Please turn on English Subtitles added by Me! Olympic & World Champion Aliya Mustafina, now Head of the Junior National Teams speak about the gymnasts competing at the 2023 Russian Cup.
Something I have always admired about Aliya is how polished and well-thought she is in her interview responses. She's very professional and mature even when she was interviewed as a young gymnast and now as a national coach. So good to see her still making an impact in the sport even though I miss her onodis and helicopter DTYs.
@@You-dh1du she DID have the best onodis. I think her best beam set was 2011 American cup. It wasn’t a flawless set but her movements were so signature to her. She is one of the best
Many people talking a lot about her obvious weight gain. But, come on, it’s probably very hard to adapt to the change of food restriction plus 8 hours exercising everyday for many years to suddenly not having to do any of that. It’s so common for gymnasts to gain weight right after retirement, but eventually they go back to a more “regular” body appearance. An exemplo of this is Carly Patterson. She put on many kilos after Athens, but nowadays she is skinny and fit again I believe Aliya will be fine
I agree. When you transition from elite sports and don't spend the same time in the gym that you used to, you gain weight. On top of that, gymnasts are usually short so they have lower caloric needs then taller people. Most people have never been capable of doing with their bodies what she did and so what if she has different priorities now? She put her energy wherever she feel it needs to be placed.
Exactly. She is getting used to a brand new way of living. No more extensive training, changes in appetite, and that is combined with her having a baby which, on its own, can cause extreme changes to the body. She will be fine. And even if she decides to stay at this weight that’s fine too, as long as her doctors find her to be healthy and she feels comfortable.
The comments on this video are so cruel. You people aren't convincing ANYONE with your "concern" trolling. How dare you comment on her body? Women do not exist for you to look at. This is a woman who spent YEARS being called fat by Rodionenko. Every close observer of gymnastics knows this. She spent her entire career after 2010 under scrutiny for her weight, always being judged. And now you come to the comments to do the same. Shame on you all. Aliya Mustafina is 100x the person any of you are, and nothing will ever change that. Be better.
Rodionenko called her “fat?” I never liked Rodionenko! She’s always making vicious comments and has such terrible sportsmanship. Even when Russia won in 2021 at the Olympics, she didn’t bother to come by and tell the Americans, “Good game.” The Russian team hugged the American women, but Rodionenko just stayed off to the side and didn’t acknowledge them at all. Aliya is amazing and will be remembered as one of Russia’s best gymnasts of all time.
As so many comments here prove, there are quite a few people that still cling to the fallacies that: A) one cannot possibly be happy (or pretty) if they aren't thin B) one's achievements mean nothing if the person gains weight afterwards and the biggest fallacy of them all: That it's ANYONE'S place to point out another person's weight fluctuation, because doing so is going to "motivate" that person to change, (regardless that they may actually be content with their life EXACTLY as it is!) The truth is, that it's the people who insist on pointing out and mocking the perceived "flaws" in everyone else, who are the TRULY unhappy ones!
All those starving to death and maintaining a certain weight days are finally over. She's still involved in the sport as a coach and mentor. Another chapter fulfilled i guess.
Reading some of these comments is incredibly sad to me, I’m shocked at what I have read and I send Aliya all the love and support. She is an incredible human being x
People need to stop acting like they’re coming from a caring place of concern for Aliya while commenting on her body. I can promise you that she herself, is aware of her weight. Claiming to be concerned for her physical/mental health while leaving comments like the ones here would only exasperate the problem. I pray she doesn’t see these comments, we have NO idea what she’s been through.
When I watch Chinese coverage, all they talk about is code. Like during a routine, they'll be like "A skill. D skill" and "This gets a 0.3 bonus." It's constantly talking about scoring and super informative. In the US they talk about what the gymnast had for breakfast and how China might want Morgan Hurd back.
Yeah the United States really personalises their footage and focus on the personality/ background of their gymnasts. I think it’s part of their culture and the American dream aspect to it, other countries are more technical.
@@speedofpeeomg I HATED when tim kept bringing that up. Literally everytime Morgan was on the screen, they mentioned China probably wanting her gymnastics or her being adopted. So glad he's not doing commentary anymore
If anybody said gaining weight makes people ugly, then Unstoppable Aliya has proved it wrong. Now a mom, she's living her retirement happily. So happy to see her back on screen. Now that she's single again, hope she finds someone good and settles down.
