I used to love driving the 1086 on my uncle's farm. I can still remember those sounds. The "pshwshhh" of the brakes the moan of the transmission, the banging of the gears and not wanting to shift easy. I had to come to a stop and pull it into reverse then go from reverse over into high if coming out of park. It seemed to keep the high end from grinding. 1-4 always was a booger too while rolling but was a great tractor. Thanks for the upload. Brings back memories of when I was a kid.
Excellent engines, the torque and power of these models down to the little 784 models was amazing .Cab comfort was exceptional beautiful transmission altho some say the T.A was dodgey yet in all our years of farming and another family , friends of ours never had a problem with it, if operated correctly it was fine. It is still even today a tragedy that they are not on the market. Oh and for service and support , there was simply none better.
This video brought back great memories, particularly because it puts me back into the seat of a 1086 for the first time in 25 years, since all our land went into CRP. I applaud how careful you are... multiple checks of the trailing equipment as you go along the public road, checking for traffic coming up behind you, multiple checks at the crossroad. Nearly stalling the tractor while entering the intersection comes from not downshifting one gear from road gear. Start doing that, even though it's not a synchro tranny. It will handle the upshift clash just fine and you won't have to worry about being stalled with cross traffic coming. A great video. You're having the time of your life, whether you realize it now or not. Trust me, you are.
Yes, i'm dreading the day when I have to go off to college and wont be able to help on the farm anymore. And thank you, I was always taught to be very careful on the road, so much can go wrong when you're going those speeds in farm machinery. And that is true, but it was mostly just because I did not rev the tractor high enough as I let the clutch out. That tractors tranny is very old ( 10's of thousands of hours on it) and doesn't like to shift on the go anymore. When I started off after I left the field, I was in the highest gear, and did not stall. And I definitely agree, i'm not looking foreward to leaving the farm!
My dad had a 1086 when i was little some of my best memories are riding in the back behind the seat there was just enough of a ledge back there i could almost lay down and ride. Good times back then
you should look up chamberlains (aussie built) tractors , they were super good we ran them from dads time in the 1950s to current day . you couldn't wear these things out , john deere ended up buying chamberlains out, and replaced the perkins engine with there own they made plows drills seeders chisel plows, scarrifiers front end loaders and cranes
I remember jd saying ohhh cause the cab is round its quieter in the cab as the noise flows "around" the cab , was a very poor cabin , to prove it its interesting they went back to a more conventional cab, johnnys are ok I just had a terrific run with all our inter gear so I kinda prefer them even today :)
Like some previous commenters said: you can shift these tractors on the move. The gears will grind a lot because there are no synchros but it works and can save you from choking the tractor. I sometimes even shift our 986 without using the clutch, and yes that does work and sometimes grinds less.
can do a video showing shifting through the gears and the difference between stopping and shifting and shifting on the move? i am looking at buying a 1086. thanks
Are you shifting into park every time you want to change a gear? If you are you know you can leave it in high or low, and still shift to the 4 gears...
Chirs Hartke As I have said to the MANY other people that have commented this same thing, I am fully aware that I can shift this tractor without going into park, sometimes it just physically wont go as you can see by me struggling to get it into a higher gear. This tractor has almost 20,000 hours on an untouched tranny, she has some issues wanting to shift sometimes haha
That's all "RED" tractors can do is drive home. :) (I have a friend who has a 986 and all kidding aside they are nice tractors...The BEST are John Deere. :)
