It's brilliant how Homer continues to speak in third-person, but his subconcious mind frequently remembers that he's the singer and creative force of The Residents and he answers the questions directly as the leader of the band! He'll never 'out' the identities of The Residents because he no longer needs to - it's enough for the fans that we are in awe of his genius and continuing belief in this most beguiling and entertaining avant-garde masterpiece that he's still painting! =:^)

"CD ROMS" I Love how humble Homer is and how in a world where everyone wants to be famous, these cats played covertly; literally in the dark. And although their music always creeped me out, I admire their artistic ability, creativity, humility, longevity and most of all, getting their audiences to both think AND feel.

I love The Residents. It's an artistic concept and expressive force regardless of who's behind it. I've never desired to learn true identities or any of that nonsense. The works tell listeners everything they need to know through experiencing them in their full glory. Music should be fun, weird, irreverent, artistic, occasionally dissonant, and always true to itself.

Sorry. I'm just so frustrated with people feeling the need to call out their theories on the names of people in the band. The names don't matter. The identities don't matter. The creative output does. I don't understand why there are so many commenters who feel the need to spoil the ethos of the band. They want to be anonymous. Why call out who is who in the band?

@MakeWeirdMusic
@MakeWeirdMusic 4 года назад
Very true. That's the whole point of the "weird" in "make weird music." Everyone is unique and has their own way of expressing creativity. If we try to look/sound like someone else, we're dismissing our own creative energy. I'm all about promoting people who uniquely express their unique selves, no matter the genre or whether their music sounds "normal."

I really appreciate Homer's world view. The Residents came to be because they did whatever they wanted without thinking if it would work. They made Vileness Fats not realizing it wouldn't turn out how they wanted. They toured with a giant stage show that was a headache and nearly broke the group, but they did it because they wanted to. So inspiring

@nmnmnm9509 4 года назад
It's the hardest thing in art. the first (and maybe the last) law in art must be that you should love the works that you make or the process of creation of them, not fame or money or prestige as a artist and like that. You can see they have made more than 50 albums (almost every year at least one new work). they have made a collective identity just like a religious group, i wish they continue their works with new artists forever and ever because other musicans can be the residents of this great band.

@@MakeWeirdMusic I just realised it's actually "make weird music" not "make music weird" sorry about that! But my point stands. I'm glad we have someone out there keeping up the good fight for weird, odd and indefinable musical experiences. Have you ever thought about talking to They Might Be Giants? I've always loved them and feel they don't get their due as weird music because people shove them in with "college rock" or "Alternative" when they have songs showing clear debt to The Residents (Boat of Car springs to mind) and songs with obscure meanings that confound and put off most mainstream listeners (like 99% of their songs are upbeat ditties about death and misery) and I've always felt like the weird music world never have them their due for being unique artists who never strayed from their own personal furrow when it came to art. Also it seems RU-vid unsubscribed me. So let me sub *again*. Love the interviews and everything you do with them. Any plans to have a go at interviewing Jandek? He's been granting a few isolated interviews lately.

Gosh, what a fantastic interview! You asked a question and allowed Mr. Flynn to expound on the artistic principles he`s been involved with for all these years. No "gotchca" questions of any sort (there is something to be said for respecting mystery and mystique, just like with magicians). You listened and came up with some very thought-provoking questions which really made him think as to how to respond. I love his reply to your 'creativity' question where he said that we are essentially vessels through which life passes. There is depth to that response. Finally, I really smiled and chuckled after you thanked him for the interview where, he said--in a fast patter--"Yeah...yeah yeah yeah." I thought fondly of the same "Yeah...yeah yeah yeah." in the Elvis interview with his dummies in the stage show "Cube E." But....I still enjoy the mystery. ; > ))

