I find Dr. Johnson to be perhaps the most brilliant and balanced communicator of Biblical and Christian thought. His honesty is refreshing and his connections and applications to the 21th Century are thought-provoking and accurate. As an ex-Catholic Protestant evangelical Christian with a Ph.D, I am fairly familiar with the traditional Christian viewpoint, Dr. Johnson has opened my eyes to perspectives I had not considered. To those of you who tend to reject Dr. Johnson as Roman Catholic and thus incapable of accurately teaching an accurate view of Christian history you are missing an extraordinary opportunity to learn about your faith.

Dr Jim Nichols listening to his lectures that are presented in The Great Courses and I definitely agree. I enjoy learning religous studies, Hebrew bible and new testament and its hard to find an unbiased perspective and i feel like Dr. Johnson does a great job. I enjoy his lectures quite a bit as well as his approach

So intreting the division of different types of religiosity not dependent of the religion but of how to relate and live any religion.

How can Johnson say that in the Gospels there is "very little" saying "examine your conscience" or "think in a different way"? (he says this around 15:20 I believe). Try reading any one of Jesus' parables, especially the Sermon on the Mount, and tell me he isn't trying to change the way people think. Johnson's categories are helpful, but I think they overlap more than he would like to admit.

Yeah basically Jesus says to believe and have faith , which of course is the way to think as a believer in Him, who is God, and the awaited Savior

While Dr. Johnson is a brilliant thinker about Christianity, like most Christians his understanding of Buddhism is impoverished and inadequate. This is shown in this video where he describes the Dalai Lama's form of Buddhism as Theravadan, which aims at the extinction of the self. The Dalai Lama practices Vajrayana Buddhism that aims at the complete transformation of our alienated state, original sin to use a Catholic category, to a state of effortless and permanent virtue. Furthermore, the Dalai Lama is not just a gnostic he is to use Dr. Johnson schema: a philosopher, gnostic, and bishop.

Reminds me of my studies in Philosophy/Psychology...I was seeking Truth, never coming to the Truth at all. Sorry, not sorry, but LTJ comes across as an elitist acedemian, and I get no sense of a true encounter with Christ.
