Interstate 90 is, as you know, the longest Interstate in the country, and today we've got a supercut of the entire route from Bostonto Seattle! This one's for my fellow completionist nerds. Control City Freak is updated weekly and covers every two digit Interstate Highway in America. I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!
All images of roads and signs come from Google Street View unless otherwise specified.
The Interstate 90 Shield comes from Wikipedia, en.wikipedia.o...
Maps used in this video come from Google Maps www.google.com...

Ritzville - that is important for one reason. Washington Highway 395 is a major southern route to the Tri-Cities. RE the Ritzville sign is important for that reason.

During my 2024 summer road trip, I drove several different segments along I 90 westbound. The biggest segments were from I 91 near Springfield to I 75 near Toledo, and from I 94 near Billings to I 5 in Seattle. The only other fragment I’ll list my observations of is the stretch where I 90 is out of grid in relation to I 94 (the Indiana Toll Road west of the Lake Station interchange and over the Chicago Skyway). I was also on I 90 westbound through Chicago and headed northwest out of Madison, but I’ll save those observations for the I 94 westbound video. The overhead and mileage control on the Massachusetts Turnpike leaving Springfield westbound is Albany, which makes sense. As a bonus observation, while along I 93 going into the Big Dig of Boston, the control from downtown is actually Worcester. In New York, the controls are still Albany entering the Berkshire Connector, and along the free segment leading into Albany, though later on references to New York City and Buffalo start to appear. When I 90 transfers over to the New York Thruway, both controls are for Buffalo. This is a bit of a point of contention for me, as there is more than enough real estate to make Utica (290k metro), Syracuse (650k metro) and Rochester (1.05M metro) primaries in their own right. After Buffalo, the controls switch to Erie, which makes sense. In Pennsylvania, the very first mileage sign actually downgrades Erie to a secondary in favor of Cleveland, which, considering there isn’t too much left before Erie, I don’t take issue with. This continues throughout the small northwestern sliver. Cleveland is the primary control entering Ohio, as expected. Leaving Cleveland, the overheads and mileage controls sign Toledo, which is good. The last control I saw on I 90 along this stretch that I traveled was for Chicago. I guess it’s okay, but there’s still two other sizable urban areas beforehand: namely Elkhart (210k metro) and South Bend (330k metro). For the out of grid stretch of I 90 (in relation to I 94), the obvious choice is used: Chicago. Not much more to add here. At the end of I 94 near Billings, the overheads and mileage signs list out Butte, which I’ve stated before is woefully outdated. Butte is only half as big as it was 100 years ago, and today isn’t any better than an Albert Lea or a Lake City. Especially when Bozeman, a rapidly growing area that is in almost a statistical tie for the second biggest urban area in the state, is still neglected. However, the good news is that once out of Butte, I 90 is not only perfectly signed for the rest of Montana, but also the rest of the route period. The next control is Missoula, and the mileage signs approaching Lookout Pass largely feature Coeur d’Alene as the primary mileage control. I say largely, as there were some where Spokane was the bottom line. I’m okay with this, seeing how the two are right next to each other. Throughout most of Idaho, the primary control is still CDA, although it does change to Spokane near the Fourth of July Summit area. I also remember that you seem to like to take jabs at Post Falls, but from what I’ve seen, I don’t think there were more than two such mileage signs featuring Post Falls; and every single time, it had Spokane right below it. Washington is about as straightforward as possible when it comes to controls. I don’t think there was a single overhead or mileage sign prior to Spokane proper, and afterwards, it was completely exclusively signed for Seattle.

Nice. I must admit I prefer this style (a full eastbound video and a separate full westbound video, like you did for I-80) over splitting an interstate in half or thirds (like the original I-90 videos), as the former way is more how I would drive an interstate. But I get the latter is probably much easier to research, so whichever way you go, keep up the good work! P. S. 4:26 They do that a lot in Oklahoma. I have noticed that lanes seem to be set up to try to trap people on toll roads. Where the Muskogee Turnpike starts in Broken Arrow, the turnpike is the main line road. And on each end of the Cherokee Turnpike on US 412, the 2 lanes are split between the turnpike and the free route. Like they hope people will get forced onto the turnpike by forgetting to change lanes or a ton of traffic in the lane to the free route.

