Just finished watching the film. I am glad I clicked on this review/analysis. I hope to revisit this again in the future.. So enlightening. I love the feel this movie gave me. And makes me miss it, miss the life then, neon lights, motorcycles, rain. It's a universal experience in some way. Truly one of the best gifts in life, -that it offers.. you just simply have to live.
This is a great review gentlemen. I am in love with this movie, and Taiwanese New Wave cinema in general. I'm finding it to be almost impressionistic in the way it captures the feeling of the city , life as a whole in the city, and on the level of individuals, the anxiety all of this urbanization and rapid social and economic change provokes. And that's what I mean by impressionistic. I leave these films with an overwhelmingly strong sense of a feeling or vibe of what this phenomenon was on the level of the individual and society as a whole, but it's not in such a direct and concrete way. It feels more like some collage of images, feelings and emotions swirling around in my mind. It's a vibe. And it so beautifully captured by these films, unlike any other movies from other eras I have seen. In the vein of what I have just described, I also highly recommend Edward Yang's early work, particularly Taipei Story and The Terrorizers.

I just finished watching this movie and couldn’t help but see many parallels to the Korean film “Paradise”. Urban alienation, coming of age, father-son relations, working class life, petty crime, rain and flooded apartments, the stylized cinematography. I wonder if Bong Joon-Ho ever acknowledged any influence from this film.

Hi there! This one is a great movie, thanks very much for your interesting review. Not sure if you guys have seen or reviewed this one, but I just watched “Vive L’Amour” and even when these two films are two years apart, I found quite interesting the fact the characters and even some parts of the story are similar. In the cast, again Lee Kang-sheng and Chen Chao-jung. I haven’t seen much more movies from Tsai Ming-liang apart from these two and The Wayward Cloud, but is Lee Kang-sheng always there as Hsiao-kang??? Thanks for your excellent reviews, I have to admit I have started to love Taiwanese Cinema thanks to you guys. Cheers!

It is streaming on Amazon Prime, also it might be possible to find on some of the more arty services like Kanopy which is free with a library card but I'm not sure.