I think her body had to adjust to a less active lifestyle, especially since she performed in extreme high level sports ( I had to same when I quit gymnastics, gained like 10 kilos) in combination with her hormonal changes because of pregnancy. She’s beautiful tho, I just hope she’s happy with herself too and realises how beautiful she always been and still is! ♥️
Happy to see her doing well after her athletic career has ended! She was an amazing gymnast! People should not comment on her appearance...it is not relevant to anything important!
I mean, massive weight gain is usually a sign of poor mental health/over eating. To say she’s doing well is wishful thinking but not realistic. Really not coming for her or trying to be rude.. it just doesn’t make sense to turn a blind eye to the obvious. I do hope she gets better if she’s struggling with her mental health.
@@_3a1o can you name any reasons for massive weight gain that aren't negative? I'm pretty sure she's not training to be a body builder so don't tell me she's bulking.

Yes stop that crap. She is now obese and that is not healthy. She is still young and now has a double chin. She was a competitive gymnast just a handful of years ago. This is so so sad. She looks incredibly unhappy. But let’s not normalize obesity.
Why are people commenting on her weight as if she doesn’t know? She exercised 8 hours a day, 6 days a week plus strict diet and she’s given birth. Her body’s going to change, she could also have hormone issues atm. Maybe she’ll lose the weight, maybe she won’t but who cares.
Because she is obese and people rightfully are concerned. Don’t normalize obesity. You think if she would walk into a doctors office they would say she’s healthy. Think again.
She doubled her weight. I hope she’s not drinking and it’s just that she stopped exercising plus she stopped any strict diet she was following before, thus the weight gain…
@@lonelyhorse5313 she Doesn’t look different without her leotard and all that makeup ? Uh huh, I’d have no clue who she was IF that wasn’t mentioned! Nothing wrong with my eyes get a life
Depressione?? Comunque è evidente che non sta bene. Dispiace molto ☹️
I could care less if she gained weight; it's to be expected with a pregnancy. She appears uncomfortable and disheveled, even sad, and I think this is the concerning part.
Depends what you want to know about him ? He is a journalist working for the biggest sports channel in Russia . He is an avid fan of gymnastics and makes a lot of interviews and reports on it. His name is Dmitrii Zanin
@@margaretkinnaman8585 Honestly, Russian domestic gymnastics events have always been pretty empty in terms of spectators even before the whole situation rn.
@@thiagoaugusto3559 cara entendido. Ela é foda, melhor ginasta russa desta geração, e talvez seja saudável. Mas deu diferença dela em 2019, isso deu. Simples assim.
She has stopped training. She has had a child. Let her metabolism get back to normal and don’t shame her. She’s also a single mom. She probably doesn’t have time to find exercises she likes or wants to do if she working to support her child. Go Mustafina
The child has nothing to do with the weight gain. She was thin when she had already the child. It’s the fact that she stopped training while probably she stopped whatever diet she was also following all those years and started a new diet (diet meaning what we eat which is what a diet is). So she gained weight.
Wait is that her? She lookssss umm😅 you know there was something happening with restrictions to eating and what not before because now that she’s not competing she looks completely different.
Sorry in advance to be so critical here, but I’m really taken back by Mustafina’s appearance. Shocked really. It saddens me a bit as she looks very overweight and not healthy. Not at all what I expected as it wasn’t long ago since she last competed and then stayed in the sport to coach. She seems lost to me and a bit unhappy. I hope I’m wrong.
I was equally taken back by her state, it's a concern of well being not a criticism. She seems uncomfortable in her own skin, not the Mustafina I'm used to seeing
I have to agree. A lot of people were affected by Covid and she does work a lot and has a daughter, maybe she was a bit depressed during the pandemic and now a bit overworked. I hope she is happy. I think it’s just a bit shocking because Aliya is one of the most mentally tough gymnasts we’ve ever seen and is very matter of fact about the drive to succeed. I would expect her to have the fight to lose the weight after she pulls herself out of whatever she may have been going through…
It might be for a variety of reason. Health isues, lack of time or simply the fact that after a decade in elite gymnastics your body is accustomed to a certain grind. If you don’t get the same training you gain weight, You have no right to judge or even to bring up the topic. We should all be happy that’s she’s back. So feel free to delete your small minded comment.
@@user-LuGymnastics Why? It’s out of concern. This is not her normal. If she is happy great but it’s still a valid observation and nothing more. She looks nothing like her old self and if you are going to say she does, than I have concerns about your comment.
