You know - this looks better to me than the WDR Big Band ever did - even with Maceo! Features Anne Mae Winburn and also Tiny Davis. She's Crazy With The Heat Do You Wanna Jump Children? How'Bout That Jive? Round & Brown Blues
My mom, Norma Carson Newman, played trumpet with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Not sure if she was with them in '46. The stories she used to tell were always riveting. She passed in late 2005. I'm SO missing her today. Happy Mother's Day, Mom. I love you!
My aunts which were twins were also in the International Sweethearts of Rhythm at Piney Woods School. They both played Sax. One of my aunts are still living in Denver, Colo.
That's Vi Burnside on tenor saxophone here is the band line-up: Anna Mae Winburn leader/vocalist Tiny Davis, Ray Carter, Mim Polak, Johnny Mae Stansbury (trumpets); Ina Belle Byrd, Helen Jones, Jean Travis (trombones); Vi Burnside, Ros Cron, Willie Mae Wong, Grace Bayron, Helen Saine (reeds); Johnny Mae Rice (piano); Margaret 'Trump' Gibson (bass); Pauline Braddy (drums)
I don't know where you got this but THANK YOU. Anna Mae was my aunt and I always thought she was so glamorous. She and all the women in the band were just the best. I appreciate her music much more now that I am older.
Anna Mae winburn was my grandmothers Aunt. Loved hearing the stories about her and Aunt Easter and even about Red Perkins and the Dixie Ramblers. I appreciate this music :)
My late dad, Eddie Durham (DurhamJazz com) was the Musical Director for this Band. I am also in touch with living legend organist SARAH MCLAWLER, who hasn't recorded in 50 years, but will release a new CD "UNDER MY HAT" Sept. 7, 2010 - already on Amazon pre-sale...Support this CD!
The ISR had that rich ensemble sound a lot of male bands envied in the 40's. Tiny Davis's tenor's tone would be hard to beat today. They were superb and Anne May Winburn memorable as their leader. A credit to the great Big Band Era.
Anne Mae Winburn e sua famosa Oquestra only for women,Grandes instrumentistas.maravilhosas. Grande sucesso na década de 40. desde Pará de Minas,MG.Brazil.
They were certainly leaders of a new direction. Thank god for them breaking the male-stero type and going out on their own. Their music is fantastic. Very inspirational.
So cool, I love this :)! Inspirational for girls and women all around the world, who are always encouraged to sing but not play instruments. Sadly it doesnt get as much coverage in music books as it should get. Racially diverse and total girl-power :)!!
Coleman Hawkins inspired tenor swingin, band.Just very good musicans Iv'e heard a lot of male bands that couldn't swing half a good as these women a testament too staying at it go on wail sisters.
Entertainment has always been one of the few acceptable crossover points for minorities. They probably played clubs where they would not have been served as customers or had to enter by a back door. On tour the white members would have been allowed into places that their sister band members of color were denied. And of course in Europe, where they toured often, they faced none of that discrimination.
Hi Bob ... These are great clips! Thanks so much for sharing them! I was wondering where you found them? I looking Sweethearts videos and am trying to track as many down as possible for a research project. Thanks so much!
