Before this comments section gets too heated, remember we all have different needs and wants. You’re not a more prestigious filmmaker because you don’t need/want certain features that others want. Let’s all be grown adults here 😉

We never dare to question Komodo on that insta260 ish screen on their camera but a company tryna make affordable camera takes the heat. These guys are so humble and transparent and he relate to every question like an upcoming film maker lol Genius!😁

I understand the perspective but the Komodo is also smaller and the screen is on the top. Red also never had a history of making articulating screens. Blackmagic does so it’s already in the cards, ya know?

@@AnthonyRodriguezz I don't get what the "history of making articulating screens" means here. They also have a history of not doing that. The original BMCC, BMPCC, BMPC, and BMPCC4K, don't have articulating screens. The Micro Studio Camera and Micro Cinema Camera had no screen. Also if you just want a camera brain with nothing extra so you can adapt it to your needs and you already feel like the screen is too much, why complain that they didn't stray further from what you want? Like I get not want to pay for a screen when you're going to probably rig another screen to it, but figure out what you want. Same applies to the ND argument. Unless you only ever need 2,4, or 6 stops and never more less or in-between, you're going to need to use external NDs (probably a vari-ND) anyway so why do you want to pay for the internal ND? Built-in NDs are for convenience, as are built in screens, and handles, etc.

The ARRI and Venice cameras have screens on the side and no one complains. But, now the PYXIS has it and suddenly people are confused and/or upset? For the price this is a really good camera. My main concern is, can I use the existing SDI monitors Blackmagic has to control the PYXIS? That is something I hope they're able to make happen.

no control with the sdi video assist monitors. What is definitely possible and they seem to fail to answer everytime, is if they will make a monitor that allows control over the usbc in front of the cam. There is a menu option to assign functions to the buttons on their new evf, so this is definitely possible. But blackmagic being blackmagic, they decided to release an evf which only a fraction of the market will use instead of a monitor with control features.
@chrisbogart687
@chrisbogart687 5 месяцев назад
SDI is a two way protocol. Yes the USB C and the video assist does have usb c for firmware updates. BM did release a new Video assist - firmware and software updates can make it happen within the BM ecosystem. As he said - what you see is what we can get to market - NOW! Let's see what updates brings us.

They are not cameras that are supposed to be used by solo operators, they are cameras to be operated by crews and on large productions. This is why the likes of internal ND and an articulating screen is important for a camera for solo users.

A flip out screen on the side would have made this camera extremely versatile. They probably would have gotten less backlash by not including a screen at all and having an HDMI out alongside SDI

Name a box camera in this class that has a flip out screen. Red KOMODO, Z-Cam, Kinefinity. None of those have a screen or flip out screen. I think some also don’t realize the weight to have a flip out screen will make it heavier for gimbal mounting and less versatile. The box-like design historically comes with the versatility to be a toolbox rig design. Allows the operator to decide how to leverage the tool. Think of it this way. You can buy the 5” 12G Video Assist and put the monitor anywhere you want in your rig. For essentially the same cost that you would if they manufactured the articulating screen that you cannot move. Putting a camera on a gimbal you can’t use the screen anyways. In that case having less weight for a 3-6 hour shoot to operate on a gimbal is a win. Versatility comes from the ability to design your own rig. Not embedding functionally you cannot change, remove, or be flexible to ALL use cases. ND’s well… yeah that part is lame imo. I would rather have them in camera.
@PopoRamos
@PopoRamos 5 месяцев назад
@@GalaxyGameTV Blackmagic reasoning is that they wanted a camera you can use straight out of the box even though you can’t really use it straight out of the box 🤣. That screen is purely to change menu settings faster and more conveniently than using the buttons. I understand that the box design is for modularity, but when you look at that screen you just can’t help but think that it would have been awesome if it worked kinda like the ursa, I applaud blackmagic for making a decision, I’m personally still buying it, I think the camera looks great. I wonder if the USB C display out works with portable usb c displays and the XReal type glasses 🤔 or is it locked to their view finder? Could you use a phone or iPad via usb c as a monitor and menu control? Lots still to discover

A good approach can be to have this camera with an L mount and then get the mofage PL-L adapter with internal NDs, and for a monitor maybe portkeys with SDI and camera control, just saying, I understand many creators will happily pay more for the camera to have all those things but guys there are others like me for example that are starting, and already getting this camera at 3000 is a bit hard. Just to clarify when I said I am starting it means that I already have some experience but just don't have that many clients yet, I would rather celebrate that at least I have the option to get a cinema camera with this nice form factor that looks really professional, other than being really hype for a camera that I can't get right now, Other than that I really love the interview, killing questions, it was by far the best interview in terms of information that I have seen so far.

Awesome show this year, so many cool new things and yes the new 6k is next level… even with no ND. BTW the flange distance for the mirrorless mount is so short it is extremely difficult to put mechanical ND between the sensor and the lens. Maybe electronic ND.. but then you’re modifying the signal. Thanks for the show floor review!

