No international student should be allowed to be in a 2 year program... a lot of these "students" end up dropping out and find a way to stay permanently in Canada

As someone that lives near Conestoga, it's crazy here. The rapid ingestion of international students completely changed the fabric of the area. Applyboard, who is local to Kitchener, recruits students for its biggest partner: Conestoga College. Absolute racket going on right now.

This country is rotten pretty much in every sector: Real estate, homelessness, drugs, education, hospitals, military…. It’s sickening howmuch this current government damage Canada

It's an immigration loop hole for human smuggling/migration. How many of these so call international students leave after completing their courses?

In my class 90% students are international. They all say we don’t care if learn anything we just want to take PR card. The quality of education is horrible. We have teachers that are not fluent in English, can you believe that.

These are not real colleges they are money making colleges. I studied in one of those colleges listed

Can I just point out that an overwhelming number of international students enrolling in schools that do not provide residence also has a big influence on the rent and housing market? Landlords have been charging international students illegal deposits and requiring them to sign illegal contracts because a lot of them don’t know local tenancy laws. This also raises the rent for domestic students and it’s just harder for students in general to find non-exploitative housing during their degree. The better the location of the house, the more predatory and toxic the contracts and rent charges get!

my buddy owns a few factories here in the GTA he told me that when he sees a resume with Conestoga collage listed on it he throws it in the garbage. why has Doug Ford turned public collages that used to be reputable into the new Everest collage in the minds of employers?

Canadian students shouldn't have to go through admissions hurdles if they can accommodate so many foreign seats. How many Canadian kids couldn't study the program of their choosing at these "community" colleges because courses were full?

Like no one knew this already, me a nobody knows this, it took government 5 years to figure it out.

When I was at St-Lawrence College in Cornwall a Liberal MP greated over 400 Students from one village??? The Professors & Directors had major problems with them all ! I had to quit due to the disturbance in class & PC room all the time! It got worse over the years ! I was on a Veteran program! We had a hard time getting in ! Go see for yourself!!

As a Canadian citizen not more international students because Canadian pay the price when this people living here . Everything over price not rent affordable for citizen. Finally not job for Canadian because the owners prefer students, all fast food restaurants full international students not place for local people and students jobs

And it is only one demographics from one country that's getting mostly all the student visa's..not very diverse at all.

It’s pretty bad that even in my program of engineering, we have some international students pretty much do little to no work in class and do the bare minimum to graduate and get an engineering degree with a PR. Nothing wrong with the few who do actually care and focus on the courses, but the few that don’t makes it suck.

It's ridiculous at this point... so many international students everywhere... just pure nonsense.

Find out what programs these international students are taking. Probably not for skilled employment that Canada needs right now.

Don't fool yourself they are not here to study, they come here to stay period. The graduation rate is less then %5...

International students working part-time also qualify for GST rebates and Carbon Tax incentive payouts, which should not be allowed as those incentives are meant for Canadians

A friend of mine who used to teach at one of the Toronto community colleges said that many of his classes had students who'd already received degrees from Indian universities and were here taking technician-level courses. Of course they all knew the theory and lecture attendance was spotty - for most it was an immigration dodge.

So this a problem that was started by Ontario colleges which eventually became a Canada wide issue. Ontario should shut this loophole down and it might help the housing issue in the next decade.

I knew there was a problem when I graduated from my program in 2012, and came back to teach at the college for the same program in 2021, and every single student (about 25), were international students. Not a single international student in my program, the same program, in 2011. All were DDS in their country (dentists), coming to get Dental Office Administration certificates (a huge education downgrade) so they could get their permanent residency.

It’s so hard for a Canadian born teenager to get a part time job these days…The “international students” seem to have all the jobs which were provided to Canadians.

Some students come to Canada but never go to school and ask for asylum .... we have enough foreigners in Canada

Taxpayers should not be financing the education of foreign students

Public or not, those are not serious academic institutions and they should not be allowed to accept so many international students. Only proper universities with good rankings should be admitting international students, not these schools selling entry to Canada.

Many of them cone to have babies,usually get pregnant as soon as they arrived in Canada,drop school when babies are born, and requested help from any charity or welfare system, until they get their resident papers.

Please stop international student applications permanently and focus on Canadian born children and their education now and the future.

An overwhelmingly majority of international students in Canada are taking post secondary programs to have a chance of obtaining PR. What is even worst is some of those same students who didn't finish their studies are still living in Canada.

I dont think this reporter "Valerie" understands what disproportionate representation means. If Ontario public colleges are accountabel for 40% of foreigh student visas and Ontario itself is home to approx. 40% of Canada's population, this just look to me as being proportional and as expected.

Government should have common sense, just because colleges are offering admission doesn’t mean IRCC should issue visas for everyone. There needs to be a cap of x number of students /year.

Half those schools are nothing but paper-mills. Degrees from places like Conestoga aren't worth as much as the paper its printed on. These private schools have been cashing in st the expense of Canadians, the local housing markets, and job markets. They should have been responsible for housing all these students to begin with

Take care of your home grown Canadians before you let the international students in, housing is a huge problem in our country right now. Take care of the home grown Canadians not the refugees.

College tuition has been frozen for the last few years only for domestic students, however its not the same international students. So taking in large number of international students makes BIG money.

