In this special edition of #thedailydoug, I'm speaking with Trevor Rabin. He's a giant in the musical world...multi-instrumentalist, Grammy winner, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Film Composer, former member of Yes...the list goes on and on. He is releasing TOMORROW his brand new album RIO, his first vocal rock album since 1989. First, listen to us discuss the new album as well as hear stories of his arrival as a member of Yes. Then, listen along with me to his new single, Oklahoma, a touching, powerful, and beautiful song about the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. I hope you enjoy!

Trevor is a top level musician, composer, singer. joining Yes in the 80s was a tremendous streak of luck for both.

If Trevor goes on tour, I hope he will play "Endless Dream" from Talk. It's one of the most overlooked and underrated Yes songs. (And I say that as someone who's more of a 1970s Yes fan.)

@@richboshart1201 I am surprised to see the love for Talk. I got it from the cutout bin over 20 years ago, never got into it, and got rid of it. I've since streamed it, but it still hasn't stuck.

Trevor is the reason why I got into Yes music when I was a kid and the reason why I am the most hated Yes fan in ortodox Yes forums and groups. Trevor is perhaps the real architect of the modern progresive rock sound, a truly gifted musician.

Progressive music fans can be odd. Not everyone likes it, but progressive bands by definition need to... progress. Yes always moved onwards and in my view Trevor Rabin was such a perfect fit for that stage of their evolution- able to compose, sing, shred, domainte a track and sit at the back supporting all in the same song. I appreciate Yes in all its incarnations- early, mid, late. I couldn't choose a favourite, but even Trevor Horn and the Drama era were amazing.

Great interview Doug. One of your USPs is that you are a classically trained/educated composer, interviewing other classically trained composers who have found a pathway into another elaborate form of popular music. Those conversations of a common origin and parallel journeys are quite captivating. You should try to get an interview with Rick Wakeman on that basis. Rick always has multiple projects on the go and has a wealth of really unique entertaining stories. You’ve just spoke with one of his mates here, who I’m sure will give you his blessing.

Great Interview! Trevor should do more interviews with you. It was great to hear his stories & you had good chemistry. I'd love it if Trevor did a 2nd album in the epic orchestral style of Oklahoma where he mixed his movie expertise with song and emotion. Just love his slide guitar sounds also. The song "Fragile" he did with ARW was the best "Yes" song to come out in years. I was so bummed when they didn't do a full album together. Just love this new song Oklahoma.

Great interview with Trevor - I definitely learned a few things about him. What a great guy! And what an emotional time to live through - I was in grad school when the bombing happened. I wrote a short piece of music for a sound synthesis class that I was in at the time and dedicated it to the victims of the bombing. During the time it was played, it started raining and became very windy. I'll never forget it. Ever.

I'm a fan of his work and know he's pretty prolific with his output in unexpected places (lol), but I hadn't realised that the new album was his first solo led album since "Can't Look Away" (I've been enjoying your Dream Theater album reviews and IMHO this album is an absolute must for you to have a look at).

Doug - love the channel ! Great interview with Trevor Rabin - what a nice guy - and in my opinion one of the most talented people EVER in prog rock ( I know this is blasphemous to "classic" Yes fans - but the albums he did with Yes are my favorites - still in heavy rotation on my listening list). As a Canadian - I have a suggestion for your progressive listening enjoyment - Not sure if you have ever heard of Saga ? Truely amazing and underrated prog rock band from Canada ( they actually have a huge cult following in Germany for some reason ?! ) - They have an impressive catalogue ( IMHO their first 4 albums are all brilliant ! ) - but I would suggest a good place to start is with their 1978 eponymous debut album "Saga" - and for their better known hits - the 2021 "The Best of Saga" - cheers!

"Oklahoma" isn't a sing along. It's about 168 people (including 19 children) who died in Oklahoma City in 1995. the significance of 9:01? reference to 90125? or is it the minute before the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing? interesting coincidence. 9:03 being the minute after. the blocks remind me of Kubrick's obelisks in Space Odyssey. the sad thing is the US does not seem to be learning from the issues related to the Federal Building and ideology behind it.