Double the price of the camera, make it another 1/3rd or so larger (to make room up front for the NDs to slide out of the way of the sensor) and heavier, and before you know it you’ve got the Ursa 4.6k replacement that BM certainly has in the works. As for the side screen, if you’ve never shot on the shoulder then the screen looks out of place, but on a shoulder rig, it’s fantastic placement and much better than the flip out screen on the current Ursa cameras.
@danielvilliers612
@danielvilliers612 5 месяцев назад
You think adding an internal ND is going to make a camera 1/3 bigger lol.
@waveland
@waveland 5 месяцев назад
@@danielvilliers612 It’s called geometry. With the mount dead center as it is you do not have enough distance above or below the sensor to park a 3:2 ND and its support framing. So if you stretch the height of the camera body by let’s say 3/4 of an inch to make room and leave the other two dimensions the same then you’ve added about 15 cubic inches to the volume of the camera. At that point you’re well on your way to an Ursa Jr. This isn’t hard to visualize by the way, if you take a screen shot of the front schematic, draw a rectangle large enough to cover the sensor without casting a shadow (much larger than the sensor itself), thicken the line to approximate a frame, then slide it out of the way. The ND glass will poke out the top of the camera. And electronic NDs soak up a lot of light (2 stops in the FX6) so you can’t install them in a fixed position. So yes, full frame BM cameras with internal NDs will be quite a bit bigger than the Pyxis-unless someone comes up with a perfectly clear electronic ND some day. One could hope.
@DiodeFilms
@DiodeFilms 5 месяцев назад
The screen is perfect for me. Its designed to be only a control screen, and it assumes you use an external monitor because this is a camera designed to be rigged up, unlike the Ursa, which is meant to be usable unrigged. Making it articulating would have added more bulk and expense. It looks like the front mount can be unscrewed, so maybe in addition to a 'pro' model, they will release new mounts that have NDs, which would be cool.
@AnthonyRodriguezz
@AnthonyRodriguezz 5 месяцев назад
It actually wouldn’t add much bulk. The screen is recessed!
@SixStringGrace
@SixStringGrace 2 месяца назад
I'm honestly so confused. People asked for a box camera (a style of camera that has to be built out), and now some people are upset it has to be built? The URSA IS a box camera that has built in ND, flip out screen, 2 full size XLR, and more. Because of those extra features it costs more and is a little bigger. This is the opposite of that, a camera that can be cheaper because all those features are removed. The screen is there for the menus and maybe an AC who would stand to the side of the camera. Everything about the camera is designed for a build, just like a RED or Z CAM. If you want this sensor in a body that needs less building, that's the Cinema 6k.

@myownfriend23
@myownfriend23 3 месяца назад
I think the issue with the internal NDs is that it's more difficult to do those with a mirrorless mount. It's not impossible, but much more difficult to do when you have much less space between the back of the lens and the sensor. If you look at their cameras with internal ND its the Pocket 6K Pro and Ursa 12Ks. What are the mount options available in those? PL, EF, and LPL which have flange distances of 52mm, 40mm, 44mm respectively. The L mount has a flange distance of just 20mm and M43 is 19.25mm. They already have to fit an OLPF there so squeezing an ND wheel in there is complicated.

@@AnthonyRodriguezz Well it's not complicated to do when you have the space. and DJI has the space.
@AnthonyRodriguezz
@AnthonyRodriguezz 2 месяца назад
DJI is a mirrorless mount. For example I use the L mount and it has the exact same distance as any other mirrorless mount
@myownfriend23
@myownfriend23 2 месяца назад
@@AnthonyRodriguezz You're correct. I kind of forgot what I said when I posted my first comment and while I still think flange distance makes it slightly more difficult, I don't think it's the primary reason the 6K FF doesn't have ND. The difference between it and the DJI is that the DJI has space for the ND filters to retract above and below the sensor. The 6K Pro has a significantly smaller sensor that's almost half the height of the sensor in the 6K FF. That means that you can stack two of the 6K Pro's ND filters in the same vertical space as the 6K FF's sensor. In order to fit the 6K Pro's ND filter system into the 6K FF, it would need twice the vertical space. Also I believe DJI's 6K sensor is just short of a typical full frame size.
@myownfriend23
@myownfriend23 2 месяца назад
Just checked and the DJI seems to only use a (roughly) 17:9 area of it's sensor so if it still has a width of 36mm (it might not), it's effective height would be just 18.98mm. So at max it's only 46% taller than the 6K Pro's sensor (12.99mm) and 21% shorter than the 6K FF's sensor (24mm).

