"Listen more than you speak (Robson, 2002) I actually have a problem with this, myself. I love talking to people, what I can do? Just be careful" :). I have the same problem :D. Thanks for the very important pointers.

Thank you for this interesting video, it was very useful and to the point. I have a question concerning sharing the interview guide with participants. After I got my participants' consents some of them asked to see the types of questions to be asked beforehand. What do you think of that? and do you think doing so will affect what the participants will choose to share and hence the quality of data in general?

Hi, thank you for your positive feedback and for your great question. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with sharing the rough outline of the interview guide before the interview, Especially if the participants, themselves, asked for it. From the ethical point of view (I will be posting a video about research ethics soon), they have the right to know, as this has to do with them giving fully informed consent to participate. In some studies, I actually sent my participants the interview guide without them asking me for it, because I wanted to give them a chance to reflect on the topics I would be discussing with them. I understand your concerns, but even if they didn't know the questions in advance, they may still choose to withhold some information (and they have every right to do so too). Finally, you do not have to give them the full, detailed interview guide with all the questions, sub-questions, follow-up questions, etc., but instead give them a rough interview guide with the main questions and explain that some additional questions may emerge during the interview (as I would expect anyway - the interview is a dynamic and flexible situation, and a good interviewer needs to be responsive to it - as I explain in the 3rd episode of this miniseries). I hope this helps, and good luck with your research!

I often struggle with generating variety of interview questions. Lets say I might know that I would like to understand how young men define masculinity. But my struggle lies in what kind of questions to ask to get this information. Of course, I could generate few questions on my own but then I might have missed many others. So, what is your approach to coming up with questions?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 года назад
my approach is what I discuss in this video. Just try to think of as many possible ways to ask about what you want to find out as possible. Of course you can always argue that you may miss something, and this is the accepted risk of qualitative research , I would said. Additionally, What you want to find out in the interviews will also depend on your knowledge of the literature. By the time you are thinking of your interview questions, you will have read plenty of literature and formulated your research aims and questions. Based on this knowledge, you will have some ideas for what, for example, masculinity may involve. If I was to develop such interview guide today, I agree it would not be very complete because I have not done any reading on this topic, but for someone planning to investigate this topic, their views will be way more detailed because of what they have already read

Within 2 weeks from now, I will be releasing a new self-study course which will be all about planning and conducting qualitative interviews. In that course, I will also share my interview guide (I cannot share any documents on RU-vid). If you are interested, please follow me on Facebook for updates, or register (for free) on my website at www.drkriukow.com

Hi Dr Kriukow, thanks for this helpful video, and one question, for a one hour interview, apart from the intro and closure, how many questions on average should the interview guide include? (if I have one main research question), thanks!
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 3 года назад
there is no average. Everything will depend on the researcher. Also, how can you say that it will be a one hour interview, if you don't have interview questions? This also does not make sense. You can have 3 open ended questions and good interviewees who will talk about these questions for 1 hour, but you can have 20 questions and you interviewees will answer them in 20 minutes. there is no rule for this

thank you for this video.. I am still working out with my qualitative study need more time and help.. is it necessary to have a 30minute interviewed to your participant?
@qualitativeresearcher

I does not have to be 30 minutes, it can be longer or shorter. As long as you manage to ask everything that you want to ask your participants

Thank you for the video, I just wanted to know what to do in case that the interviewee goes out of the subject?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 5 лет назад
Hi, this depends. If it goes completely out of hand, you may always gently remind the interviewee about that. What I usually do is just try to gently come back to the original topic, without directly telling them that they are off topic (I am concerned that this may discourage them and make them feel that what they wanted to share is not interesting/relevant). So I listen to what they have to say, and then I say something like "ok, what I want to discuss now is...". Usually I try to intervene as little as possible, if they are discussing something that I know is not relevant at all, I just bare in mind that I probably won't transcribe and analyse this part, but I still want them to share it because above all I want them to feel that they are contributing and I want them to feel at ease. Of course, sometimes you cannot afford to do this, for example because of time constraints (you know that your interviewee starts work in 15 minutes and if you do not interrupt, you will not manage to collect any of the data you were hoping for), in this case I would probably tell them that we need to discuss a slightly different topic now. It's all a matter of having a good rapport (you may want to watch the following video for this), if the atmosphere is good and relaxed, it is also easier to say such things
