That means nothing. Milestones is one of the great jazz albums. Both 'Straight No Chaser' and' Milestones' slow down. Still one of the great jazz albums of all time. Humans generally are not metronomic, and if they are, probably not much soul.
All of today's Jazz Trumpet and Flugelhorn players' sound, technique and improvisational approach comes from Woody's, Freddie's, Mile's, Clifford's and Dizzy's Genius innovations. May they all be Jammin' in God's Eternal Peace....
Two of the greatest Legends both who I've been fortunate to meet , I've also was lucky enough to study with Woody on a few occasions such a beautiful person such a monster trust me there are no trumpet players alive on this planet right now they can even come close them.I can listen to Woody Shaw and Freddie Hubbard and I can tell you who's who which ones playing what the two distinct styles are very easy to distinguish and if you ever want to hear one of the greatest trumpet Duets got to check out the Eternal triangle with Freddy and Woody .My prayers go out to Freddy and Woody hopefully to see you again one day.You are both trully missed ,and your spirits will be preserved for eternity through the hearts and souls of those who love you.
The camera work in Freddie's solo is like watching the Blair Witch Project!! Couldn't they hold one camera view for more than a millisecond? Killing band though!
I once saw Woody play a phenomenal version of "I Can't Get Started" at the now defunct Both/And. After he finished I shook his hand and said "You really smoked the place tonight he nodded and just said, "I didn't cut it". Lord what a perfectionist!! I think he was a most under rated trumpeter and when asked by Down Beat who was his favorite trumpet players, Miles said "Woody Shaw, Lester Bowie and Don Cherry". He even urged Columbia to sign him on."
There’s a 1986 Miles interview uploaded on here with Ben Sidran on which Miles very enthusiastically gushes about Woody even saying he reminds him of Dizzy Gillespie in the fact that you always get a good solo from him!
In different circumstances Freddie Hubbard would have been a world heavyweight champ or a great fast bowler. Everything he plays - no,says - exudes pugnacity - has did the man himself.
there's footage of this same group minus Shaw from another European festival from around the same time, so it's more likely this was Shaw sitting in with a working group than a "pickup band"
+SRV1 I personally don't think Doc could hold up with these guys blowing over changes. Doc is a great lead player, but compared to Freddie or Woody...?
Doc is a GREAT trumpeter but even he himself wouldn't claim to be one of the top 3 jazz improvisers on the trumpet, back then or now. Not taking anything away from his obvious instrumental virtuosity but it's the truth.
Merci...
direct bass is killing this ....never put the bass through the system... this is painful ... death by walking.... Freddies mic is up to better compete with the white noise of the bass.... Woody could not get on top of it.... if woody would have had a clear shot at a harmonic space not buried he would have been great
I read your comment that this was a pickup group. I really don't think so, each member of this ensemble have played together before. Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw were probably promoting their double take album.
Nah, Woody is more on the Woody side of it. Woody and Miles were VERY dissimilar players. Nobody before Woody played the things on trumpet that he did. And there are things he played on trumpet that still have yet to be played by anybody around today.
Hubcap still at the top of his powers, and Woody Shaw dido, two of the all time greatest, distinct yet compatible styles, Joe Henderson -Tenor Giant, McCoy Piano Giant, Louis Haynes and Avery Sharpe a swinging, driving rhythm section. Thanks for sharing.
Way too much amp, not enough wood. He's certainly no P.C., but could be if he'd raise the action and turn the amp down, learn some bop solos...lay back some...maybe he's done so by now, this is quite a while ago...He's certainly got spirit.
@@johnvalentine3456I feel you. Part of it could be the concert feed only got the direct signal in the mix. I bet the sound was actually blended live and sounded a lot different, probably better
