PREACH! head of Stats Canada is like *being in a podcast with a holo girl who takes baths in tea and works in stats in government but also talks about important stuff on her holo pod? Sure why not public will benefit*
@@arctic2921 Changed my profil picture to this undoubtedly gorgeous portrait because creepy dudes kept „hey girl“-ing me in the comments. Hopefully manly Roomie will scare them away!
May I just drop a huge compliment on Cristine and Ben’s interview skills? Their questions were really engaging and they always seemed genuinely interested-and I love how it wasn’t just “question, answer, question, answer”. It was a real conversation! Huge props to you guys ❤️
I was thinking this too! Especially because Cristine has talked about how being an interviewer and interviewee make her a bit nervous. This was a great conversation 👏
I can’t get over how kind and polite and considerate this man at the top of the company is. You can tell he truly cares about individuals in the community. This is so refreshing.
@@mithrandirstormcrow4952 true! But I have seen government representatives that don’t treat others well and don’t genuinely care. So this was refreshing.
The ladder metaphor was inspiring...and also it makes appear mistakes as part of an experiment to find what's best for you (´∩。• ᵕ •。∩`) pretty nice pov
As an American, this is such a great and applicable explanation of the importance and process of the census. I feel like a lot of Americans have a strained relationship with the census because of the fear for privacy or because they are immigrants and fear prosecution, and I think Amil's explanation of the process is amazing. I found this pod very informative.
Can you imagine if our census had been presented in such a straightforward, rather utilitarian manner? I can't believe something so normal got so contentious.
As a Canadian, I appreciate y’all covering this topic. It’s super important and hopefully brings awareness to Americans who watch you as to how important it is to complete there’s as well.
@@XamanthaRose yeah ours is over and it is kind of getting some spotlight because texas and minnesota switched seats in the house based on less than 100 people. like, for the next 10 years a state has 1 less seat in congress because of a difference of like, 89 people
There are many Indians in Canada as well as Indian-Canadians here! Thankfully, Canada is very welcoming to Indians as far as I'm aware though, I am Canadian-born so I can't say for certain. My classmate in college just arrived here last month for school and she is from Mumbai. She is so sweet and well spoken. Some good Indian restaurants in my area as well! :)
As a fellow Canadian here I gotta say thanks for doing a whole episode on the census. I honestly had no idea it was happening until I clicked on this episode so thank you!! Young Canadians should totally participate in this it's so important!!
I'm actually excited about the census. I remember helping my grandmother fill hers out. How very nerdy. Can't wait to hear what Ben and Cristine have to say about it.
I'm so fucking excited about the census! I'm a social geographer and I also work in policy for the Canadian government, so this is like christmas. I got the short form and was so disappointed. Can't wait to play with the results and make pretty maps though!
"I'm so fucking excited about the census!" - said no one ever...except for you. What is wrong with you? The questions are far too over reaching and downright communist. They constantly lie to our faces so they don't deserve a shred of truth from us anyhow.
Unfortunately, in Brazil, our dis-government canceled this year's census so that they could try to avoid dealing with problems. They could learn a bit from Canada
exactly!!! if there is no data of people starved to (literally) death and how many of them are way worse since he started in the government, those people dont exist and therefore dont need help. everyday as a brazilian is a fucking nightmare.
I am so sorry that you and your people are going through this. I hope Brazil may find a better leader and/or government soon, and that your lives may improve upon it ❤ Sending you guys blessings and love, even though that doesn't really help, from Belgium ❤
This comment section is basically just people from the opposite side of the world checking in and I'm totally joining it from my random Russian city lol
I'm currently pulling at my hairs trying to push through my thesis and I'm finally writing my references. I cited Cristine's thesis and it reminded me that it was Taco Tuesday! It's just such a delight to listen to your voices and smart conversations, makes me feel like I can be as accomplished as you guys one day.
I'm in my first year of undergrad for Bachelors in Psychology, and I gotta say, this channel taught me more than my high school did and am learning something new every day (case in point, stock market, e-currency and social media) , NOT that I hate school (pls stay in school as mom says, and don't follow influencers telling you to drop out😖) . This really helped me a lot and am feeling smarter with every podcast I watch. Thank you so much!!
I feel like Cristine and Ben kinda adopted us with these podcasts. Not only are we learning valuable stuff but it's so interesting when they present it! 😁
Not going to lie, I greatly enjoy the filling in the census 😂 I always cross my fingers for the long census because I think it's important for future decisions and also I'm just weird like that!