Lincolns Boyhood home signs were the original Indiana signs or the last generation of signs for Indiana. I'm 30 and as a child in the late 90s my grandparents would take me camping with them at their trailer by Brookville Lake in Indiana and that Lincoln boyhood home sign was the sign at the Ohio Indiana border on the state route mu grandpa drove on. This border was unique as in the Ohio state route 725 ends at the stateline road, but you continue left on Stateline road and nearly immediately turn right onto Indiana State Road 44 at the next right. I also suggest if you do any state routes for Ohio or Indiana, IN. 44, 101, 1 are good Indiana routes in eastern Indiana. In Ohio, 3, 4, 48, 73, 122, 123, 503, 725 are good ones.

Something just occurred to me when you mentioned that West Virginia's welcome signs were similar to those of Wyoming and Montana but worked better. I believe all of West Virginia's welcome signs along interstates are mounted on overhead gantries. If those western states would do this, then they would be much less susceptible to "sticker graffiti", which, let's face it, is the real issue with their signs.

See my comments for the I-90 Eastern video. For the Massachusetts portion, I'll repeat: it make no sense to sign I-95 for NH as one would have gone to I-93 North from Logan Airport and thus use the Sumner Tunnel instead of the Ted Williams Tunnel. I-90 has no exit in Stockbridge, so West Stockbridge makes sense. In order to get to Stockbridge westbound, one would get off in Lee and follow MA 102, the parallel road to I-90 for the rest of the commonwealth to NY 22, to get there. At the start of the video, you mention "Highway 1A." That is wrong. In the northeastern states the state numbered highways are called Route (pronounced "root" and not "rout") X.

'Reasonable and Proper' speed limit in Montana? So what does that mean, that there was no speed limit? Meaning you could go as fast as you want, as long as you're not endangering other drivers? Sounds a lot like the Autobahn in Germany.

