George Harrison took the reaction to John’s comment in stride by saying “they had to buy our records to burn them”, meaning at least they still made money.
Julia is such an amazing sweetheart. I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to meet her and have her autograph her book "Imagine This" in her presence. She is so down to Earth and sociable.
@@Robin-lh9wr She sure was more comfortable. It was difficult for her to talk about all this for a long time. She couldn't even bear listening to a Beatles song, especially one with John's lead vocals.
I'm glad to see John's half sister she seems nice and my comment also is I didn't know interviewers ask so many personal questions now I can dig where The Beatles are coming from about interviewers
what an intelligent, insightful, wise, decent, articulate, self possessed person…and a bit of John’s fire when the interviewer offered that a couple of well known filmmakers felt that Magical Mystery Tour was one of the best films ever made… “who are they to say so?, and you’ve fallen for it”….brilliant
@@allymayful well, while I can’t speak for Julia, I would say it is because as she says in interviews, she just knew John as john, her brother. And it was the rest of the world that went crazy over them, and adored everything they did. I include myself in this, I/we would be happy to even have a film of them sitting on a bench staring at the wall… And while magical mystery tour features these four guys and their music that we love so much, it is hardly “one of the best films ever made”…. so as John‘s sister, she probably shares Johns feelings of “we’re just a band, who made it very, very big, thats all” take on the Beatles. She’s obviously a bit cultured as well, so she bristles a bit when people place unrealistic praise, or inappropriate praise on a song, film or any project that they may have done, just because we have this great love for them and their work. we could say; “I really love magical mystery tour because it has the Beatles and their music in it”….. but we wouldn’t necessarily have to say it’s “one of the best films ever made” … not saying that, wouldn’t have to take away from our appreciation of the film, we can still love it just as much because it’s them… It doesn’t detract from their value to not hail that movie as one of the greatest piece of art ever.
@@skipskiperton4992 l don’t think the producers said it was the best film. They valued it as a new concept in film making, that they enjoyed studying at University, or in their youth. I love listening to her too. A lovely, down to earth, intelligent lady, who l would have imagined having a valuable friendship with John.
First of all, MMT was very Avant-Garde type & not meant to be conventional in the first place. It’s a made for TV musical film, not a motion picture. Listed as comedy/surreal humor. Paul called MMT a success failure when interviewed by David Frost in 1967, also stating, he quite liked it, admitting it was “bitty” but was supposed to be like that but people were looking for a plot but there wasn’t one. What McCartney has since said about MMT if he was indeed ever asked, I’ve not read anything about that. McCartney conceived of the film & has been credited with leading the project. Now it has a cult following because it was The Beatles featured in the film along w/of course providing a Beatle music soundtrack
I was at Candlestick Park in 1966, and they did sing. The technology was not developed enough to allow the amps/ guitars/ voices to drown out the screaming.
They played on something like 30 W amps. The big groups in US had monster equipment of several hundred watts for each instrument. In that way she is kind of right, they thought they are still in the Cavern.
I must say, I could listen to Julia all day long, what a wonderful and lovely lady. And to hear about The Beatles, from her perspective is absolute gold. Thanks so much for uploading this tremendous interview and allowing us to see her side as John's sister.
what a great interview!! I love that she thinks so much of John's lyrics being stories of his life - particularly his solo songs. They are all stories!! How many people actually listen to those amazing lyrics as deeply as Julia and myself have. Every time I hear John's songs and listen to the "stories" I shake my head in awe. How can anyone turn their life into poetry? He was a genius poet!
An excellent interview. Julia projected many thoughts of what it was really like and may have been like. An inside perspective of John and Beatles soul.
Amazing interview.. so insightful.. I was born in 1973.. discovered the Beatles around 1984 or 85 Abouts.. I had 45s of Twist and Shout, Please Please Me, I should have known better, there’s a place.. I was about 12 or 13 years old or so. My parents had a box of 8-tracks and I would sit on the floor with these gigantic headphones on and listen to Magical Mystery Tour and take note of how the train world go from one side to the other and just stare at the bazar cover. My friends mom down the street gave me the White album record a few years later and I would set the speakers up on my desk and put my head in between the speakers and sing “Across the Universe.” And “Julia” totally immersed..
Just heard the new song “Now and Then” it’s a Beautiful and emotional track. I plan go visit Liverpool next year on my birthday to fulfill a child hood dream
Pretty girl. Lots to say, but in a good spirit. I hope she had a good life and a great marriage like I did until my spouse passed. I hope she is happy and her kids bring her joy. God Bless you Julia.
John Lennon turned out to be more musical than we thought...He played the guitar, the piano. the mouth organ. If he had lived on he probably would have went on to play keyboard & synth. I couldn't even play the recorder at high school. But was good at writing poetry after i left because i had the time.
(5:38) You cannot mention Lennon, Cohen and Dylan without mentioning Joni Mitchell! She is one of the most extraordinary poet/songwriters of our times.
