Rebels of a Neon God (青少年哪吒) tells the story of Hsiao Kang (played by Li Kangsheng 李康生), a loner who inhabits the gritty streets of early 1990s Taipei. The rebelliousness that permeated Li Kangsheng’s generation in Taiwan is a key theme of the film. Li Kangsheng brings an authenticity to the role, drawing on his own life experience, which in turn helped to inspire the final form of the movie. In this interview, recorded at the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University by James Walsh, Linda Jaivin talks to director Tsai Ming Liang 蔡明亮 about the making of this landmark film.
Rebels of the Neon God will be screened on campus at the Taiwan Film Festival in March 2015. Information about the festival can be found at: ciw.anu.edu.au/...