Since we're doing a supercut, I may as well create my list of mileage sign controls for the entirety of the westbound direction. In New York, I'm also going to include in () what the real exit number SHOULD be (sequential exits suck!). Again, MY mileage signs prioritize the MOST IMMEDIATE urban area (>50k population) along the highway; this does NOT mean that I am against skipping the more modest sized areas on overheads at major interchanges. WORCESTER: BEGINNING--Massachusetts Exit 94 (via I 290 E; 6.6 miles to the first exit in Worcester) SPRINGFIELD: Massachusetts Exit 94--Massachusetts Exit 54 (via I 91 S; 11.1 miles to the first exit in Springfield) ALBANY/SCHENECTADY: Massachusetts Exit 54--New York Exit 8 (REAL 356) (1.6 miles to the first exit in Albany) SCHENECTADY: New York Exit 8--New York Exit 25 (REAL 342) (via I 890 W; 3.4 miles to the first exit in Schenectady) UTICA: New York Exit 25--New York Exit 29A (REAL 285) (22.2 miles to the only exit in Utica) SYRACUSE: New York Exit 29A--New York Exit 34A (REAL 219) (via I 481 S to I 690 W; 4.9 miles to the first exit in Syracuse) ROCHESTER: New York Exit 34A--New York Exit 45 (REAL 145) (via I 490 W; 10 miles to the first exit in Rochester) BUFFALO: New York Exit 45--New York Exit 50 (REAL 76) (via I 190 N; 6.5 miles to the first exit in Buffalo) MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP/ERIE: New York Exit 50--Pennsylvania Exit 37 (7.2 miles to the only exit in Millcreek Township) ERIE: Pennsylvania Exit 37--Pennsylvania Exit 22 (via I 79 N; 4.1 miles to the first exit in Erie) CLEVELAND(*): Pennsylvania Exit 22--Ohio Exit 179 (2.5 miles to the first exit in Cleveland(*)) MANSFIELD: Ohio Exit 179--Ohio Exit 170B (via I 71 S; 91.2 miles to the only convenient exit in "Mansfield") TOLEDO: Ohio Exit 170B--Ohio Exit 71 (via I 280 N; 8.8 miles to the first exit in Toledo) ELKHART: Ohio Exit 71--Indiana Exit 107 (11.2 miles to the first exit in Elkhart) SOUTH BEND: Indiana Exit 107--Indiana Exit 92 (18.9 miles to the first exit in South Bend) CHICAGO: Indiana Exit 92--Indiana Exit 10 (9.5 miles to the first exit in Chicago) RACINE: Indiana Exit 10--Illinois Exit 43B (via I 94 W; 57.3 miles to the first exit in "Racine") ROCKFORD: Illinois Exit 43B--Illinois Exit 20 (4.6 miles to the first exit in Rockford) JANESVILLE: Illinois Exit 20--Wisconsin Exit 183 (7.7 miles to the first exit in Janesville) MADISON: Wisconsin Exit 183--Wisconsin Exit 156 (14.5 miles to the first exit in Madison) LA CROSSE: Wisconsin Exit 156--Wisconsin Exit 12 (7.4 miles to the first convenient exit in La Crosse) ROCHESTER: Wisconsin Exit 12--Minnesota Exit 218 (via U.S. 52 N; 5.7 miles to the first exit in Rochester) AMES: Minnesota Exit 218--Minnesota Exit 159 (via I 35 S; 118.2 miles to the first exit in Ames) SIOUX FALLS: Minnesota Exit 159--South Dakota Exit 406 (7 miles to the first exit in Sioux Falls) RAPID CITY: South Dakota Exit 406--South Dakota Exit 78 (15.5 miles to the first exit in Rapid City) BILLINGS: South Dakota Exit 78--Montana Exit 503 (46.9 miles to the first exit in Billings) BOZEMAN: Montana Exit 503--Montana Exit 340 (30.7 miles to the first exit in Bozeman) MISSOULA: Montana Exit 340--Montana Exit 113 (7.1 miles to the first exit in Missoula) COEUR D'ALENE: Montana Exit 113--Idaho Exit 43 (28.2 miles to the first exit in Coeur d'Alene) SPOKANE: Idaho Exit 43--Washington Exit 294 (10.6 miles to the first exit in Spokane) SEATTLE: Washington Exit 294--Washington Exit 9 (5.8 miles to the first exit in Seattle) LACEY/OLYMPIA: Washington Exit 9--END (via I 5 S; 54.5 miles to the first exit in Lacey) This list is a bit different from the consolidated one across the three videos. These are the changes I made: a) I 90 W to I 291 W isn't a true freeway-to-freeway interchange (it involves a traffic light), so the best direct freeway-only route is via I 91 S. b) Several surface street exits after I 86 merges with I 90 W serve Erie, but only I 79 provides a freeway route into the city. c) There are some exits along I 90 in Cleveland that are separated from the portion containing downtown Cleveland by a community called Bratenahl. My "first exit in Cleveland" is the first one AFTER Bratenahl. This explains the (*) next to Cleveland. d) Racine was added because it is closer to the I 90/94 split near Chicago than Rockford . It is an urban area independent of nearby Milwaukee. However, since this route involves a concurrency between two Interstates, it can just as easily alternate with Rockford (the same applies to La Crosse/Eau Claire/Wausau along the triple concurrency. If there's a modest urban area that an interchange overhead can skip over, it's this one. e) Most of Wisconsin Exit 156 is within Madison city limits, so I count this as the first exit in Madison. f) Ames was added because it is closer to the I 90/U.S. 52 exit near Rochester than Sioux Falls. It is an urban area independent of nearby Des Moines, but this is admittedly the most disposable distance control I have on here. Another perfect example of a modest area that overheads can skip over. g) Since Mercer Island is the only community between I 405 and Seattle, I have a natural continuation of I 90 W to I 5 S on the mileage controls (even though most traffic would've taken I 405 S). Also, I have Lacey as equal to Olympia because the two cities are almost identical in population (58.3k and 56.9k) My reasoning for every other mileage listing (particularly the "contentious" ones) will be in the Western, Central and Eastern videos, so I'd recommend you look at my comments there BEFORE asking my reasoning in this video; I very likely already discussed it.

You mean all those tourists in Cleveland? I don't think many people are going anywhere on the Indiana Toll Road/Ohio Turnpike/PA Turnpike/ Jersey Turnpike on vacation, but there's still plenty of important places to sign between Chicago and New York. If vacationers are the only consideration, Sandusky should be the only city signed on the Ohio Turnpike.