I believe this is a production cinema camera in a price range of any canon /sony mirrorless. People with flip screens still add monitors to their cameras. So I don’t think not having a tilting screen would make any difference. On the ND, I haven’t try any camera with internal ND more than camcorders so I don’t know how much better it is vs external ND. If someone is willing to pay more then Sony FX6 would be the one. Now you can look more professional with this camera than with a Sony fx30 rigged out. 😂 Just saying. I feel most cameras are all becoming very similar because they buy sensor from Sony, I'm not sure if this is true but a safe speculation would be that this camera uses the same sensor as the A7III, and Sony wouldn't sell them their A7IV sensor until they have a better sensor when they eventually launch A7V with hopefully a newer sensor. I feel that buying Sony's sensor is the bottle neck for different camera companies to differentiate themselves with each other. One advantage that Canon has is that they make their own sensor, though most of the time it's inferior to Sony's, it's different, and people like different. I think Nikon did the right move by acquiring RED for their sensor development technology and also partly the cinema capabilities. This allow Nikon to differentiate themselves. From my knowledge, S5II, S5IIX, a bunch of Nikon camera, some Leica, Blackmagic and the A7III all uses the same sensor. It's a decent sensor, but people want something different, and BRAW capabilities seems not enough for most people I know. Just my 2 cents.

@@AnthonyRodriguezz not a joke. If blackmagic wanted to change the game, they'd make a camera that could record 16 bit like the arri, Sony and red camera. BRAW is only 12 bit which is prosumer in my opinion. You miss a lot of color information in 12 bit. That's why the high end professional cameras are all 16 bit. BRAW can be expanded in resolve to 16 bit, but it doesn't create and add the color information back.

I do full blown $30k projects with 10 bit… with zero issues. I’d choose BRAW over ProRes raw, which is 16bit raw any day of the week because of how robust braw actually is and the files sizes

@@AnthonyRodriguezz listen, a full episode of DR house was shot on a 5d mark ii in 8 bit, and it was great for the day. But there's a reason why nearly all if not all films are recorded in 16 bit. It's not an accident. It's not about having "issues" with 12 bit, it's about having a better image. And 30k is a nice piece of change but that has nothing to do with color bit depth. I acknowledge that it is definitely hard to develop codecs to record 16 bit, but if red can do it, hopefully one day blackmagic can do it. Until then I'm sticking to what gives the best chance of a great image

I feel like the price of a camera is usually a good indicator as to what kind of filmmaker the camera is for. IMO this camera targets solo operators doing smaller budget productions and one man band/run-and-gun type stuff. When you think about the things that those kinds of filmmakers value - like speed and convenience, which both the articulating screen and internal NDs would have helped immensely in, the design choices just continue to puzzle me. The PYXIS is still amazing for what it is, especially when you compare it to other offerings on the market currently. It's just not for me and that's okay.
@guguemichaels
@guguemichaels 5 месяцев назад
Pure nonsense. I'm an indie director/ cinematographer with 8 feature films under my belt. 4 of those 8, I was a solo DP and I see nothing wrong with this camera. Absolutely NOTHING. Why? Well, because I am going to kit it out anyway. No indie Dp I know, uses run and gun, that's for content creators and wedding shooters. Even documentary guys still light their talking heads. This is a cinema camera for controlled environment. Meaning, you rig it out to fit your needs. Articulating screen don't mean shyt because DPs use monitors. Also, articulating camera will make this another Ursa Mini pro. Why not just g buy that instead?? You people are just too damn picky. Y'all want a perfect camera for $3K...that's just ridiculous and laughable at best.
@di2ifter
@di2ifter 5 месяцев назад
@@guguemichaels That's great that you know what camera features that you need that complement your shooting style. I know the same for mine, and this camera's lack of internal NDs and articulating screen don't complement my preferred shooting style, simple as that. The URSA Cine 12K hits all of the checkboxes that I find lacking in the PYXIS, so I plan on getting that instead. I'm just slightly disappointed because the PYXIS could have hit those checkboxes at a lower price point and better size - but their design team decided against it. And that's totally fine, it's their camera and it's up to them to decide what features need to be included and how to implement them.

Don't like his answer/non answer about internal NDs. The president doesn't know why? It could be that it's too expensive. Well then why did you put it in the Pocket camera after people complained that they wanted it. So you make a new box camera and repeat the same thing knowing people want internal NDs. Then he tips his hat, maybe we'll add it in another version. I really don't like camera companies that intentionally leave out features like that so they can sell you on a new and improved camera. I feel like they didn't want it to compete against the Pocket and segmenting it so this model has this and that model has that and you should buy both cameras. This cameras seems very limited for a narrow niche so it won't compete against the Pocket. It's too bad I was hoping for an FX6 like camera...

Bruh, what is your obsession with freaking ND?? Get you a damn matt box, problem solved. If you don't make movies, then this camera is not for you. My goodness. You all complain and sob and begged for BM box camera, they create it and there you are bytching about the damn ND. have you thought maybe if they put ND, it's basically Ursa Mini pro 6k?? Have you thought about that?? Every freaking movie set or TV show in the world uses matt box on set, so they can use whatever filter they want. That's 99.999999% of every Dp on earth that shoots major films and TV series. If you want a run and gun camera with ND, GO BUY THAT! You RU-vid content creator guys that don't shoot movies need to go sit down somewhere bro. This camera is for indie movie DPs that will use it n a controlled environment (like most movie sets/locations). meaning, you light your scene properly with your ND in your matt box. I swear, all the damn complaining is annoying. You all forget, this is a freaking $3K camera. Smdh🙄
