How heartening to see all the people and all the volunteers working those fields; granted disheartening to see tje flooded field just hours later. There was a time that in this state folks would work similarly to save crops for one reason or another.
We have to abandon low lying areas as floodplains. Farmers need to use regenerative practices. A healed soil can absorb a foot of rain but there's nothing to be done permanently for those living too close to water except move them.
When I lived there in the 80's, the Intervale was just beginning to be redeveloped after a long period of abandonment. WE ALL KNEW the reason they'd always been a hit-or-miss resource was due to flooding. Why is everyone acting like this is some rare and unpredictable tragedy?
I just saw this RU-vid video of growing rice in Maryland. "The Unlikely Success of Farming Rice in Maryland | MDF&H". Heck, why not in flooded Vermont?! Leave the fields where they are. Change crops.
Developers and local government officials are to blame poor engineering over profit. My mothers old beautiful neighborhood now floods from all the subdivisions that corralled their beautiful are! Unreal, how irresponsible humans are! Sad to see
Starting to look like many attempts at improving local sustainability & resilience are not working very well. Never mind that re-localization is inflationary due to higher costs, there is also the problem of accelerating climate change and extreme weather events interfering with lots of hard work. Time to more closely examine evolving local conditions and adjust planning to try to adapt to the climate transition that is unfolding around us.
Yeah just for the homeless people everybody is going to be misplaced for a minute or two rivermont we come back strong or just recumbent as elderly people that go into State and politics and make it worse
It is not climate change its the world is changing because of the 1940s until present of will not change we rather drink out of a straw made out of paper but get a cup a plastic when you think we should have a paper cup and a plastic straw
Dams have a lot to do with this issue where to have nowhere to run their natural course and humans have been so negligent in seeing the bad things that's coming all based on choices made by decades of bad choices
The country cannot move forward for the best of all until faults of the past & present are corrected just that simple. And folks are just wasting their time & money trying to rebuild without the past being corrected. It's a very useless game!
Because we have elderly in office not new won't people that have just moved here and think they can just be from honors start making rice patties if you think you can't keep your crops
