yeah- I always get my hopes up _aaaaand then_ that one person speaks up, you know, the one with a mic from 1923 that just rakes your ears- _or_ the one that drops out every third syllable- _OR_ my personal favourite; then one with serious inter personal issues.
The Glass Cannon podcast does a ton of short playthroughs of various systems. Much respect for them. Knights of Last Call is another one (their early episodes have more issues, but they got smoothed out).
Tech problems are not always the fault of the person. Networks sometimes screw up and/or break down. And some people can't afford professional equipment. And sometimes things just go wrong without any good reason.
@@swytchblayd To be fair you don't need to spend very much to get good audio anymore but there is some investment in knowledge and setup one may not be willing to pay.
I know a lot of people are complaining about the joking and the less than serious mood, but I love it! This is how normal people actually play games. It's not the fanciful full on voice acting Shakespearean drama that a lot of podcasts and live play try to portray. I love the camaraderie and the easy way everyone interacts. It seems a lot more natural. As for breaking immersion, I guess I've just always been that person who's always known I've been playing a game or watching someone play a game regardless of how serious or into it I get.
I believe the majority of the complaints about the laughing and joking come from people who have more experience reading and watching RPGs than they have playing RPGs. To them, it's the theory of games (Horror games must always be serious and intense to achieve drama.) or they consider it like television. Sure, we got goofy and laughed a lot. Not all my games are that silly. Some have gotten quite intense and serious. But the great majority are spent laughing our butts off. But even with all the joking, we stayed focused on solving the mystery. Combined, both videos come to about 5 hours and 15 minutes. Once you take out introductions, the recap, and closing chit-chat/wind-down, we did it in 4 hours and 15 minutes. We got a lot done in that time. There were a lot of scenes. I've played in many games that would have taken twice as long to do that.
As someone who basically have no experience with playing pen'n'paper RPGs I indeed expected playing a RPG, let alone a horror RPG, to be much more serious. But the chemistry among the players was so great and they were so funny that I did not mind their somewhat goofy attitude at all.
I actually do not see the joking as a problem as everyone was doing it. I find it a bit more off putting when only one person is being the joker while everyone else is serious though even that has its place
Comedy is natural in horror games/movies. It releases the tension and grounds the game in reality as long as the horror aspects are taken seriously and the joking stops when shit gets serious or hits the fan.
Check out 'The Lovecraft Tapes' podcast. The style and tone is very similar. It's not as well produced as this (at least to start with), but like this it doesn't take itself too seriously and has fantastic role playing and chemistry between the players and GM. As you say it reminds me far more of your average game than being sculpted and scripted and packaged for consumption to the extent it's more a production piece than a real game. I think this is why this is one of the few (along with this video) actual plays I can actually listen to.
Imagine if one day a video like this one just drops on youtube and there's both Seth and Dweebles playing, each one with his own cam, completely smooth and without any explanation xD
@@viceroy___ I like that the mechanics are pretty logical and mainly easy to grasp - basically roll less than your skill in x or whatever and extreme rolls either provide extreme nastiness or goodness. I also think because combat in CoC tends to be lethal people avoid it so theres more emphasis on other areas of roleplay
Skid is absolutely inspired as the "talent" for the team. Everybody moved mountains in this stream, but Skid is the MVP in my book. 10/10 great show, guys.
I can't help but really like Skid Maher - he seems like a friendly, humble, easy going guy, and the fact that he looks like Andrew Klavan with hair also helps. What a fun group! Wish I had a gaming group like this. Thanks for sharing the session with us!
Glass Cannon is top tier stuff. Also check out their series: Androids and Aliens (first 90ish are podcast, then are on RU-vid), Get In The Trunk, and New Game Who Dis for some amazing content. Probably many others, but these are some I’ve really enjoyed so far.
Jack the NPC gets his own show..... he gets to play his character “Seth “ playing a character. You guys have to launch that News channel and show. The Delta Green Team on this investigation will love these guys..... .
I caught this live on twitch and damn.. this was so good I might actually just watch it again. Been a GCN fan for years. Never heard of Seth till now, but he seems like a lot of fun. Subscribed.
I really hate watching other people play, it's boring and tedious and ehhh. God this was great, you were great and you had great chemistry with them. It was funny and at the same time I was genuinely really really into the mystery.
This is the best live play ever. Period. I laughed so hard, i had to stop watching this on the subway. Voice acting, the spotlight on the characters, pacing, the roleplaying aspects are top quality.
Holy shit my dad is a cinematographer and I was his assistant and that is exactly what it's like. Pockets bursting with batteries, cables, clamps, tape. Very accurate
"My college tuition is in those cards, man." 😂 "You look like you were thinking of my old buddy, Scott Parker." 🤣 "You kids and your amateur pornography." 🤣
This is like when chocolate and peanut-butter found one another. Two great channels that are great channels together. Thank you Glasscannon and well done Seth!