Me too! I love filling out the census and I will go out of my way to contribute info to StatsCan if I can, haha. I think having access to these statistics and info about citizens is just really important across the board.
in my country everyone gets a long from, someone goes to your house in a special holiday for the census and the person interviews "the head of the home" lol
I'm a US citizen, but I am deeply interested in data analysis and statistics. I've always really loved when you guys are able and willing to talk about your work because it's really cool to see data analysis applied to various fields. For me, my interest lies primarily in biological and ecological statistics, so like helping keep track of wildlife and ecosystem health, and helping to inform management decisions, but this was so so fascinating to me! And it really makes it clear to me how diverse and wide the range of careers is for statisticians and data analysts. I hope that there are other people like me out there that see this and feel very inspired to keep working hard and seeking opportunities even if they may not outrightly seem like something that would interest me. This convinces me that I am pursuing the correct field, because if I can be interested in statistics relating to the Canadian human population, then I can go anywhere and do just about anything as a data analyst and feel like I'm contributing. I'm currently taking some bridge courses to prepare me for a master's or PhD in data science (my bachelor's is in biology so I didn't do much beyond basic analysis using software and Excel) . Thank you so much to everyone involved in this episode!
@💕Pastel Commenter💕 Technically, the word Anil refers to any sort of animal like a squirrel, chipmunk, or flying squirrel. This is because the actual name Anil means “wind” in Sanskrit. I’m sure my cousin would not want people thinking his name is ‘Squirrel’ haha
Having this conversation is something that is very necessary today, because many young people across the world, really, don't know about this. Fortunately some parents tell their children what Census is, but some people watching this probably don't know. I really love when people spread awareness on social media about this, because usually younger people are on here. It's great to see you guys spread the word, we all appreciate it!
Christine and Ben, I'm so proud of you both! It's really nice to see that he's trying to show a sense of community by referring to you as a colleague instead of him being your boss.I think it says something when a superior doesn't want to portray that sense of... well... superiority. As a Canadian and long time appreciator (lol) of your content, I'm just really glad to see this content and I sincerely hope you both feel a sense of achievement in both the impact you've had as creators and entertainers, but also the impact you've had as Canadian role models. I'm around your age but I just appreciate the content you've been pushing on all of your channels and business endeavors. Canadian media is important for so many reasons. I also hope you feel the impact you're having on it, especially in such an underrepresented area ( social media influencers). Now we just need to get you on CBC radio..... please? lol
Ben in his first ever appearance on Cristine’s channel versus Ben in the podcast: the CONFIDENCE, the glow up is real. You guys are doing great things on RU-vid. Congrats, but also, thank you.
I really appreciate you guys bringing Canada and Canadian issues to the forefront on the internet in the way you do. As much as I love watching Philip DeFranco, he mainly covers US news/issues. I'm glad to have a place to go where the perspectives put forward and topics covered are relevant to my everyday life as a Canadian :)
Let's praise Christine and Ben, how this plataform that Cristine made for fun and a way to be herself now is being seen in such a positive thing that people in the Goverment are interested and willing in have conversations for the younger people, this is such a huge step and honestly a good one!
I moved to Canada a few years ago so this is my first census. I really appreciate you guys talking about this! I loved learning about this and feeling more included in the community through this exercise!
Great to see this! I'm a transit planner in Ontario and use the census all the time at work. I'm excited about the new multi-modal commuting question :)
I was very happy to be able to self-describe gender and sexuality on the England Census this year. Also, census records are highly important and useful to genealogists, and I really do hope that our descendants will be able to access our census data 100 years in the future, as we can for our ancestors now.
Yes, it was a great step forward for gender and sexuality. The census is incredibly useful right now in England & Wales as the results determines the amount of funding for different areas: schools, roads, public transport, health & social care, equalities, anything else you can think of. How much money your local council gets is decided by this.
Meanwhile in the US last year, our president tried to put a question on it asking if people were illegal immigrants... you know... for science... definitely not to deport them
this is honestly my favourite episode of the podcast! even though I'm in India, it's really nice to get more informed about things, in general!! would really love to watch more of these videos 💜
His view on education is something I'll keep with me. I've been struggeling with anxiety because I have this clear path of career I want to take, but maybe I should trust that my career will take me on my journey. Thank you for keeping that in here ❤
It really spoke to me too, I'm about to finish my degree and I'm already getting nervous about finding a job etc. But it doesn't need to be the perfect job right away and I have to trust that I will find my way.
I've felt the same way at every point in my degree path . When I took my honors degree with the plan to go to grad school, I wanted to be a prof. But now that I'm almost done my PhD, there's SO many other things that I want to do too, and it really comes down to taking a bit of a chance, sometimes being nervous and uncomfortable, but still dipping your toes in to see what bits and pieces speak to you along the way. Sometimes I wonder if I wasted my time going to grad school now that I don't plan on being a prof, but then I look back at it and realize that I haven't exactly been unhappy even though it didn't go according to plan. And it turns out that the time allowed me to figure out what I really wanted, and develop the skills I needed for that. And it really was little seemingly random decisions that culminated in where I've ended up at this point. So I think it's perfectly fine to feel a bit nervous about not having this concrete plan, because it will probably go in a way different direction than you planned it anyways!
