Interview with Joaquin DeLuz

I had the pleasure of spending 15 years of my career with this amazing guy at New York City Ballet. He is now the director of Compañía Nacional de Danza in Madrid, Spain. It is not often you spend the majority of your career with one person, not often they are a world-class technician, and not often you get to interview them after it is all said and done.
Listen in to hear how many miles he is clocking on his terrace in Madrid during this quarantine, what he chased me around SPAC with years ago, and who was the stressball during our partnership together. Enjoy!!!

It is such a joy to see you speaking to all these fine dancers, and charming people. I had a major laugh when Joaquin De Luz described the scene of having his audition at SAB , for NYCB, and Mischa, who was to teach the class +Peter Martins, Jerry Robbins and Eddie Vilella were all sitting there. What a moment! Thanks so much Megan for your own highly skilled interview skills as well as speaking about your own experiences. I have been a dancer and a follower of dance for many decades, originally training with Thalia Mara, Arthur Mahoney and Yurek Lazowski at Ballet Repertoire, in the 50's and 60's...the passion has never left me. I went to NYCB so often in the 60's that I knew the repertoire at that time, step for step, in many cases. I LOVE your interviews. So many of the dancers I saw on stage went on to become ballet masters and representatives of the Ballanchine Trust, staging his ballets all over the world. What a wonderful legacy and tradition. Carry on!

I heard a story once about Sylvie Guillem. She just wasn’t hitting her balance or fouetté or something. Apparently she shrugged her shoulders and said “Demain ( tomorrow).” 🙂

Wondering if you are related to Mr. Frank Ricca? He was involved with Thalia Mara and Arthur Mahoney at their School for Ballet Repertory..W. 54 St, in 1950's, 60's, 70's. I knew him as a child, there.

Megan, you are so good at this! And I wish I had been born in Spain. I had an exchange student back when I was in middle school who was from Madrid and I love that country so much. I'm half Italian, half French, but wish to be Spanish! Anyway, this was one of the best interviews I've seen! Keep doing them please!!! Love!!

Is the painful slaughter of an innocent animal funny Joaquin and Meghan? The bull is starved for weeks and enclosed. When the bull is finally let out into the arena the bull thinks that he has finally been set free and that his hunger and isolation is over only to get a very crude awakening. The bull finds himself trapped yet again. The bull has to endure a slow, tortuous, death from stabbing. One bull is cornered by men on mules and a matador. The machismo bullfighter is mascarading as a brave victor but it is a very pathetic thing. If a matador is so brave and courageous, why doesn't he go into the ring by himself unarmed and battle the bull? What a sad commentary that so much of the macho patriarchy of the world renders a perception that it is a big giant act of courageness for a matador to savage a bull and come out as the "victor" when the bull collapses in agony and is bleeding to death in his own blood as the matador arrogantly pumps up his chest for his brave "victory". A "victory" achieved by stabbing a bull dozens and dozens of times to declare the matador's "superiority" over a weak, savaged, dying animal. Bull fighting is archaic. It should be done with and chuckling about it so casually I find offensive. All matadors need to end bullfighting and use their artistry and skill to learn a new trade: ballet or other forms of the dance. Matadors should become dancers. That would take courage.
