This is what I grew up with. Still have them sitting on the farm. One of them my dad bought new in 1947.

As a child I spent hours sitting beside my Dad, as he pulled various implements through the fields with tractors such as this one, in Northern California . 😊

Remember those old behemoths well. Dad and his brothers had a couple of those TD-18's on our family farm, NW MO, back in the 1950's. Used them for land improvement back in the day. Seem to recall they bought them for the proverbial "pennies-on-the-dollar" from some dealer specializing in military surplus(one of 'em even had Olive Drab paint where it hadn't already rusted off). But, yeah, like a lot of older IH/Farmall diesel equipment they had a lower compression gasoline carburetor&manifold for starting the old clunkers, and after they'd sufficiently warmed-up you threw a lever which then bumped the compression ratio up by almost double...And switched you over to a different manifold and diesel injectors. On our old 18's, though, they didn't have mufflers--just straight exhaust pipes. I can honestly say that if they'd fired up that ol' beast in that equipment barn, with straight exhaust pipes, they'd just about deafened those poor folk.

We were ready for the noise, the fumes did get rid of the spiders that day. Thanks for your story.

Good point! A memorable experience no matter how you figure it!

I know where one of these is sitting, doesn't look too far gone to make work. Blade is a 4-way slide angle, good twin pulley winch with a good cable running up front, undercarriage at about 85%. I'd been on a TD8 once, but never knew about the dual fuel units, walked around the side and saw the plugs and distributor, caught me short till I figured out it was a simpler version of a pony motor.

The Cat seems to be restored nicely. However, in my experience the engine starts on gasoline with a carb and spark plugs, etc.; and when it is warmed up, the gas is shut off and you switch to diesel. The hot engine and momentum is what starts the diesel. I didn't see that happen at all in this video. It basically was quite boring watching it run on gas for such a long time and never fire up on diesel with your typical injector pump and injectors.

What year is this one? Im trying to figure it out, looks the have the later hydraulic steering boosters, late TD18A or 181 series? Has the boxed roller frames also. Beautiful restoration in red ❤

Where is this big machine located? Looks like a well restored machine, it runs very sweetly. The "International" badges on the side of the hood look likey have been sourced from an International truck. You appear to be doing everthing right with this old machine, warming it up gently and then idling it down to help it cool down before shutting it down to protect the cylinder heads from cracking!

Dontvwant to be picky but it is a crawler tractor not a bulldozer unless it has a blade fitted which this one hasn't

Loading this huge engine against it's brake like he is doing with a modern tractor with a turbo can result quickly in damaged components from the clutch through the transmission to the differentials. This enormous engine seems not powerful enough to destroy it's own drive train. But good enough for me for sure.

The last TD18A's produced was a 181 series with a flat deck
@michaelhalsall5684
@michaelhalsall5684 3 года назад
The last version of the TD-18 was the 182 series which was a slight update of the 181 series. The TD-18 was built from 1938-49, the TD-18A was built 1949-55, the TD-18 181was built 1955-56 and the TD-18 182 was built 1956-58. The TD-20 replace the TD-18 lineage.

Do you have a problem with a cracked head Sir. My neighbor would say this about the engine, "They either had an head that cracked or had a head about to crack. " He had this same dozer and was not really fond of the machine. Just saying fella. Good day too.

I had one and did a lot of work with it, great machine. But, if you run it hot you for sure would crack a head. There are three valves per cylinder and the metal between them was very thin. If you let the coolant boil the deed was done!

A huge behemoth painted lady only good as a boy toy without its blade and hydraulics. Nice that it still can start on gasoline then switch to diesel. Since you would be foolish to put a turbocharger on this poor engine it will drink copious amounts of fuel just to move itself. Lovely girl though except for the almost rusted through left side air box. Painted with lovely livery colors but showing past neglect and partial return to the soil from which we all spring from.
