Transcript of the interview below.
John Finnemore is the star and writer of the popular radio shows Cabin Pressure and John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme. We’re here in Italy for the EuroAirDotCon convention to talk to him.
M - John, nice to meet you, how are you?
J - Very well, thank you, how are you?
M - Very well, thank you very much. Let’s start with Cabin Pressure; the series is coming to an end with Zurich; is it over for good or might we see more of it in the future?
J - No that is the end of the story, Zurich is where it all finishes.
M - Are you happy with the ending?
J - Yes I am. Of course I’m waiting to see what the audience will think of it but I think it’s the best ending that - it’s the ending I wanted to write.
M - Christen from the UK would like to know - do you have an all-time favorite episode?
J - No I don’t have one all-time favorite, they tend to change around. At the moment I’m very fond of St. Petersburg and also I was looking at Wokingham the other day and there’s lots I like about Wokingham. But it changes from day to day.
M - Court Marchetti from America would like to know - you have a lot of fans around the world, would you like to perform in another country?
J - Yes, by all means. But that would take quite a lot of organization but yes if you’d like to set up a tour for me then I’d be happy to do so.
M - Leslie from Germany would like to know - have you ever wanted to go into another genre besides comedy?
J - Yes, I’ve written some straight plays about ten years ago and I would quite like to do something like that again.
M - Something more serious?
J - Yeah. Or with a different type of narrative because with sitcom you have to bring everything back to the point it started so each episode can be... each episode can be in a self-contained way. And that’s a challenge and fun to do but I would quite like to write something where the characters don’t necessarily have to end up at the same place it started.
M - Maybe go into horror?
J - No I’ve never really been that attracted by horror. But something else.
M - Krystal from the UK asks - what do you have planned for the future?
J - Well we are hoping to do a series on radio 4 next year which will be with David Tyler and Pozzitive as a producer again, in which we will present six standalone half hour comedy plays. So that’s the next thing to work on. Oh and we have a new series of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme of course, which we’re recording at the moment and that will go out in the autumn starting in October.
M - And finally; looking back, what’s your favorite Cabin Pressure memory?
J - I think it’s probably, it’s the one that occurs to me at the moment, is in Wokingham when the character of Martin’s brother picks Martin up and whirls him round and we hadn’t expected the actor Justin Edwards, who is about five or six inches taller than Benedict (Cumberbatch) to actually pick him up and whirl him round but he did and that was a very fun day.
M - Thank you very much.
J - My pleasure.