@@lizzybee16 as someone who is currently in grad school, unsure whether or not I will be able to land a PhD, thank you for your comment. I've always thought becoming a prof was my career path, but maybe I should let myself find out along the way! So again, thank you ❤
I know things are probably a little different in America, but this was still very good to be educated about what the census actually does in the long run. Thanks Cristine, Ben, and Anil!
I’m here! just a Mexican 🇲🇽in the USA 🇺🇸 learning of Canada 🇨🇦 Census. Your podcast has become my favorite thing to listen. Always a good laugh, interesting subjects and Calming voices! Keep the amazing work!
That's really cool you were able to get Anil on your channel! I'm a fellow Statscan employee too :) What a great way to inform and bring light to the impotence of our census. I learned a lot from watching this video. Keep up the good work you guys!
This was the fastest 50 minutes of canadian policy I’ve ever experienced. How you two make anything interesting is beyond me but *I am ready to be apart of this census* !!
Just completed my census form last night! It was my first one since this is the first census that I have not lived at my parents home. Is it weird that I was excited to finally complete one? I think it's so fascinating and important!
Watching this podcast makes every taco Tuesday so much better! Also being a canadian I finally understand all the places that are being named during these videos unlike any other podcasts 😂
To all Canadians, please fill-up the census. As someone who studied urban planning, I can tell you that the census gives crucial information for municipalities and to different municipalities organizations. It is not a problem for Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver if some people don’t answer it, but for many smaller cities, it can mean that Statcan cannot publish any data about them. In some places, the census can be the only way to know about immigration trends, the mode of transportation used to go to work, household characteristics or poverty. For any college students, you probably have access to older census through your school. Your library website should have all the info, but you’re probably looking for CHASS. It’s a census analyzer from the University of Toronto and the data are bilingual. For people who like linking stats with maps, you should check Statcan census geography if you’re looking for boundaries at different census divisions.
I don’t want to just not talk about how amazing and informative this vid was but, can y’all pls have Joana Ceddia. I was so disappointed when you said you couldn’t have her all. I stan all of y’all
Such an interesting perspective... You see, back in my country (Poland 🇵🇱) we’re having the national census this year too. The census is mandatory for everyone, with a fine of up to the equivalent of 1.6k CAD for failing to complete it 😕
FINALLY y’all collabed with Anil!!! Love his toy review channel 😜 J/K Canadian here loving the total statscan geekout 🍁 Also: smart to cover these topics with bill C-10 in the works (I’m pretty sure Cristine & Ben would do this kinda thing anyway, but still smart for Canadian creators to be thinking about Can Con) #CensusFOREVER #CANCON
I'm not even Canadian and you make me wanna take the census right now lol My country, Uruguay, does the census every 10 years, and it was due this year but they postponed it because of the pandemic. We are still going house to house writing the information down, no electronic census for us, so that may be why lol
We still do that in the US as well. I think we also had a phone option this year as well? I still remember them coming up to our house in 2010, but I wasn’t home last year.
I appreciate how passionate, knowledgeable, and forward-looking Anil is about the importance of the Canadian census. Great interview and super informative! It has this American listening attentively and learning something new about the processes of another country.
This is so Canadian, & I love it. Census in the US is starting to get a bit more revival for more of us in the Xennial & Millenial range, so it's nice to get the Canadian view on theirs. The way he said it's like a family portrait is really a great analogy!!
What a great way to use your platform. So much information that applies to more countries than just Canada. I’m always excited for the census, and even helped my family fill their’s our last year!
as a Canadian, I just want to say a huge thank you for doing this episode, and for all the other times you've both spoken about your jobs and statistics as a field. My family and I always fill out the census just out of default, but I did not fully understand how it can affect us on an everyday basis. on a larger scale, it's also aided me in learning about what Statistics Canada does and how it contributes to and affects our society. I'm in my mid-20s and I wish that there was more formal education about what other government workers do, because I feel like this information really helps broaden the way we understand our government. I'm feeling empowered to share this information with my friends and family now. huge thanks to Cristine, Ben, and Mr. Arora for this super informative and important episode! and shout out from Edmonton!! i'm also hoping for the Oilers to have a good playoff run this year!!
I might be too big of a nerd, but this was legit my favourite episode of the podcast. The census is super important to me and the work I do, so I'm glad to get some behind the scene details.
I live in the United States, but this is so interesting to me. We also take a census here, I'm not sure how different it is to Canada's, but, this was such a fantastic conversation to be witness to!
Okay, why was this so wholesome... THIS is what youtube needs more of. educational, FUNNY, genuine information on how to be a better CITIZEN❤️❤️❤️❤️ sorry, currently in texas and watching my country tear itself apart has broken my heart :/ thank you ben & christine for doing this :)
Thank you for hosting this Christine and Ben! I live in a basement apartment and my landlord received upstairs received the census letter but I haven't.
In Scotland, our next census is 2022. I also just participated in a Office Of National Statistics survey about income & spending. This episode is so interesting! I work for my local government and you guys have actually made me more proud of my role there. You help me see the bigger picture ♥️
