muddy I got. I did not touch any other piece at all, not even tried to remove the retaining ring nor the plate at the base. Hopefully you will have some idea of what could have gone wrong and how to get the knob back to smooth turning . The rebound knob was working even after the muddy ride, and until just before I cleaned the blue lever.Thank you in advance!
+Erik Castañeda I have not taking apart the damper side on this fork so at this point I'm not sure how you could remedy that issue. You may need to send it back to Fox as a warranty issue. Sorry I couldn't help!
You used to be able to do that on the older Fox Forks. The crowns changed at one point to where you could no longer pull the assembly out of the top. so it depends on the year.
Clint, you rock! Any time I'm doing something to my bike the first time, I always come to you.. Your steps are so clear and easy to follow, thank you so much for doing these!!!
hi clint i just fitted a 2016 contact sl dropper post on my bike works perfect but does have 1 to2 mm play side to side on the seat it doesnt notice wen i ride . is this normal is it the same on your new trance?
Quick question. My 2016 Fox 32 performance series is 120mm. On a Trek Fuel EX. I know there is a shaft available to make it 130mm. I'm thinking I'd like the extra plush after dialing it in. Lots of roots and small bumps where I ride. I am 155 lbs..160 all kitted. Can you see this as making it too flexy or should it be ok for semi aggressive riding with only small drops and not a lot of air. I ride hard sometimes but I'm 54 I dont get crazy. I value your input.. your videos are very informative and well detailed.. Thank you, great stuff. So what do you think?
I don't think you're going to make it too flexy with an extra 10 mm. I think the benefits far outweigh any additional flex. Just keep in mind the bike will steer a little bit more slowly on tight stuff but will be more stable on faster descents.
@@ClintGibbs OK great thank you.. I think I'll look into getting the air shaft. I'm not bottoming it but I'd like to dial it in a tad softer so the extra 10mm might be the difference I want. Have a great weekend.
Well done! Nice guide. 17:57 oil volume chart, not air* Bdw, I've seen warnings on some suspension oil cans that it has been "tested positive for cancer on animals" so it's a good idea to use gloves when working with suspension oil.
Clint Gibbs im not gonna do it by myself but I don’t want the mechanic ask me money as for a two hour labour! Lot of pirates out there Thanks and great, great channel, one of the best 👍
+Live Aeons yes, the same procedure should work for a fox 34, however you usually cannot go from lower travel to more travel. But I would check with your local bike shop and have them call Fox about that. Of course, if it were a 150 you can go down to a 140. But I don't think the other way works, at least it doesn't for the 32 Fork.
If you adjust the air stack then do you need to adjust the other side too? I ordered it like new from pinkbike.com and I'm unsure if other side have travel stack or not already. But I did removed one orange and one blue on the air side for 160mm travel. Make sense?
+Geoffrey Marr the other side is the damper side and is completely independent at the spring side. The spring side controls the amount of pressure required to compress the shock. The damper side controls how fast the shock goes up and down. So no, you don't need to do anything on the damper side.
Hi Clint, great video! How would you advice to dislodge / remove the dampers without the Damper Removal tools from Fox you show right in the beginning? Thanks!
+Merijn Sakko you would have to thread the black nut on backwards and then tap it with a hammer. Just be very careful and there's always a chance you will damage that. They are cheap but means you have to get one of them at the bike shop. I used to keep an old one that I would use each time I did the service.
Clint Gibbs I’m sorry ... I saw Tarantino last movie and I felt in love with Brad Pitt character who is named Cliff so my mind play some tricks on me. Thanks again for the support mate, very kind
did you buy your air shaft assembly kit directly from fox?i live in the philippines and they do not sell the air shaft here, im wondering where i could order one?
+Matt Marshman I'm not sure. I know with the 100 millimeter fork you cannot extend it to 120. You can only go down and travel. But there's a chance Fox uses the same fork for 140 and 150. In other words the 140 it's just the 150 with the travel spaced down. I would have your local bike shop check with Fox, or you can call Fox directly. Their number is on their website.
@@ClintGibbs But there is a Fox 34 fit 4 damping cartridge 130-160mm travel. Manufacturer Part Number: 820-08-758-KIT Can you have a quick look on this. Can this be installed on my fork. I appreciate and ride safe sir.
@@christophercaparas7329 I would just call Fox and ask them. Since I've never done it I don't want to give you advice that could not be accurate. At first I assumed you had the step cast fork but it seems you don't? The step cast I think would be limited to 120 but if it's a regular you could probably increase the travel to 140.
Hey Clint! I'm about to internally change the travel of my 2016 FOX Factory 34 from 140mm to 160mm. Did you have any difficulties removing the retaining ring and putting it back in? Something I shoud be aware of. I bought the 820-02-366-KIT for my fork, but there was no extra retaining ring included, so I only have one shot, not braking it. www.ridefox.com/help.php?m=bike&id=615 See step 7 and 11. Looking forward hearing from you. Thanks! :-)
+Gerard Posch I don't recall having any difficulties with that. You will need the tool to remove a retaining ring. If you have that you should be golden.
+Gerard Posch actually, come to think of it I don't think you even need a tool other than a flat blade screwdriver. But as I stated. It's not really that difficult.
hey! where did you buy the 820-02-366-KIT from and how much was it? intending to do the same adjustment on my 2016 34 float fit4 performance from 140 to 160
I bought it from here: foxracingshox.de/FOX-FACTORY-ERSATZTEILE/ERSATZTEILE-FUeR-FEDERGABELN/FEDERGABEL-AIR-SHAFT-ASSY/2016-Service-Set--Air-Shaft-Assy--34--160mm--FLOAT-NA-2--1-214--Bore.html
The weight really didn't change when I put it to 100. According to Fox the float 120 is about 8 to 10 grams heavier than the 100, so not much of a difference in the new ones.
+Clint Gibbs FYI www.jensonusa.com/Fox-32-Float-100-Factory-29-2016?cs=Black www.jensonusa.com/Fox-32-Float-120-Factory-275-2016?cs=Black . There is a 190g / .42lb difference from a 29er to a 27.5, so probably slightly more for a 29er. (the 29er does not have a weight posted)
+Clint Gibbs This website has it at 134g / .30 lbs www.artscyclery.com/Fox_32_Float_29_100_Fit4_Factory_Fork_44mm/descpage-FS1632FF910.html www.artscyclery.com/Fox_32_Float_29_120_Fit4_Factory_Fork_51mm/descpage-FS1632FF912.html
I, like you, started researching fork weights before purchasing my fork. The weights listed for online vendors was all over the board. That's why I called Fox directly and talked with the technician who told me there is an 8 to 10 gram difference between 100 and 120 in the 27.5. Not sure if the 29 is going to be any different.
+Clint Gibbs I just got off the phone with Fox. The 100mm is 3.57lbs and the 120mm is 3.90lbs in 29 and I assume the 27.5 is the same. They also told me the weight of the 120 does not change when the travel is reduced.
