Hello Everyone,
I am so excited for you all to listen to this really pleasant conversation I had with NYCB Principal Dancer Tiler Peck. The world renowned, incredibly dynamic, musical and versatile dancer of today.
People have said about her
"I don't even have to hear the music to be able to know what it sounds like when I watch you dance."
Tiler Peck started dancing at her mother's studio at the age of two and was introduced to various dance styles.
She worked with former Bolshoi principal dancer Alla Khaniashvili and former New York City Ballet dancers Patricia Neary and Yvonne Munsey.
Peck's journey led her to the School of American Ballet (SAB) and eventually to New York City Ballet.
She had to navigate the transition from jazz to ballet and overcome feelings of comparison and insecurity.
Peck's musicality is a defining characteristic of her dancing, and she describes it as being an extension of the music.
She believes in breaking the rules and being fearless on stage.
In this conversation, Tiler Peck discusses the importance of musicality in ballet and how it can be taught. Can it be taught to the degree Tiler is gifted?
She emphasizes the need for dancers to listen to the music and become comfortable with it, allowing it to guide their movements.
Tiler also shares her experience as a perfectionist and how it has both helped and hindered her progress.
She highlights the importance of finding a balance between striving for perfection and letting go to fully express oneself.
Tiler also talks about the significance of downtime and having experiences outside of ballet, which can enhance a dancer's artistry and bring more depth to their performances.
Let's meet Tiler!

I love watching dancers interview dancers. It’s so good. Not this surface stuff the general interviewers ask. Loved this.

Great interview. I loved that you d!idn't ask the same-old same-old but dived a bit more deeply into some of the things that dancers really want to hear about. Thank you.

Ah, this was fantastic! Isabella did a brilliant job interviewing Tiler with such thoughtful, insightful and informative questions. I am so grateful you asked Tiler about her musically, because I think the concept and practice of how an artist can aim to obtain that skill is one that is a bit more mature, but such a valuable explanation and discussion ❤! You can teach musicality. You can speak of rhythm, dynamic, melody, feeling of the music. You have ro break it down.

I absolutely agree. In Russia, the students at Vaganova have piano lessons, and I think it really helps to play an instrument and to be able to read music. Many people say it’s a waste of time and takes away time that the students need for ballet training, but I disagree. It’s also very important to train your ears, and you listen to music in a different way when you understand it.

I really related to Tiler's injury. Not knowing if she would ever dance again. That was me, 9 years ago. I had a brain tumor removed from my Cerebellum which controls the balance part of your brain. When I was healed and able to dance again, I totally felt so grateful and complete joy. Also a real appreciation for dance and life that I never felt in that way before.😊❤❤❤

This was so interesting, thank you so much! Even as an amateur dancer I love watching your videos and interviews with professionals. Not only young students, but as a mature dancer who only started at the age of 26 (I'm 35 now) I learn so much and it challenges me to think differently about my dancing and how to find joy in expressing myself though this art form by not comparing to others, but rather focus on what makes me happy and makes me unique. And also props to you Isabella for asking such insightful questions and interesting topics ❤🙌🏻 You can tell you really did your research and listened carefully to what Tiler was speaking about. And to keep in line with the musicality topic.. you were tuned in well/you vibed well with eachother 😊 Thanks again! 🙏😄

Haha. I just judged a dance competition last weekend and I said EXACTLY the title of this video in one of my comments to a dancer.... I was explaining that she needed to study more ballet technique and learn placement because her spine was arched and her shoulder blades pinched closed, ribcage totally open in the front. I was telling her that she needed to learn how to do things correctly, then once you know HOW to do that .. THEN you can break the rules! But if you can't do it correctly, it will never work. Only when you know all the right things for aligning the body can you stretch the positions of various body parts to make it look even better while still maintaining control. AWESOME. I love seeing things I'm teaching reinforced and taught by others.

Remember Tyler from BalletWest. Someone please give her voice lessons. A dancer needs a voice these days.
