Hi, I’m currently working in an underground mine up in Nunavut as an exploration tech. and most of my experience is from geology/ exploration. Right now I’m interested in getting a degree in mining. Any preferences of school such as UBC and UofA ( pros and cons) and is it hard to get job after graduation? What’s better soft rock or hard rock mining?

both are good schools, but UBC is more expensive because it has a better brand name, but that doesn't necessarily matter in the mining industry. Since UBC is in Vancouver, it is also warmer, but it is also more humid and has more rain. Soft vs hard rock wise, it really depends on your preference. Both can provide a good salary, for example underground gold mining is lucrative, so is coal mining at Teck or the oil sands.

By choosing soft rock you are limiting yourself to oil sands, coal, potash and such. To me hard rock is more universal and more interesting. In Northern Ontario alone for example I know at least 15 mines (underground and open pit) and they are hard rock. Consider Queens University as well. It is a very strong school, they also have great facilities (especially their blasting lab). I am myself studying at Laurentian - it is a shit show happening there now. It used to be a reputable school with famous underground hardrock mining program, they fucked up everything now. Both UBC and UofA are top Canada schools. But I heard (I might be wrong) they are making focus on open pit mining which is fair considering they have so many open pit mines in the area. Underground mining is more complicated (in terms of design), so to me it is more interesting.

The fact that you already have work experience under your belt gives you a good advantage in the job market once you graduate. I always recommend to people to get work experience before graduating as you’re more competitive compared to those who don’t. The more work experience to show on your resume the better!

FYI. You don't have to register for CO-OP and pay fees. You can just take a 16 months off period (just inform Register that you are returning in a year). You are looking for co-ops yourself anyways. My student co-worker did this. Some of the companies are requiring you to be registered in co-op program, but out of 10 ads I have seen only 1 company requesting this. UPD: My above comment is misleading for future International Student. Not having to register for Co-op only applies to Domestic students.
@KwanFung
@KwanFung 2 года назад
that's true, but for international students they need to be in co-op to maintain their full-time student status for their visa's

@@KwanFung I didn't know that (I am a domestic student), thank you for pointing this out!