@@dubuyajay9964not sure about Scott Parker but bombshell is a code word Seth and his group used to say "shits heading south, let's go loud" Scott brown was a real estate agent(npc) known for being violent if something got in his way the way
I don't normally enjoy actual plays much but man, I'm only 23 minutes in so far and I can't stop laughing. These guys seemed like a lot of fun to play with. Great video so far, I'm looking forward to finishing it!
@@cambionblack7939 Looking at IMDb it doesn't look like any of them involve liver-stealing fat-sucking serial killers, so I'm not really seeing the connection the rec algorithm is making there. There is one with Keye Luke reprising his role as Number One Son from the Charlie Chan movies though. That's some surprising franchise crossover work for the 1940s.
@@richmcgee434 RU-vid can be sneaky. I put out a video clip of Critical Role with them making fun of Werther’s Originals. I tagged it Werther’s and people replied that they were getting their ads shown afterwards :) Seth has maybe tagged his vid ‘mystery’ ‘detective’ ‘investigation’ and somewhere in there RU-vid has figured you would like Mister Moto. The question is then… did you like the Mister Moto clips? :)
@@cambionblack7939 Actually I've got the one with Keye Luke playing right now. The yellowface and sterotyping is deeply offensive from a 2022 perspective, but if you can power through it the acting's actually decent, there's some good comedy between Keye Luke and the bumbling kleptomaniac sidekick guy, and the murder plot seems pretty solid so far. Always liked seeing Luke on screen, especially when he was working alongside Mantan Moreland. Both of them were grossly underappreciated actors back in the day, but that's 1940s Hollywood for you. What was the name of that old Magic card that looked like it had Werther's candies on it? Greed, maybe? I remember everyone shouting "Werthers!" every time it got played...
You gotta find the right time to do it. In one of their past shows (androids and aliens) they decided to go off the written adventure a little bit to go on a live TV interview, and it is so hilarious as they role-play it out (I believe thebepisode is called "good morning glipglorp")
@@DabroodThompson Yeah. That was my thinking. Being Keeper for an existing stream, as a guest one-shot. Although given Seth's existing workload, I can see why he wouldn't!
"You look like you were thinking of my old friend, Scott Parker" "I'll come back later and buy a suit for that funeral!" 6 AM and I laughed like a maniac.
Man, this was just a blast to watch. I’m so happy. A little over a year ago I was scouring RU-vid for reviews and videos about Cyberpunk Red and two channels resonated with me: Seth’s and The Glass Cannon. I’ve been *consumed* with this TTRPG hobby ever since. I appreciate this channel (and GCN) so much. Thank you for this.
Seth I am a younger gamer (21) and I’ve been running and playing B/X d&d and recently realized how awesome Call of Cthulhu is thanks to your videos. I am starting a weekly game night with some high school friends and I haven’t decided if I wanted to run B/X which I understand or Call of Cthulhu which seems fun but more difficult to run successfully for my friends. I was JUST thinking about how seeing actual play from you would be awesome and lo’ and behold 10 seconds ago you upload just that video! I’m sure once I get a better grasp of skills and sanity over the next few days along with this actual play video I will be able to make a better decision on which game to run!
For Call of Cthulhu, I recommend picking up the free Quickstart rules and running a couple of them through The Haunting. It's a super-cheap (cheap as free) way to at least test the waters to see how you all like it.
The Haunting is a good step-off point for both an introduction to CoC but also to the PCs (whom survive) to form a Paranormal Investiagtion group that would make future adventures more easy to manage starting off
I was so confused at first, when I got the notification I thought. "Hol- is- intimate???*" then the intro rolled and I realized it was a scenario play and not a guide on bard related roleplaying acivities
I never watch these types of sessions. I've tried, even stuff like Critical Roll, but for some reason it's never done it for me. This, however, I watched from start to finish, and would more than gladly do so again! So many cool and funny moments!
The whole debate about that stealth roll from 52:30 onward is a great example of how to properly negotiate with your GM. It's awesome to see the trust these guys have for each other at the table.
usually I cannot stand watching other people play RPGs, something about it just triggers second hand embarrassment for me. This, however, was just great and I had a blast watching it the whole time. Thanks for the great entertainment!
I think it's about the chemistry and people feeling comfortable, both with themselves and the group. Sometimes it feels like you're watching a group of high-schoolers trying to seem cool to each other.
@@velentr Not only that, but you need general "podcast skills". People who arent used to being on camera will both talk over each other and leave a lot of dead space. Timing in an art form and requires practice to get consistently
watching this while painting some vintage Heritage mind flayers of all things and I tend to hold brushes in my mouth to transition from one type to another during the paint process. Part of the video made me burst out laughing sending 2 brushes flying. Really Great stuff!!!
My two favorite gaming channels combining like Voltron! Seth is the reason I now ref Pulp Cthulhu and as a long-time Pathfinder GM I love to listen to the GCP! Now I want to hear Seth GM the GCP guys in a Traveller game! Shut up and take my money!
"Dylan, how comfortable are you posing as a police detective?" Absolutely slayed me lmfao. Delivered with almost the same energy as, "Have you ever been in a...turkish prison?"