(from The Residents Wikipedia "talk" page): "The Residents" are not a real band. Hardy Fox (in character as Chuck Bobuck) admitted as much in an interview[1]. They are a fictional construct, in the same way Goofy or Donald Duck are fictional; their records, the art & advertisement/copy/press releases surrounding the records, the performers hired to portray them (even if said performers are also the creators, they are still "performers," in this case hiring themselves), should be approached similarly, and by taking this knowledge into account I feel this Wiki article may be vastly improved, exiting the realm of band-mythology and attempting to approach "reality" (a rather difficult and contentious notion in and of itself, as The Residents' mythology was manufactured [I think] to point out). Walt Disney voice acting Mickey Mouse does not mean Walt Disney IS Mickey Mouse; hence Homer Flynn providing most of the voice(s) of "The Residents" on records (esp. after 1977), creating "their" lyrics, etc. does NOT mean he IS a Resident, because "The Residents" are an entirely fictional construct. Similarly, Hardy Fox coming out as "composer for The Residents" is no different than the fact that Mark Mothersbaugh was composer for "Rugrats" -- the key difference is that "The Residents" declined to credit individual contributors and purposefully sought to blur the line between fact & the media-manufactured fiction to which audiences had become accustomed via television, radio, merchandise (inc. LP's, singles, etc.), etc., whereas most productions credit all individuals clearly & decline to play such media games. Interestingly, the guy wearing the Donald Duck costume at Disney World has been instructed to never disclose the fact that he "is" Donald Duck. He's told to tell friends/relatives/etc that he is "friends" with this aforementioned fictional icon. Very similar to "The Residents," which are a production of The Cryptic Corporation. The goal, I think, of Homer Flynn, Hardy Fox, & the others involved in manufacturing "The Residents," was to intentionally blur the lines between fact and pop-culture mythology, as a sort of commentary on the relationship between art & business (called "Siamese twins" by Homer Flynn, in a lecture from the early '90's -- a reference to "God in Three Persons") and the audience which consumes its products. We now live in an era where music and artist images are manufactured to market towards specific preexisting, risk-free demographics, readymade and pretending to "realness," when in actuality fictional & prefabricated. The "Pre-fab Four" were a clever commentary on this trend, already emergent in the early '70's when "The Residents" were first dreamed up. Press material is drawn up to be repeated by a vast network of online "influencers," which together generate the illusion of popularity and relevance to the consumer base; similarly (and in a much more crude, DIY, and relatively primitive/low-budget/tongue-in-cheek fashion), the creators of "The Residents" frequently wrote mythologized articles and reviews under false names to create the illusion that "The Residents" were real and worthy of attention (see: liner notes of "Third Reich n' Roll" release from 2011, review of MtR by "Harvey Sox" found on "The Residents 1972-1982" Facebook page, etc). A very interesting project. [1] www.oregonmusicnews.com/charles-bobuck-hardy-fox-residents-interview -- "The Residents concept is completely malleable. It doesn't have to be associated with music. It could become an iPhone app design company. That is the remarkable aspect that sets the Residents apart from 'bands.'" Please note that both "Will Rothers" and "Charles Bobuck" are pseudonyms of Hardy Fox, who -- in this press release masquerading as an interview -- is "interviewing" himself. Since the very beginning of "The Residents" concept, this sort of manufactured, misleading media game-playing has been utilized to playfully (?) whet interest in this essentially fictional "band" amongst Cryptic's intended demographic.

It’s really difficult to talk about a collective/group of artists creating new or different kind of art. Some art expressions are always demonized and also are the followers, people who feel attracted to this type of art, they usually are seen as elitists because what they like or feel attracted to is different to what masses follow. That’s what happens with The Residents. When I first knew about them around 1985-86 all the people I used to hang with, were like amazed or horrified to put it in more exact words. The problem as I see it, is that there is a lot of garbage in art, whether is it music, painting, architecture or you mention it. There have always been such garbage and of course has lots of followers, people who are interested on the “now” music o something that is the moment’s fashion. And in the other hand there are art expressions like The Residents that you cannot encapsulate on a specific period of time. One time back in the 80’s I was at a friend’s, and we were listening to The Resident’s Fingerprince, when suddenly another friend of us arrived and ask us “what are you guys listening, is that Stravinsky?” so, that sort of give you the timeless of their music it can be. Very clever interview and thank you for sharing it. Regards

Well, it really depends on how we define garbage. Some artistic folk i know who think Zappa is the cat's pajamas will then turn around and say John Lennon and The Beatles were trash intended for weak-minded people, even though the fact is that despite their music being perhaps more "Normal" and less fringe than Zappa or the residents, they never INTENDED to be generic and only BECAME mainstream because people followed their sound. They were just as eager to be pioneers as the residents were. Why then should they be considered garbage just because those songs became culturally accepted? I think it's that kind of attitude that makes fans of fringe artists get labeled elitist. It's not that they can't like what they like. It's that they see anything that goes mainstream as "Overated" When in fact the very reason they went mainstream because they pushed music forward in the first place. "Rain" gave us the first hit record with backwards music. "Helter Skelter" is seen by many as the genesis of heavy metal. "I Am The Walrus" may as well be a Residents song in itself, as can be "Revolution #9". I track which the mainstream LOATHS to this day but John Lennon maintained was a great work. In short, art shouldn't be disqualified as art if it's widely enjoyed or understood. You don't have to be The Residents to make it, nor as popular as The Beatles. It's about having a connection with your audience.

