On this day in 1991, President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev was welcomed to London, where he was attending the G7 summit as a guest. The Soviet premier and his wife, Raisa Gorbachev, were first welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace. Afterwards, Gorbachev was taken to 10 Downing Street for a diplomatic luncheon with Prime Minister John Major, his wife Norma Major, and guests including former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Gorbachev was then whisked away to the Houses of Parliament, where people thronged to get close to the leader of the USSR as he sipped tea and mingled with MPs including Speaker of the House Bernard Weatherill. To end the day, the Majors accompanied the Gorbachevs to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, where Gorbachev was greeted with a standing ovation.

And to think that when this happened I was a 19 and genuinely believed the common trope then that this was somehow the "end of history" (whatever that means). We really thought everything was fixed and a golden age had just begun. Six months later, Gorby was gone and it had all fallen apart (again). Ten years later, in 2001, two days after my 29th birthday, the real shape of things to come began with horror in New York. We've never recovered from that, and never will. Now, we're on the brink (again).

Protocol. She might have accidentally criticized British tea and triggered World War 3.

I’ve lived from cruchev, sp. on & Gorbachov seemed the most likeable Russian leader & finally did break down the Wall. I think his wife had the reputation of being anti-West not, he. Thanks for these surprise videos, I love seeing, Queen. It’s as though, I need to be weaned from her loss not abruptly taken away. Please, keep the gems coming, you Guys are brilliant! 👑💍💎

It's appalling to see Gorbachev playing to the public support in London streets while his country was on fire. Soviet economic collapse was causing immense hardship to the people at that time. This guy was prioritising his own personal fame over his country's stability.

Soviet Russia was ruined by Authoritarian officials and budget. However Corbachev didn´t want to fix that. He wanted to use the problems to open access to Russian markets for the Western elite. Do you have a better theory?

real story is way more interesting if you start analysing things. Gorbachev was coming to London for instruction to ruin USSR and all big money was coming to London after that. He got very big pay and Nobel prize. Elcin was continuing his job and coming for instruction to Washington. After Putin came, West started to see Russia as threat after some time, and Queen was never to see him again, nor he was coming to London or Washington.
