This was from a work of fiction from the series posted on r/nosleep by an author under the pseudonym "searchandrescuewoods". In other words, it didn't actually happen, but it was a great story I'll certainly grant you that.

What about that boy who returned and remember some really strange things. He was locked up in a cage underground but could see the light from outside at the door. There were dusty weapons and "human robots". A woman came, looking exactly like his grandma, but it wasn't her. She asked him to poop on he sticky paper (that's what he said), but he didnt had to poop , so she became aggressive. Later the 'real' grandma told police she was camping at the exact same spot where the boy went missing, one week ago. In the middle of the night she woke up from a stitching in her neck and it was a little bit bloody.

***** Exactly. Every point he makes he declares as "strange" when in fact it is so entirely common that those are the very things we use to find lost/missing people. Any law enforcement officer knows that missing person cases are entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, which is a computerized index of criminal justice information. All searches are law enforcement investigations. The Center for Lost and Missing Children has a database. There is the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, the Doe Network, the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the UnClaimed Persons database, and Interpol has an international database for Missing Persons and Unidentified Bodies. Not to mention the International Search and Rescue Incident Database (ISRID) actively compiled by Robert Koester, from which we have the Lost Person Behavior profiles that are the cornerstone of modern probability-based search methods. This is even offered as a freakin’ app by none other than the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). But Paulides will have people believe that there are no databases that track missing people. He says search dogs stop in the middle of a search, and that’s “strange, dogs don’t do that!”…Well, as a K9 handler and trainer for the last 48 years I can think of many reasons why this would be COMMON behavior; 1- Poor breeding; 2- Poor training; 3- Poor handling; 4- Poor conditions; 5- Using a dog trained in the wrong type of search for the environment; 6- Deploying the K9 team at the wrong time of day; 7- Deploying the K9 team in the wrong sector; 8- Track scent contamination (usually by other searchers); 9- Or simply losing the scent - see below In K9 tracking training the first challenge the dog is given is “the turn”. A track is laid with a right angle turn. The dog usually tracks beyond the turn, losing the scent, then is taught to work in a circle until it reacquires the scent in the new direction. This is common and basic dog handling. In the wilderness a common behavior of people when they first realize their lost is to ‘route sample’ in order to reorient themselves. They’ll stop and retrace their steps in the opposite direction. Then stop and head in a different direction for a short while, then turn around and retrace their steps again. Then head off in another direction, then return again…all in hopes of finding something recognizable on the trail. A wilderness K9 tracker knows this is common behavior, and thus there is absolutely nothing surprising if a dog suddenly loses a scent on a trail. A well-trained dog will automatically want to circle, and the handler will encourage retracing the track until the scent is reacquired (in addition to notifying Incident Command/Search Operations of the location so that they can accurately update their Probability of Area - Shift calculations). Those experienced in Search and Rescue and K9 handling know this stuff and only the ignorant or intentionally deceptive would claim this behavior is “strange”. Then you consider his retelling of the story of how he was contacted by park rangers…I heard the story three times in three videos and it changed every time. I think the one that rings most true is: he was at a park when there was an active search ongoing, he left the scene and returned to his motel room, and then the rangers knocked on his door wanting to question him. THAT sounds right. I can also understand why law enforcement would be reluctant to give out information about a search to one of their suspects, even going so far as to charge him exorbitant amounts of money for data that is given out freely. If you are interested in Search and Rescue, I would suggest beginning with the industry standard training materials as authored by the likes of William Syrotuck (Analysis of Lost Person Behavior), Robert Koester (Lost Person Behavior), the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR, Fundamentals of Search and Rescue, Search Management), among others. Although not a favorite of mine for many reasons, a book by Christopher Young and John Wehbring titled Urban Search describes missing person incidents from a law enforcement perspective, which clearly points out the fact that EVERY missing person is entered into a national database, whether they are in the city or a National Park. Robert Koester’s work is a continuation of lost person study that has been ongoing for many decades now. Lost Person Behavior profiling is a based on the detailed analysis of well over 50,000 searches. This data is gathered and submitted by law enforcement agencies around the world, including those affiliated with the NPS. There are many reasons people go missing (all of them known), and many reasons people are or are not found (also known). To infer alien abductions, bigfoot, pedophile rings, et al, takes a sober and objective consideration of all the facts and available data. If someone wants to make the claim that a lost or missing persons case is ‘strange’, I suppose they have that right. But an experienced, educated, fact-based study will seldom arrive at the same conclusion. A magician’s trick only seems strange and magical from the perspective of those who do not know the trick, from the perspective of those who do, the ‘strange’ is entirely common. As far as the shedding of clothing is concerned, this is also extremely common occurrence. It is a result of a combination of wear and tear, panic, and hypothermia. Shoes can catch on debris (think branches) and get yanked off. Shoe laces can loosen, shoes fall off, and the person be too exhausted or hypothermic to notice or care. Panic causes people’s core temp to rise initially so they shed their outer layer, then drop and lose that article of clothing as they struggle to find their way. Consider this - panic even causes scuba divers to pull their regulators out of their mouths, resulting in their death by drowning (strange yes, but an entirely common human behavior). In the wilderness panic can set in at any time and severely limit a person’s ability for rational thought. Search RU-vid for the video of the family that got “lost” in a corn maze and called 911 to be rescued. Strange? Maybe, but common. Hypothermia is a progressive condition where blood is increasingly restricted from flowing to the extremities in order to protect the vital organs. Less blood flow to the brain means less oxygen, resulting in slow muddled thinking, “strange” behavior such as irrational decision making, and memory loss. Hypothermic individuals also reach a point when their extreme cold makes them think their body feels hot, so they naturally take their clothes off even though they’re freezing to death. It may sound like strange behavior, but it is entirely common. So common, in fact, that searching for clues like discarded clothing is something that EVERY search team does to help us locate lost subjects. If a child goes missing and is not found, the parents are certainly filled with grief, bewilderment and doubt. They have a lot of questions and are not expected to know the answers like a professional in the field would. So naturally they may ask someone claiming to be an “expert” to explain these “strange” things. Paulides should have given the answers I just gave, or replied “I have no clue, I’m not an expert. I’ll help put you in touch with people who are qualified to speak to your concerns”. Instead, he professes to be an expert. Yet he is making so many false claims that it’s staggering, such as: a lack of data, searches not being tracked, disappearances not being studied, inventing ‘profiling’ that never existed before, dog’s stopping in the middle of tracks, children walking “farther than a child can”, people found missing clothing, people found in water, and on and on. Anyone with the most basic experience in law enforcement, search and rescue, K9 handling and training, and/or public safety research knows that his claims are false. The only question that remains is: why is he making these false claims? He seems to be preying on people’s ignorance. I really don’t care if he is conning people into buying a product. I do care that he is making false claims about REAL PEOPLE, some of whom have lost loved ones permanently. Do falsehoods help them endure their grief and lessen their pain, or is he making it worse because he is either ignorant or a fraud? Perhaps he should consider that causing another’s pain and suffering by making false claims is actionable; the day could come when he has to answer for his behavior in civil court. Hell, since I have been called as an expert witness more than once, I will be happy to explain the difference between “strange” and “common” to a jury.