In the documentary they make a point of talking about how well the band melded business and art... yet the official story is that the cryptic corporation were friends of the band who essentially did them a favor by doing all their business dealings. Hmmm. I think that the singing resident who appears onstage in the documentary is slightly more disheveled, and the other corporation members maybe came in and out of the group , musically speaking, yet stayed on the financial side of things. This is why they put so fine a point on how the residents is not so much a band as the label of an ongoing project with many members.

Is Homer Flynn the artist behind visions such as the animated face in the video for LOVE LEAKS OUT? That is completely nightmarish. Or FINGERTIPS? An various malformed faces popping up, with brains spilling out, and such. Thank God The Residents were never traumatized enough to stall in their creativity. In later years I think the art has become richer and more evolved, like the cover for ANIMAL LOVER. I guess that artists are always their own harshest critics. But The Residents always flowed continuously in their creative output, with one album following another. And big ambitious projects. I mean all the costumes, masks, and stage setups, complex choreography, planning and realizing tours. So much work, making it all come together. Then again, it's a long period spanning several decades, and I can't see what creative frustrations there may have been in-between in the process. Good how Homer emphasizes encouragement of personal unhampered expression. He is spiritual too. Social (and monetary) pressure does a lot of damage to would be artists. The truly daring are few. And I see how he wishes more would let go.

@MakeWeirdMusic

+Steven LeBeau the thing is, who would that satisfy or appease? Why should anyone admit to any involvement in the group? They're artists with utmost integrity. Did you watch the movie The Prestige?
@stevenlebeau
@stevenlebeau 8 лет назад
Who would that satisfy or appease? Honestly, probably nobody. But after a while, it gets tiring to hear him talk about the Residents' output as if he's not one of the driving forces of the band. It's intellectually dishonest, (not to mention pretentious), for Homer to talk about The Residents' work as if it isn't largely *his* work, an out-and-out lie, in fact. Saying, "They" did this, or "they" did that... In fact, there are several parts of this interview where it seems like you have to walk on eggshells just to keep up the pretense, even going out of your way to clarify your question about how Homer's art has changed over the years, clarifying, "You know, as you worked alongside the Residents." I understand your comment about The Prestige, but it's misguided. Homer and Hardy have been almost completely honest about their artistic processes, how they use recording technology, etc, but with a patina of dishonesty that rings hollow. Honestly, I love the idea of an anonymous band, but they kind of blew it. I mean, if they had actually set up Cryptic with four actual non-members of the band, I wouldn't even take issue, but on some level it seems like Homer and the others wanted to have their anonymous cake and eat it in public, too.
@MakeWeirdMusic
@MakeWeirdMusic 8 лет назад
+Steven LeBeau yeah, I get where you're coming from. As someone who runs a website about mostly-not-popular music, and as someone who has worked in the industry close enough to know the struggles artists face, I have nothing but respect for Homer and crew. I cannot imagine trying to keep artistic integrity over several decades as everything about music production, marketing, revenue, tastes, etc. have so drastically changed. These guys are heroes who have chosen a path they had no idea would lead anywhere 40-some years ago. It's easy for us to comment on a website about how it's turned out, but these guys have probably hit rock bottom more than any of us ever will. Financially, artistically, relationally, maritally... It's comprehensive impact. Perhaps I give them too much credit, but there's no one else out there to compare them to. In my mind, they're living legends and we will never see anything like them in our lifetimes. So, I give them a break and want to play by whatever rules I can to encourage meaningful creative conversation. To do what they do takes tenacity and they probably made decisions over the decades having no understanding of the future impacts. Cryptic was probably born out of necessity. I can tell you personally as a dude who runs a website that's already more popular than I ever hoped that I have made mistakes and decisions that I will have to undo, and my work is far more trivial than that of The Residents. So, all that to say: I get it, but I see no cause for resentment. There's no play book on how to do what they did. I bet they'd do things differently if they knew better, but we have the gift of their work. And they're people. It probably takes a special set of personalities to make the thing last half as long as it has.
@stevenlebeau
@stevenlebeau 8 лет назад
+Make Weird Music that's totally fair. I've been a fan (mostly of the stuff up to God in Three Persons) for a long time now, and I really do love what they do. By the way, great interviews!
