INTJ Obsession: The THING 

it gets weird intense and unexpected when you are the thing

Intj and I swear my obsession never stops it just changes periodically 😂😂.

Can confirm, whatever the thing is, I will be focused on the thing like a laser.

"Everything is a tool and I decide the rules"... Where's the merch? I want that on a t-shirt.

"I'm okay with this conversation being over." - literally my boyfriend every time I start talking about my Thing.

It’s pretty scary how accurate this is.

The Thing perfectly describes my several-months-long obsession with exploring every possible angle of Subway's $5 Footlong promotion launched in March 2008, including how based on inflation they could now launch a $6.03 campaign, but it doesn't fit as nicely into a jingle. Note that this is different from liking or eating the actual subs. You can usually tell what my Thing is by looking at my open browser and Wikipedia tabs.

It would have been funny if you ran across another INTJ who had his own "thing" box and couldnt talk to about about your "thing" because he had his own "thing" to think about

Ah yes, the freakin' THING! THIS IS IT! I will obsess over one or two things for a year or more, love it and cherish it, then wake up one morning and... the magic is gone. Kind of difficult knowing it's hard for me to like anything for more than three years. I usually keep this thing kind of "secret" such that it isn't the defining cliche of my person, but it will always be in the background of every conversation and will even trickle through. When I find someone who takes the bait, the conversation doesn't quit. (Also, I keep it on the down-low because it's personal to me; I don't want to wear out its name by mentioning it constantly or risk sharing it with someone who doesn't hold it in the same esteem that I do.) My Thing for which there is a multitude of applications? Vampirism, Jung, and music. Yes, that is one thing.

This resonated a lot with me. I just recently got a strong passionate urge to become president of my fraternity after not holding any position before. My fraternity just finished building our new 7 million dollar house and my mind has been fascinated on trying to figure out how to optimally improve the fraternity. It’s essentially all I think about, this is “my thing” and I’ll obsess over it until I conquer it.

Well I wouldn't want to do my people a disservice by *not* telling them about the thing. The thing is just so cool from this angle, and this angle, and this angle. They *need* to know. They just don't *know* they need to know yet.

I'm an INFJ and this reminded me of something that seems related that may be a Ni attribute. I heard it put like this and it has since been my go to explanation. There are people who think inside the box, people who think outside the box, and then people who think about the box. I think about the box. The fact I just figured out this obsession thing lit up my whole brain

"The Thing"...Yes! and Lindsey 'The Thing' is I do the same Thing when I am Interested in something and I love your Thing in a Box representation. Clever Thing you did there. When I am in the grips of "The Thing", I do all of this kind of Thing and I doodle tons and tons of attempts to describe, explain or understand (thinking out loud) my new "Thing". I have grown up and past taping these Things to a wall despite my longing for more Command Strips. And I talk and talk about "The Thing". Once my husband indulged me during a quiet period in the winter and I talked for three days about my "Thing", nonstop until Himself simply wore out. My Thing has always been People. I am fascinated by people. Maybe that is why my second celebrity crush was Spock. I understood his fascination with the Humans around him and I confess to longing for my own Pom Far. One example of my most recent "Thing" two years ago was falling headfirst into the rabbit hole of MBTI. I have not stopped being INT(J)erested in this "Thing" and suspect I will not lose INterest, anytime soon. My very Favorite Thing would be my Business of Ferrets. A group of Ferrets is called a Business and do not call your Ferrets, your little 'Fursuits' or a polite Furry may ask you about your 'Thing'... I have had Six Free Roam, Raw Fed Ferrets who smell like Grape Koolaid because my family would not agree to Seven Ferrets. Puppy pads are not Their Thing. I do lose interest in most "Things" once I have figured that Thing out. This makes me a problem during Game NIght. And often with Salesman or Inauthentic People. ( Game Night and that is a great little movie about people like us). MBTI became like a "permanent thing" for me, something that I always keep in mind 24/7, but recently I was so obsessed with military history like the Sengoku period and the Napoleonic wars that I ALSO tried to connect that to MBTI. As a result I was fascinated by how military strategies and tactics relate to their cognitive functions

I just had a moment with the thing”, “so many opportunities can be applied with the thing”, “wow, this thing just open doors to another thing that I have to either go on a tangent about or shelve so we can get back to the original thing”, “did I mention all 50 functions of this thing?”, “do you have a few hours to talk about the thing with me?”, “this thing is fascinating... “it’s better than paying attention to the fi”... Oh my freaking gosh. I do this so much. My "thing" is value theory. Everytime I'm in a conversation that turns philosophical, theological, political, etc., it always ends up being answered by the Thing.

