When Julie Christopher from HarperCollins Children's Books contacted me to videotape an interview with Beverly Cleary I was thrilled. After all, she was my favorite author as a child. Now 35 years later her work is on the NEA's Top 100 favorite Children's Books for Teachers and Children.
Her editor Barbara Lalicki conducted the interview in Ms. Cleary's Carmel home. April 12, 2006 her 90th birthday is Drop Everything and Read Day or DEAR. We hope everyone does just that!

I grew up with the Henry Huggins books. They were all great! Mrs. Cleary is certainly sharp as a tack at 90!

My mom got me to like reading by having me read Ramona the Pest. Beverly Cleary is an amazing author. She truly understands children. Good job Beverly Cleary👍👍

I named my Bernese Mountain dog Ramona because of her books...aka Ramona the Pest. I JUST found out that she and Ramona share the same birthday--except that Beverly turned 100 yesterday and Ramona turned 7! Would be cool to let her know! Happy Birthday and thanks for all the fantastic characters!!

I love Beverly Cleary! I think her life seems perfect I know it isn't because everyone has their challenges but if I could look back on my life and see what Mrs. Cleary has I'd be pleased.

When I commented that the interviewer had hair like Miranda in Sex and the City, Ms. Cleary was so shocked that I should have watched such a show. Funny you always want to think that your childhood heroes are a little more broad-minded than that. Oh well. I still enjoyed the books.

Ramona did in fact eat a pound of butter in the book Henry and Ribsy, which she was indeed bringing home from the store.

The audio is only on the right channel. If you can't hear it, you likely are listening on a mono speaker.

I discovered her when I was adult, I enjoyed it immensely. As a mom, it opened my eyes to my kid's thoughts and feeling and really reflected how kids interact with each other.
