Due to their cognitive limitations, they fail to grasp that the idea might seem foolish to them simply because it exceeds their intellectual understanding.
To make a conclusion about HALF of the intersection without addressing the obvious other half is just as stupid. The tape SEEMS to worsen the problem but really makes the solution more clear. Confusion comes by not observing til completion! If affixing two pieces of wood with a nail, would you stop and criticize with the nail only halfway driven? Seems some people would!
Or visited class... the amount of times I or someone else opened with "this may be (a) stupid (question)" and proceeds to explain a mixture between gut feeling and logic that has the teacher either think for a long while and go you know what we should find that out or immediately say "that's exactly right" is crazy
Yup, and one of the biggest contributors to that is that we tend to be stronger in one type of thinking, and highly intelligent people often gravitate to certain area they get obsessed with and know all about, but at the same time they may grab all the little paper clippings left over after making paper snowflakes, throw them in the air and go "Snow fall!", while his GF stares at him for a bit before palm starts to move towards its comfortable resting place on her face. story about a friend of mine, who is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met but at other areas he isn't better than a toddler (no neurological issues, just disinterest) :D
i once solved a big problem with a computer program at work in about 10 hours.. without first checking if there was a fix already.. there was. a team of people getting paid much more than me had already uploaded a fix (3 month after releasing the software) the day before i fixed it. the fix was on the top of my works homepage ready to be downloaded. im so smart
@@philpyung4831you're already unintentionally rubbing the lid against the wall every time you close it, therefore by gluing the sandpaper to that spot, you've taken a hundred deliberate passes of the piece of sandpaper and gotten them for free.
@@TheAce736 What about the efficiency of an orbital sander? And how about having a desk that is properly finished instead of having sand paper stuck to the side where you will rub your arm on it.That won't feel good
I've never heard that before, but there is absolutely an intersection between brilliant and stupid. It's those moments like "I dont know whether to fire him, or give him a raise."
I was a manager in a Mexican restaurant once and I've seen a whole lot of poor man ingeneering. Trash bag as a pressure steeming device definitely makes it to top-3, but my personal favorite is when I came to kitchen and saw a whole gas stove wrapped in tin foil, legs and all. The explanation was "it's so it doesn't get as dirty" and it actually became a standard practice, because IT DID HELP WITH GREASE
I've been called a hoarder for having acrylic, glass, aluminium, steel, wood and other materials for use in making things. This is by the same people who come to me asking for their abused equipment to be fixed. Including electronic devices. I did my trade as an electronic service technician, but really diversified to other materials too. Everything is all fking a waste of time till the hypocrites want my help, and they still don't appreciate the help. So I've moved and none of them know where I am.
Yeah but this is not the way to fix that problem, there's a more easy solution. I think he didn't wanted to scrape the other wood but use glue is even worse.
If you go around thinking you're smart you have a higher chance to be avg or below avg. Truly intelligent people don't care about how smart they are they just want to gain knowledge and truth
Correct me if I am wrong but a similar principle was used in the early turbojet construction. They couldn't figure out optimal clearance between turbine blades and the turbine housing because the blades would expand and contract. So, they built the inlet hole bigger than needed and added oak rings that the turbine blades barely touched. Then, while running the engine, the turbine blades shaved the wooden rings to reveal the ideal clearance numbers.
Actually that is still done. A material called an abrade-able is applied on the inlet so that the fan will rub away just enough material to minimize tip clearance and maximize fan efficiency.
Until the wood becomes moist and expands a bit from high humidity or if hinges become loose with time, and you can't get it open, best to put a proper clearance on it that will never fail.
@jamesparke6252 won't become moist if you maintain it (finishes/oils) and also if you brush a mixture of wood glue and water on it (water proof wood glue)
@@blueberry766 It certainly can still get "moist" even if you coat it as good as you can. You will definitely slow the process, but you can't say coating wood with oil will completely prevent moisture from entering. It's much more of a complex process to create whats called "stabilized wood" and involved vacuum and pressure chambers.
And I dislike most variations of that saying, mainly for two reasons: 1) If it's actually stupid, the fact that it works doesn't make it not stupid and it would still be better to find a smarter solution in most cases (there are going to be occasional exceptions). 2) Thinking something is stupid does not make it so. It's possible that something is clever but is evaluated as stupid instead, in which case it's not stupid, it's just been incorrectly evaluated. That said, I suspect that many cases where this analysis would apply nobody is sufficiently wise and detached from the situation to be able to evaluate them correctly, so the point might be moot.
I similarly never liked the quote, as it's often misattributed to instances where clearly a better solution can be achieved. It's like it only accounts for the answer, rather than the efficiency used to get it. For certain instances, i don't doubt just getting the answer is all that's needed, but with programing for instance, you'd do best to be as sufficient and efficient as possible, lest we have a yandere dev situation again. @@benjaminmiddaugh2729
The stupid part was not designing the thing properly in the first place, then building it accurately to the design. This is extremely stupid and a total waste of time
@@redeyestones3738 The mistake already happened, sure he could undo his work but it's much more satisfying to double-down instead Work smart, not hard. Sandpaper seems smart lol (assuming it works)
lol cant he just use a band sander and sand the top really quickly while its open instead of taking all that extra work to sand it manually and the worst way possible
This is actually a good idea, because when you do get it to fit nicely, you can get rid of the sand paper and it’ll have just a little bit more of a gap for tolerances, nice
Or you could just sand down the side that you planned to GLUE A FCKN PIECE OF SANDPAPER TO AND OPEN AND CLOSE YOUR DESK 10000000000x’s……… Literally, just sand the wall side by hand and paint or finish it. It’ll look better than before and you won’t have a fckd up corner with shreds of glued sandpaper still stuck to the wall which you’d probably have to use sandpaper to remove. 😂
@@MDSF90 tbf, you could use sth other than glue, and focus on other things while you sand it little by little every day instead of just moving it up and down continuously like the uploader I mean this is the first vid/clip I've stumbled upon, but it seems like a personal thing and not sth made commercially And if you were - for some reason - rly dedicated to using the wall sand paper method, then you could make an automatic heavy dipping motion
That's a hell of an idea. A handheld belt sander or just a regular vibrating sander would get the job done maybe in about a 10th the time, but this will do