I've got to admit if someone was showing me an opaque box that you can see through I'd be all over that thing. Your husband is funny. I thoroughly enjoyed "what's that? Oh this?" I do this all the time. For me it's all about understanding the thing and how it could apply to that thing. Once I've fully investigated the thing the knowledge gained gets filed away and I then find a new thing. Only major downside in my opinion is that while I'm thinking of the thing I'm not so open to new things that don't relate to the current thing. Well that and when people give you that look like "this thing again?" Boy that's a lot of "things."

The most concrete example of the most abstract thing.

At first i was like, what is this girl talking about there is no 'The Thing'. Then she started trying to get other people to like the 'The Thing', and I went "Oh no." understanding exactly what "The Thing" was. But I started rolling when she started talking about "The Thing" when no one asked about it. I can admit that I'm quite ashamed of how far I went trying to get people to like my 'The Thing'.

I can totally relate to this. My current thing is my INTJ personality and learning about it. My circle of people get so frustrated when I bring it up because I am always hyper focused on it. I also frequently apply it to what is going on and tell people the connection which they area really starting to hate. But in a few months it will be something else entirely. I have started trying to schedule different hobbies throughout the week on different days to try to prevent my obsessive tenancies and become more well rounded.

My current Things are typing people and learning more about my type and my new boyfriend and also trying to study his type to understand him better. I also excessively rant to him about typing and I can tell he isn't super interested but I can't stop myself. "You are so cute!" and "You are so ISTJ" are basically my new catch phrases. Which is still better than last year when I was obsessed with Astrology and makes more sense than screaming "OMG! You are so Aries!" So at least I'm moving up on my obsessions.

This is very relatable. Especially the part about studying the thing until you master it and understand it fully. That's how I study philosophy and how I practice law. When I'm researching law that I need to argue in a case, I read all the cases explaining the law and I play out scenarios in my head on how I can use the thing I learned in different ways in the courtroom.

I've been reading about MBTI like 6 hours per day, think in it 24 hours, turn my dad crazy with this topic everyday, and this began in last year October. Yesterday I used to think I was an INTP, I was really obsessed with this idea despite I always felt the correct answer was INTJ. And right now I'm feeding «the thing».

I really hate being super excited and all about something for years and having no one meaningful who is either able or willing to talk about it with me. I realized years ago that some things are only special for me and I only have myself and relevant data to collect to soothe such obsessions. It can be rather lonely and discouraging but you can't just not learn everything about "the thing" and want to share as much of it as you can with everyone.

I think this is my personality type? At least when I take those online Personality Test I get this type 70% of the time. And I get little obsessions with “things”. For instance, I was utterly in love with A-bikes, Brompton bikes, & my most favourite of all. The Mitochondria!!!! LOVE that little ATP making “bug” 😍

This is super relatable. This also reminds me of a funny story of my first words as a baby, after crawling into my mom's room, I had picked up a box and asked her "What's this?" She said "a box" and I said "oh" and crawled out. I realize now that she really should've said, "The thing."

I can't even pretend I don't have a thing. I have far too many reminders in front of me. It's more like I have 1 big thing, then some smaller things as well, but the smaller things don't compare to the big thing. Wow, I've had a thing all my life! Not always the same thing, but absolutely, it invades every pore of my being until it's at a point where I can learn no more about it! I don't tend to obsess around others, in my school days I quickly learned that few people care about my thing except me. I also find things help me ignore parts of my life that are perhaps not positive or that I would like to be different. If I don't have a thing, those parts of life become the thing...an INTP freind pointed that out, it was quite a revelation. I have one forever thing which is Jujutsu - as the learning potential is infinite, and I can never be perfect at it, it has never lost my interest in almost 30 years and is almost always somewhere in my thoughts.

I was very passionate about prussian military history in the 18. & 19. Century for the past 4 years, atm I am obsessed with the french language until the point that I annoy my surroundings with it (it's rly fascinating to see the structure of a language! that's why I also learned latin, to understand other european languages better!)...and a couple of years ago i was really into K-Pop...and that for 3 years straight!! does that count aswell? especially the last obsession? :'D

I was and still kind of am obsessed with radioactive stuff and everyone got annoyed when I have been talking about the same thing for longer than a year. But I was also obsessed with other stuff at the same time and my whole day revolves around researching and learning more about the particular subject but I end up ignoring things that I do not find important.

Lol, so relatable. I try telling people about the thing, or something I really care about (usually a concept) and they just don't care. It's so frustrating and then I feel a little defeated. Until I use the thing for something unexpected and then people are all like "how did you do that!" And then comes out the smug shrug and the sarcastic comments about how they should have paid attention to the thing I was showing them.