Wow! The restaurant scene with the coroner was just the best. Seth easily had the best line in context, "We better report this credit card stolen in a few minutes." 🤣
This was great, you are all very funny. This sounds to me like the old Firesign Theater guys doing a CoC adventure. Truly awesome stuff. I hope this becomes a routine thing. You all have excellent chemistry together.
Amazing another playthrough with Seth I watched a bunch of your how we roll content and I agree with other commenter I think we'd like to see you run a game for somebody 😍😍😍👍👍
You guys have so much chemistry and Mr. Lavallee ran this great especially for a first time Keeper. I come back and rewatch this here and there (like right now.)
“I’ve got an idea, this is crazy, but what if we lure this guy out and just *shoot* him…” When you put it like that, it makes all the rest of investigative techniques seem kinda silly.
Normally I don't find Call of Cthulhu to be fun watching, but this was great. Love the plot. Seems inspired by X-Files 2Shy episode, with possibly some shape changer thrown in. Maybe inspired by the Gender Bender episode as well :)
This was absolutly awesome. I tried to watcg cthulhu actual plays before but they were always so slow and boring. But this Daily Flügelhorn crew was so much fun!
What a gift for the fans! As a fan of both Seth and the GCP, this was a dream come true. Thank you for doing this with the guys! There's great chemistry, and I haven't seen Skid that giddy in quite some time!
Wait this is actually so cool! I've been listening to the glass cannon podcast and watching you for multiple years at this point. A crossover I would never have imagined happening.
I originally discovered the Glass Cannon Network after looking for Cthulhu Actual Plays, because of Seth inspiring me to finally get into Call of Cthulhu. Thrilled to see two favorites teaming up. But we need to know - how many dice can Troy Lavalee fit in HIS mouth?
Oh my god, that whole coroner was just...I was loosing it. I was sure the old man was just going to have a heart attack and die on the street. Spilling the beans, he must have been a serious "I'm way too old for this shit" type. It's weird, this was entertaining as hell to watch, but I'm not sure how much I'd actually enjoy playing in such a wacky, off-the-cuff silliness game. I mean, the overall content is serious, but there's also a lot of silliness out of game that permeates the game "seamlessly". I mean, I'm sure navigating a fire escape with all that camera gear might be kinda tricky.
Seth: I don't have enough good to say about watching you guys play. I do have one small suggestion though, perhaps put the character's name with the player's below the live screen? Thanks for the show guys.
This is absolutely fantastic! This is the equivalent of an NBA all-star game for me. The best guys in the show putting on an amazing performance. Thanks!
I was on the fence for a while but after watching this I ordered every Call of Cthulhu RPG book I could find. Also... why am I not able to order any Valducan RPG books yet? Do you realize the potential? The Vulducan books injected into some hefty Monster Of The Week homebrew has lead to some of the most memorable moments at my gaming table.
I didnt know of glass cannon before this..... they owe ya atleast one sub, and Troy seems an excellent game runner, and I love watching ya get to play.
Damn I don't really like watching sessions, but this was just awsome. You have Seth which just gets you like right away, you have a great scanerio from amazing collection Things We Leave Behind (hope to get more reviews of those scanerios), you have a very well prepare Keeper, and a bunch of very good players (they say x over or under y when saying results which is very helpfull for Keeper, they play of the characters and don't let jokes disturb action, damn they were humble at the begining but they actually do amazing job) it was funny, creepy and intriguing. And Seth does amazing job on character and his quirks 🥰
Hey Seth awesome video huge fan of the channel it’s really cool that you are sorta like dm royalty on RU-vid I’ve discovered you semi recently like the last 3/4 months and have continually binge watched your content. Having watched a healthy chunk of RPG content and guides, really just nerdy/gaming channels in general this channel is by far my favorite everything from the actual advice/review content to the editing and acting you do it’s inspirational. I hope we get to continue to enjoy your content for a long time!
This is the first time i've seen anyone run something from this book other than "ladybug ladybug fly away home" and i feel like that one has given the book a bad rep, this seems more fun and more like the lone gunman in an episode of the x files.
I usually don't watch these kinds of videos, but I gave this one a shot and I absolutely loved it. You guys have fantastic chemistry, it very fun watch you. I'll make sure to tune in live!
Seth, I really enjoy your videos, is there something where you are the GM? I would be more interested in that, for some reason I thought that would be the case from the video title...
As a born and raised Georgia Boy, I'm stealing that character concept and making it my own. He may even be addicted to Coca-Cola, since it was made in Georgia.
As others have already said: this is honestly the BEST tabletop roleplay I've probably ever had the distinct pleasure of witnessing! No personal baggage, no weirdo garbage, just honest roleplaying by very VERY talented guys. Skid Maher and Troy Lavalee could (and should) do professional voice work, but all of the guys just mesh together so we'll. They don't try to compete for personal gain or go on an ego trip- they just have fun. Truly a fantastic experience and I really really REALLY HOPE they do this on a regular basis with this same group. I went to Glass Cannon's channel and could not find these guys, but did find more of the same old woke stuff that has crept in and ruined so many other games... However, I could follow these guys anywhere!
