It even made headlines here, on the other side of the channel. Tony Appleton had appeared on television screens around the world as the man who popped up at the hospital in London where prince George (whose name was not yet known at the time this footage was broadcast) had just been born.
Satellites beamed the iamges of an elderly man in a carnaval costume to millions of homes. Today, three days later, it has become clear Appleton had not been invited to do this - somehow everyone had assumed he had. Something of a security leak, there. Watch this interview on the BBC News channel, shown minutes after Appleton had made his announcement. You have to admit he never claims he'd been asked to do this, and he seems an amiable man, so cheers to him.
Shown by the BBC on 22.7.2013.
