Studio interview filmed in Ausburg, Germany with three direct survivors and son of a serving officer of the German Light cruiser SMS Emden. The survivors are Petty Officer Hans Hahns (?) age 72, Able Seaman Arthur Werner age 72, Captain Erich Prekenschau (?) and Prince Meinrad of Hohenzollern son of Prince Franz Joseph of Hohnezollern (1891-1964) who was one of the Emden's serving officers (Prince Franz Joseph had died a few weeks before the interview was filmed). The interview was conducted in English and concerns the parts played by the interviewees in the naval battle with the cruiser HMAS Sydney at Cocos Island on 9 November 1914.

A true story of adventure, human endurance and courage, bravery and sacrifice. Their bravery did not go in vain. even after 100 years, this story lives on in books, TV series, RU-vid videos.

The Enden story is truly incredible. There's a book called "The Last Cruise of the Emden" which is truly astonishing. Survivors of the Emden made it all the way to the Middle East and travelled to Ottoman lines, from the Cocos! One of the Emden officers, Lauterbach, also has a book called. "Lauterbach of the China Sea" which is also incredible. The guy got into a fight with 6 British destroyers and survived, among many other adventures.

Years ago, I read ''The Last Gentleman-Of-War: The Raider Exploits of the Cruiser Emden'' and was quite moved by the chivalry of the Commanding Officer of the Emdem, Cmdr Mueller. A story of courage and honour. I have never forgotten that book nor the exploits it details. I had no idea this interview existed and it was a pleasure to watch. Thank you for posting this.

several years ago I read 'The Keiser's Raider', which is the full memoirs of 1st Lieutenant Helmuth Von Mucke, I recommend it any day, he has a good banterish humour towards the English not all too unfamiliar the other way. Unbelievable story, I love the Emden and so happy to have found this interview just now.