What a very interesting interview. I hung on to every word. Nice to hear her impressions and memories of Colin, Rod and Cynthia, yet she was rather tight-lipped when Mimi was mentioned. She's an important part of the overall story. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like she didn’t want to say anything negative in regard to Aunt Mimi. John still loved her even though he battled her tooth & nail in rebellion about many things
2:33 Yet there's the best rendition of Yesterday at Candlestick Park here on yt, as well as of Day Tripper. The Beatles did sing, not just opened their respective mouths
I think the Beatles were very weary of too much popularity. That is why John made the Jesus comment. He was just telling the truth. I don't think he wanted to be hated over the comment, just a break. John did promote peace on earth, even though he was a rebel.
Colin never played teachest bass, it was because he had a drum kit that Eric recommended him to John & he joined The Quarry men as their drummer. He did frequently practice at Johns mums house but Ms Baird was but a child at the time & unfortunately her recollections are suspect. As George once said…he who tells all he knows …..often tells more than he knows.😊
She is full of it! I have a confirmed recording of candlestick park, they sang through every song, she didnt know it was their last gig...she is a spoofer! Strawberry fields was started as far back as 1964, she is for the birds!
😮😮 please clean up the hiss and volume of the interviewer... 💭 I had to fight to get a friend to listen to this informative moment, he couldn't get past the interviewer's voice ☺️☺️😂
After the hiss did disappear towards the middle of the interview, the interviewer did not have volume but Julia did so it was impossible to catch everything he was saying & asking
..they don't scream for Paul because he's no longer a teenager and neither is his audience. ..he's nolonger quite such the sex symbol at 75 predominantly❤
Many of McCartney’s fans still consider him a sex symbol. I never did as he’s not my type but I’ve luved The Beatles since 1963. Actually, I’ve never considered any of the Beatles as sex symbols. Wasn’t boy crazy like that w/any male, famous or not. Naturally, a teenager wouldn’t consider any old man a sex symbol. Most of McCartney’s fans are no longer young kids or teenagers either but it’s guaranteed he will fill a venue when he performs in concert & the cheering is sensational!
How could a Man be totally replaced as Lennon still would have existed before, during & after this so-called transition. There have always been rumors that Paul was killed in a vehicular accident & others claim he was murdered but I’m not seeing how a Man can totally be replaced in every shape & form as a result of that
There’s been screaming since Frank Sinatra & most likely before. I do believe it was natural for many-at least monkey see, monkey do as once the screaming started, others will follow suit.
This is all very nice but you will get about as much information you didn't already know off this as one would if they interviewed your mother or brother about you, or Less because She was not a part of John's life even as a child, they never lived together. How much real insight into me for example, could my mother or brother have, almost Zero. "Oh, he was a Cute Baby, ..so chubby, .." 🤗 ..Nothing. I take it all back, she's Wonderful.❤
@@benwright6330 It’s a cult following now & the songs still sell. MMT was not a motion picture-it’s a musical comedy/surreal humor & was meant to be what it is-unconventional without a plot.
I'm confused. John Lennon looked like his father and nothing like his mother. Julia Baird is his half-sister. They share the same mother. And yet, Julia also looks like John's father and nothing like her mother. So WTF is going on here?
could not have someone else with better clarity, pitch and tone of voice conducted this interview, it def sounded like someone was strangling this interviewer ?? could barely make out what he was saying, Julia was very impressive in articulation and rapid speech coherent and intelligent.
@@allymayful Some don’t mind divulging that type of information, others do. Naturally people are curious about anything in regard to the lives of those they liked & admired.
@@revrotunda3206 Yes I agree that its natural to be curious, but a lot of us were taught good manners, where we learnt self control, as a form of respect. An ethic that is fast disappearing with modern media. Not saying that my curiosity is still live and kicking - but l don't expect it to be satisfied.
Always thought people came to see them and did not care to hear the music.. so why bother to sing .just mouth the words and people would not care at that point.
A few visits to his house in the 1960's (probably out of guilt) - a ticket to the Hard Days Night premiere with other family members and a couple letters in about 1975 that's about the extent of their relationship after their slaggy mum damaged that poor police officers car. Still it's a good claim to fame isn't it? and there's money to be made out of the more guilable Beatles fans.😊
@@scottandrewbrass1931Watch out what you say about John and John's half sister Julia, from now on I have passed on your smutty comments to who is involved in John Lennon's Estate.
He spent a lot of time at his mother’s home when he found out that she was living not far away. It was a very special time for him before his mother was mown down by that drunken idiot
@@twistoffate4791 Any lack of contact with anyone for any reason I believe has to do with Ono. She controlled what was going on there even with phone calls as it’s said Julian’s calls were not always put through to John. Lennon talked about going back to England many times but never did as at first, he didn’t have a green card. And when he obtained it, there supposedly was still some worries but he went to Japan w/Ono so I’m getting a control factor out of this on Ono’s part