***** Yep. Of all the available knowledge and experience I can rattle off the top of my head, Paulides concludes things are "strange" "unexplainable". There are three types of search K9’s: Law Enforcement, Air Scent, and Sure Trackers. A Law Enforcement K9 learns to identify the scent of fear pheromones that a fleeing suspected criminal exudes. Just as we can differentiate someone wearing cologne in a group of people that are not, LEO K9’s can distinguish between a scared person and non-criminals. LEO K9’s that aren’t trained in any other type of scent discrimination are terrible at Search and Rescue, simply because if “fear” is experienced at all (many profile types do not), it doesn’t become a factor in the track until after the person realizes they are lost (we don’t start “lost”, it is how we end up). Air Scent dogs are trained to detect the scent of any human in a specific area or environment. Whether in a field, stand of trees or a collapsed building, the dog simply lets you know that someone is or was there when they detect the scent of humans in the air. If Ground search or Hasty search teams have already been in an area, Air Scent dogs cannot tell the difference between them and the missing subject; people are people. Sure Trackers these days are almost exclusively Bloodhounds, although German Shepherds dogs are being trained this way as well. They are trained in ‘scent discrimination’; to them, every human has a unique smell (think people wearing different colognes). At the start of a search they are given a “scent article” which is a piece of fabric that the missing subject has worn or slept on, that hasn’t been contaminated by another person’s scent. Then they follow that specific scent left on the ground and in the air left by the missing subject. Scent discrimination dogs are the best type of K9 to deploy for SAR; unfortunately they are not always available, neither are scent articles. Once you have the proper K9 tracking the correct scent in the appropriate area, then you have to contend with the changing weather conditions because wind, thermals, humidity, and precipitation will all affect scent dispersion and detection. All of this is assuming: the dogs have been bred for and demonstrated the prerequisite drive, qualities and capabilities; have been successfully trained with detailed logs; and have trained and experienced handlers. Lastly, the best dog in the world can’t locate a missing subject if the subject isn’t in the sector being searched. Thus, for Search Managers it’s a race against time deploying the best detectors available in the highest probability locations in descending priority. Yes, there are many, many reasons why deploying a random “K9” may not result in locating a lost/missing subject. It certainly isn’t “strange”, it is entirely common.

Radio Yes, the things that Paulides claims 'have no reasonable explanation' are not only explainable, but so common that they are used to find lost/missing people quicker (and thus hopefully still alive) and are readily recognized as such by people with experience in the field of missing persons. People also underestimate how quickly you can panic and do bizarre things when you're disoriented. Paulides gets away with it because the vast majority of listeners have no SAR experience.

I think that the types of outliers are not nearly as important that nearly every regional outbreak has outliers in the first place. Why they are the way they are is secondary. But the general pattern tells us something important even if all the specific details may not.

Yes, they tell us something: they tell us that a lot of people on the Internet want to believe paranormal conspiracy theories. That's about it. To start with, this is data that was collected 2nd hand at best, then it is passed through a filter to make sure it fits "the pattern". With millions of people visiting the outdoors each year and some of them disappearing, it would be surprising if there were NOT cases in which the key clues as to what actually happened were overlooked or destroyed, whether accidentally or intentionally. It would only be surprising if there were NO mysterious disappearances. Paulides put these stories through a filter, so of course those that pass through the filter bear an ominous resemblance to each other. Spriggs used the results Paulides obtained as the starting point for his further analysis, which in turn has a very low threshold for calling something a "pattern". The result is extremely unconvincing. Remember the Bible Code? It's hard not to see patterns even when the patterns are not real, particularly if they are cool or exciting or validate your world view. But not all of them are real. Dena Redford An apt question. For me it brings to mind what, in my estimation, is the sort of "linguistic crux" of the issue. Of *all* issues, really. When we use the words "natural" and "supernatural," what do we really mean? They seem like opposites, right? Nah... They're just positions on a spectrum. They might seem quite far apart at the moment, but consider this: What we currently define as natural is demonstrably different now compared to what it was in other periods of time.