Students from other countries are the main target demographic for most private tutoring centers. They traveled outside Canada and brought them directly here. Private schools are not equipped with enough facilities and space. The primary goal of most students is to remain permanently in Canada. Most of them come here to earn money and become Canadian citizens, after easily obtaining Canadian pensions.

I've lived in a town in a Canada for 50 yrs. Population 25,000 (near major cities that are diverse/liked). Until 4 years ago, most citizens in my town would RARELY have described our home as a "college town". If ever. Even though the college opened many decades ago. Even though it has always had a good reputation (and many programs). Even though we've liked it a lot. When the college was talked about, it was seen as a place where many minds go to learn every semester (to embrace a career). Plus international students of all races (like our town of numerous races) were seen as adventurers wishing to also learn about our country. Perhaps one day they would wish to stay in our country. Why? Because they grew to like it (and it's people) and wish to remain involved. These thoughts have changed IMMENSELY Since 2019, many long-term citizens feel like our college classrooms and dollar stores and convenience stores and hotels/motels/homes and restaurants have all quickly turned into a BIG immigration system for many (from one particular country especially) wanting PRs. I sound cruel but I'm not a cruel person. I'm just concerned by the high-pace and high-volume (housing prices are SOARING) … and about exactly how things in town are changing too. Because some rich men (mostly from same country) are also very quickly buying all the above places (minus college). AND they are changing things in ways where someway/somehow (by a far margin) eventually the owner benefits most ... followed by people HE trusts (from his birth continent) who REALLY need his help. And silence? Longtime citizens of my town are feeling more and more hurt by their sudden 'firings', by their hard-earned invoices (for completed work) not being paid, by feelings of discrimination in multiple areas, i.e. intangible services. The common denominator is centering around some men. They appear kind, yet occasionally not (in a strange way that's hard to explain). We've seen them not appreciating current staff (especially women). So much so that I Googled "caste system" recently. Something I never ever was interested in doing before. We are meeting students in contract marriages (IELTS spouse). Students who showed Canada they have savings to live off, but it turns out some only borrowed it for the application process. Our food bank and other charity services were advertised on RU-vid by students. Our transit service had to launch strict rules, i.e. lost bus passes registered in your name are now NEVER replaced (unlike before). I'm surrounded by fun citizens who have strived to be kind, racially-diverse-oriented, and WELCOMING people. But now they're not knowing what to think. And the concerned are not all with European roots. Nor without ties to above mentioned country (heck these longterm Canadians often seem the most angry). And all the violence/extortion happening in Ontario and BC this year that's stemming from another country (& making world news) is definitely not helping with any of this. So many In this town are THRILLED by recent caps etc.. Because the biggest thing our town is hoping to continue to avoid is hate crimes. We want EVERYONE here to be ok. While wondering if enough homes/buildings could have prevented a lot of the above (?). PS Many newcomers we've met are great. And we are aware that some wonderful students are probably going through 'degrees of hell' in Canada (which hurts our hearts).

The reporter says there are 1300 colleges and universities in Canada and then looks at only the top 10. That doesn't give you a complete picture at all. Just because 9 of the top 10 are public institutions that doesn't tell me whether or not 1000 private colleges rank from 11th to 1010th place and have 90% of the international students over all for example. The analysis in the story is woefully incomplete.

Knew it!! Tired of people acting like it is primarily an issue of these small colleges. It's probably the fancy university you went to that is doing it. For them it's a side hustle. Sometimes they even own some of the small colleges so they don't dirty their prestigious names. As Canadians choose to have less kids the universities have to find a way to continue their profits with kids from elsewhere.

I think getting seats in public collages is getting easy for immigrant,therefore collages urgently needs to update their criteria and needs to make their admission exams more tougher so that only worthy immigrants can get admission.The difficulty level should depends on the nationality of immigrant.

They should stay in their own countries, period. They get their degrees in their own countries where if they get loans, they can pay them back before stepping foot in another country. Enough already.

Ok so who's going to pay for the housing? Who's going to pay for the health care? We can't put the added strain on those systems just to make colleges happy. We don't have the resources. If College want international students that badly then let them foot the bill for their housing and other services and then see if they think it's such a good idea.

If the demand is high, prices goes up . Basic economics. Am refering to housing, rent, grocerues and students fees also.

Ford reduced tuition by 10% and froze tuition at that rate as soon as he got into power. It’s no surprise that this happened mainly in Ontario.

They aren't getting it - the published numbers include students attending private colleges with a partnership with a public college, those students are considered students of the parent college (except Conestoga who does all their satellite campuses on their own without private partnerships). So it is as they say, private colleges driving a lot of it. I would estimate on average 2/3 of those students are in the private college partnerships.

That most foreign students come to Ontario isn't an unexpected result as Ontario has the largest population. The more interesting statistic would be what types and what percentage of spots are being occupied by foreign students? Is there an overal increase, or decrease, of opportunity for domestic students in these areas of study?

Sheridan College Davis Campus - Brampton has to be the biggest culprit.

Schools do not issue "permits". They issue the acceptance letters that is a document required by IRCC. IRCC agent then makes a determination based on a dozen other documents if the student meets the criteria to be approved. While it is true that the approvals they released is excessive, ultimately it was up to IRCC to decide if a permit/visa will be issued. Interesting that was not explained in this report 🤨. It's funny that they keep passing the responsibility to the other person when this was a collaborative effort

The fact that UBC isn't on that list suggests to me that it is because its numbers are already exorbitantly high.