@@Duck_sideWhat are you on about lmfao? That's a counterweight, and there's absolutely no evidence to suggest that they would be powered for some reason?
Part of the stupid part is remember that the sandpaper adds to the dimension of the surface you're attempting to clear. Once it's removed, your fold down desktop should fit better but will feel extremely tight until it is.
Bro...are u a bit stupid? I think thats the least Problem u have with a Pc in a wood workshop. Everwhere in this Room will be sawdust. Or do u wanna say, don´t ever put a pc in a wood workshop. Then u have no clue about working anmd how to be efficient. If i have to always swap the room, when i need to sue the pc, i would Probably on long term waist more money in time, then the Pc with all the equpment is worth. So whats more Stupid, waisting time and money to save an Pc that is Probably as good as nothing worth or doing this?
Small tip. Stupid is not knowing what u are saying. If u have watched the Video with attention, u could have seen that this is in a wood workshop. So Sawdust is always everywhere anyways. And i wouln´t either put the Pc in another room just to save it. I mean if i had to always change room fort it i would waste more of my working time and with it more of my money in changing rooms then the PC is actually worth. And maybe changing rooms dosn´t seem like much, but if u do that 10 Times a day, and thats lets say for about 3 or 4 Years u will have waisted a lot of time. MAybe one time dosn´t seem like much but it adds up and up and up. And at somepoint u have Hours of just "changing room". And when i think how high my true horly wage is, idk if the pc is wotrth that efford. Very very Probably i could havbe made more money in that time that thios pc is worth.

But in the end its still dumb to get Uopset about Wood dust in a wood workshop even if it is near your equipment. An exception. The equipment is far away from the actual work area. Then maybe u should cover ur Pc for the duration of the operation.
I don’t think you understand how things work The keyboard is not near the sawdust, like at all, and it’s a apple keyboard, where gaps are way too small in the first place
If it works to pull a nail out by hand if I takes 1 hour is it considered stupid if I don’t pick up the hammer that can do it in seconds just because at the end of the hour I was able to get it with my hand this is stupid there are many more efficient ways to solve that issue the one the guy did is the last choice any sane person would choice

Honestly I fail to see the issue with the idea The worst part is dealing with the sandpaper afterwards but this guarantees the corner will end up fitting and it'll even have a thin bit of leeway because sandpaper has a tiny bit of width to it
@@inarisarp Sand down by how much? you would have to sand a little, reattach, take if off sand some more etc. otherwise you could accidentally sand too much and make a gap. This way with a bit of patience it will fit perfectly.
@@inarisarp but this way u fill have a perfectly small gap. Or do u think the sandpaper is made out of nothing? Or where will it be, when its stops grinding the side down? Does it goes in a void or a spacecrack that prevents it from making a gap of its own thickness.

SAME, i bought too thick carpet and i just sanded the door like this😂 The guy who rents the house for me didnt even notice or know about what i did to his doors
That’s actually a pretty common fix for like a door jam that just wants to get hung up in one place you tape sandpaper to the jam and let the door run against it for a couple weeks and it sands itself right up to perfection
Almost every instance, people who invented something were really trying to invent something else, and made something to make our lives much easier by accident!

It’s called lapping. It’s a real thing used for precision engineering work. Normally you use lapping compound but this is just a crude version of that.
Show me a man who has never done something stupid in his life, and I'll show you a man who has never done anything. But, that contraption, is 2 lifetimes of stupid.
It’s actually not a completely terrible idea 😂. It’s sort of a similar concept to how we sand the heel of an acoustic guitar neck so that it sits perfectly flush with the body. The only difference is that instead of the sandpaper being stationary and the shelf moving to generate friction and remove material, we would cut strips of cloth-backed emery paper and wedge them between the two surfaces. Then you pull the sandpaper through the joint, so the friction is generated by the motion of the abrasive instead of by the motion of the piece itself. Look, I’m not saying that we aren’t walking a tightrope between smart and stupid here. We definitely are. But I’ve had a whole lot of stupid ideas over the years, and some of them eventually evolved into smart ideas! Sometimes your first idea might be a bad idea overall, but it might contain the right idea within it, such that all you have to do is make one little change to your approach in order to discover a more precise, more effective, or more efficient way of doing something. So I say let’s keep walking that tightrope and see what our stupid monkey brains can come up with. Sometimes you might just find a gem.
From what I can see, you're not a Woodworker nor a Craftsman. Because neither would accept such fitment as an end result. This conclusion is also based on the fit & finish of every piece of wood within this shot.
