Into Alaska - We Lost Our Canoe on a Remote River | 10 Days Family Camping in Alaskan & BC Wild -E.8
I woke up on the morning of day 1 to find out canoe gone. The night before we’d dealt with a once in a lifetime windstorm and it was all we could to secure our tent down in the gale force wind. Our canoe was pulled well up on the beach and tied off to a log that was embedded in the sad but the wind was so strong it blew the loop of the rope off of the end of the log and continued blowing the canoe all the way into a tributary creek that carried the canoe into the Stikine River.
I went to find it and was lucky to have had some help from a local in a power boat.
With a significant chunk of time out of our day, we finally got onto the river. Soon, we spotted several goats up along a steep cliff that rose out of the river and we got a great look at them with our binoculars as we took our time drifting past.
After a few miles we decided to make camp a little earlier and pulled over at a nice spot that looked like it had been used as a salmon netting spot by local Tahltan indigenous people. I set up a sturdy tarp rig and cut some wood to make a fire. Soon we got food going and enjoyed a nice meal, using a make shift table that had been built into one of the trees.

Really you have no choice but to look for it, right? I am wondering...in the future could you add a "beacon" or gps locator to your canoe? Love the "bushcrafter ugly stik"...good work Jim!

It never fails to impress me how Tori deals with situations that a lot of women would freak out over. Maybe you edited out all the swearing and shouting?? but she deserves huge respect for all she does. Two little boys, a dog, and dads gone walk about looking for a lost canoe. Saved by the never ending goodness of fellow Canadians, what's not to love about this adventure? High fives Baird's YEAAAHH !!!

So good of the guy to go looking for your canoe & bring it back on his boat. It had to be scary waking up & finding it gone. Huddy dumping the trail mix & not wanting to sit in the canoe because there was dirt on the floor when he just previously had put gravel all over himself & was eating it. Kids. You & Tori are great parents & handled it all so well. Hope you cuight some fish with your hand made rod. My favorite part was Huddy eating gravel. Good fiber :)

I have been in a tent in high winds several different times, once on an open plain with no indication high wind was coming and nothing to hold the tent down and once in a forest where you could hear the trees cracking around you and the next day hiking was blow down city. I have been kayaking a river system and the water rose 18 to 24 inches overnight. A new take out had to be created. Life in the outdoors is great and l am also grateful for every time l come home safe to do it again!!!😅

Jim, half a century ago I was a camp counselor for Camp Tamarack, in the lower peninsula of MI- and we were taking kids on a 5-day trip down the Au Sable river- a generally quite easy float. One night we camped at the top of a bank that was maybe 50 feet above the river. We had sent campers to find rocks for a fire pit/circle. One came back with a rock that was too large for use, so we told him we could not use it. He threw it over the bank- where it proceeded to hit the middle of one our canoes and burst a 2-foot hole in it. No cell phones then- we had to use a T with the bad canoe, paddle it to some take-out point, hike to find someone who would let us use their phone and then wait for the camp to send a replacement- all of which took around 7 hours... fun times! This reminded me of that time.

Reminds me of a remote kayak trip where the wind whipped up as I was staking my tent and blew my tent into the bay. We watched my tent fully assembled float/blow across the bay to the far shore. After much running I was able to retrieve the tent tangled in alder bushes. A few abrasions on the tent fly was the extent of the damage. That was day one. No time for would’ve should’ve could’ve. I appreciate that you can soldier on without crippling self recriminations. You guys rock!!!

You can't cry over spilled milk, what is done is done. It wasn't planned, and you two had a very healthy attitude over the initial loss of the canoe and equipment. My reaction would be Chit, chit, chit and have anxiety for us, and just pray we find it. Nothing more one can do. No sense to react any less or more than what we saw in this video. Oh man, it was pretty bad. Wade said it was a once in fifty years storm and some others we know in Telegraph said it was a once in a lifetime wind storm. The super strong winds stopped but things got really really really rainy haha. Not super uncommon for the area but you could paddle the river 10 times and not have that much rain. Still love the area a the river of course though.

This is how most experienced adventurers find themselves in a hard spot. When it's only you to think about, things go smoothly but when you have to think for someone else, this is how things will slip by. You both are truly inspiring traveling with two children and a dog. A few years ago I started camping and hiking while rasing a grandson. I don't get to experience anything of i don't take him with and I use to have a dog, so I understand the challenges. Anyhow you both are awesome parents... Keep exploring with them babies 🤩

Wow, what a situation. Ya'll handled it well. What a Blessing it was to get your boat back. Reminds me very well of a similar situation I had once. In short, we ripped one side of our conoe completely apart. Stiched it back together with nylon cord, epoxy/rags, and a Willow tree branch about the size of that rod you made for an new gunwale. Lost half a day was all.

Huddy is going to be a great little big brother to Wesley. With his little crying voice he was expressing his concern for Wes. Oh My God that was such a beautiful moment for me . Safe travels Baird Tribe.

He is such a sweet boy with Wesley but sometimes he can be a bit mean too. Once he’s old enough to understand I’m sure he’ll be the best team mate for Wesley.

Hiya Both, Well! Wasn't that something? So glad u were all safe, happy to see the kindness of Miles and the canoe back. You Both show what can be done with calmness, acting instead of reacting and upsetting the kids a d not getting anywhere.Very good team work; and to see affection between u both too, plus brilliant skills. My fav bits were; Jim & Tori paddling the canoe together, seeing uses for the knives and gun, Hudson singing on his own & being free under supervision around the camp, Wesley being relaxed and going with the flow and the amazing fishing rod. Tori being a lovely Mother & Jim such a kind Father. I'm so impressed by you Both. Thank-you for all the extra hard work filming too. Just WOW❣️
