Tim ! I love every video you have done. It brings back 22 years of great memories I have of being a merchant marine under navel commission. And I spent 3 years on a 36 ft boat I built from scratch then sailed around the world by myself. So I'm fond of your paquita channel too. Let you company know that by allowing you to RU-vid you're work is the very best type of PR They could get. The world is a better place because of people like you.

In those three years my take away is....good lord I was nuts!!. But it also taught me to fear anything is self induced, and in summer the artic ice bergs has colors of blue that Crayola can't make. And the north sea will pound you 3 inches shorter and leave your gizzard in your neck while rolling off the back of 30 footers . Spookiest place Antarctica. China, Japan. Malaysia has gorgeous fjords to explore. At age 6 I read Jules Verne 20,000 leagues. Then a year later J.R.R Tolkien's the hobbit and lord of the rings. So through my life those stories have been my driving force and So my own adventures began. I love boats and I love water and nature both human and in the wild. Live life because everyday really is an adventure! Oh! Steer clear of the Pacific patch 3 weeks not a puff of wind ,closest I came to loosing my marbles. 😂

We pulled into Charlotte Amalie on the USS Kamehameha SSBN-642, one of the Polaris middle subs, in 1979 or so. We drew too much water and had to anchor out. Had a fleet of local boats come out to ferry us to shore for liberty but the swells were high that day and a glass bottom boat sprung a leak when they were pulled up next to us after banging against our HY-80 hull. We heard they sank at the pier later!

Wow. Rain visibility shifting wind that’s a lot. Tim, I’ve been watching most of the older videos so when I clicked on this one the perspective was so different. I watched the Opening again and realized your drone caught the tug position to the barge beautifully. Such a pretty night shot. Anyway, I guess my point is I didn’t know how many different positions from a barge a tug can tow. Front and back yes. This is towing alongside it wow!!!

Hey Capt. Great when you make a plan, and it works. Between construction jobs I did a spot of transport management on The Spy Who Loved Me, Bond Film. Headed a convoy from London to Venice. Met up with an Italian convoy and boarded a freight ferry. Arriving at the port of Alexandrea the ferry needed to be stern on, but the tug captain tried pushing her side to. This ended up with the ferry doing a 360 before docking. The tug was so old oil was coming out of the exhaust and a gutter system was catching it and piping the oil into a drum, maybe for reuse??????????? Lots more happened on that trip, but no rain. Stay safe out there and tell the crew great job.

Was near your old haunt last week, there was something tied up at Pier 88, speaking of cruise ships but this one had missile launchers, a well deck and a bunch of helicopters- the USS Arlington. I know its not a regular thing for navy ships to be docked at the MCT but with fleet week and such it happens; I won't ask if you've done it lest you lose plausible deniability🤫, but do they bunker commercially or run to Earle or just have plenty of fuel to make their next port or UnRep if they're deploying? #cuoto Oh and if you have any second thoughts about the move, its dropping into the 20s tonight so enjoy the warm rain...

A question. It may be a touchy topic and feel free to say no comment. Is your vessel a “Jones Act” vessel? What are your thoughts on the elimination of the “Jones Act”?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea Год назад
Not a touchy subject for me at all. Infact I love talking about the Jones Act because most people don't know anything about it. Yes. Of course the boat I work on is a a Jones Act vessel. The Jones Act is very big, complicated and old. But most people only know about section 27 which deals with interstate commerce. It is extremely vital for our country's defence and also keeps goods moving. For example, if you look at the availability of goods in other non Jones Act islands in the Caribbean, you will find less variety and products and all at a higher price. (Mike drop). This is because American companies like Tote and Crowley have contracts to bring good to PR even at the expense of shipping. Without the Jones Act, foreign companies would bring goods until they got a better deal somewhere else. Then there is the national security part. In times of war, a nation needs to have 80 to 90 percent of it's personnel and equipment in logistics (ask Russia if they wish they new that). We can't move munitions and equipment around the world to goto war if we do not have our own fleets and seaman and naval architects and skilled shipyard workers and builders. We can not count in another country to move our weapons of war if they are not wanting to be involved with the military action. The argument that things cost more in PR because of the Jones Act is false and ridiculous. It's an island. Good need to get shipped there. And for the mislead, foreign ships can and do call on PR every day! The Jones Act (section 27) only refers to interstate commerce - loading in one US port and going to another. And by the way, this is not unique to the USA. Almost every country with a merchant fleet has a similar law. The Jones Act is an old law, and like many of the laws on our books, could benefit from being brought up to date. My friend Sal from RU-vid channel "What's going on in shipping" makes a very very good case for updating the Jones Act to deal with the fact that the US fleet does not have one LNG ship to move our plentiful LNG to the North East. (Fun fact: the US today is the world's largest producer of LNG on the planet). The Jones Act has been used by many as a scape goat to blames problems on and it is so big and complicated that there are few that understand that it has nothing to do with the problems it is blamed for. I do have a dog in this fight, so take that as you will. Without the Jones Act, my job and all other maritime jobs would be replaced by foreign nations working for about %10 of what we make. They would not have the same vested interest in protecting the environment or the country the we do, and they would take their wages and spend them at home where our wages (for the most part) go back into our economy (we buy things, go out to eat and the money continues to circulate). This is just me rambling on. If you want to know more, goto Sal's channel and tell him I sent you. CUOTO

@@TimBatSea This a paragraph from G Captain. The order for two container ships. One built in the USA and an order for South Korea. The price tag is astronomical and somebody has to pay the difference. Who pays? The end user? That is unsustainable to cost $100,000 a TEU to ship between American ports. So I see no way to afford that except to pass the cost down to the end user. I agree, in theory, about a maritime shipping system for America. However only a minuscule of people benefit from the Jones Act as regards their pay. Most lines the pockets of unions. Just my thoughts. But you have to admit the cost of a tiny container vessel is insane. Huge Pricetags The VT Halter Marine deal was announced on Sunday, just days after the American containership company Matson awarded Halter Marine’s rival, Philly Shipyard, a billion-dollar order for three small 3,600 TEU Jones Act ships, a new record-setting price. To put the price difference in perspective Maersk recently ordered six of the world’s most advanced methanol-powered containerships in South Korea for $1.14 billion but those ships carry 17,000 TEU containers for a per TEU price of $11,176. The simpler ships Matson is building in Philadelphia will cost an eye-watering $92,592 per TEU.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea Год назад
@@wayneinnc5379 Ships are expensive and buying things produced in Asia are cheaper. Unions in coastwise shipping (333 and local 25) are barely hanging on to life and although I am proud of the money I make, the fact that our industry can't fill it's requirements should suggest that we are far from being over paid. I am sure we can go back and forth like this forever, but I thought you wanted to ask my opinion on the Jones Act. But it sounds like you already have your opinion. One only needs to look at countries or Islands that do not have the Jones Act or something like it and see how that has worked for them. (And don't forget Europe). CUOTO

When you anchor…is that the main anchor off the tug or does the barge have is own anchor system to accommodate its weight plus tug together? I see lines coming off the front of the tug in the drone video. What is the limits of wind/swell when still ok to anchor vs. choosing to hold out under power? Obviously situational but I’m sure you have some numbers when you choose. Appreciate your feedback on that. Love the detailed explanations in videos.

Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. The barge, being much bigger, has a huge anchor and holds both of us well. While loaded and with a good bottom, we are usually good in almost anything. But a lite barge is a different situation .There is so much windage on the barge and with the changes in wind direction, things can get bad quickly.
