Into the Woods Act I Part 1 

We're doing this as our spring musical, and I'm Jack's Mom and the Witch's understudy. SO MUCH FUN!

I have never seen this musical before so this is the only way I can see this, so thank you for posting!

I saw it in March 1988 with the original cast except Bernadette Peters had already left. It is interesting for me with Joy Franz. The night I saw it she played the stepmother more as befuddled as the whole idea of thinking Cinderella would ever go had never entered her mind. It took her a moment to figure out what the hell Cinderella was talking about. When Stepmother realized it was THE KING'S FESTIVAL, it was in absolute shock and her daughters were already rubbing it in Cinderella's face as she did as well. I got a kick how Jack (Ben Wright) toward over his mother and yet cringed each time his mother became exhausted with him and pinched his ear. Joanna Gleason was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! Her comic timing was priceless. She absolutely deserved to win the Tony that year. :)

God. I have callbacks for the Witch and Little Red tomorrow. I'm kind of freaking out! GAH!

"And a few of those pies!" Just make sure they're not meat pies, Red...remember what happened with the meat pies in another Sondheim show!

i got to be the bakers wife in 7th grade when my school did it. id love to do it again and be the witch! i love this show. the music is amazing

My high school did this show back in April and May and I was one of the seven dwarfs. It was one of the best shows that my school had put on and this is one of the best musicals out there today.

i saw this in theatre and i love the witches voice and it is the best musical EVER the only one i acualy like.

Damn it, this play had BETTER still be available when I get into Hollywood. This movie is MINE to direct! >:D

I've never seen it either, but sometimes just reading the summary of a musical (or even the whole libretto) and listening to the songs is enough to do it for me.

Well, Jekyll and Hyde would still be played by the same actor, but the effects to differentiating the characters would be much more impressive than just flipping a hairpiece (like grudgier makeup on Hyde). The two person thing for Confrontation would work extremely well for film, a internal fight between Jekyll and Hyde taken out for us to see. Hope the Confrontation is what you mean for Jekyll and Hyde as two people.

Actually, it's Little Red Riding Hood, and she's played by Danielle Ferland. As far as I know, she was about sixteen years old in this video.

Like what Tim Burton did with Sweeney Todd, I imagine doing a lot of trimming to better suit the story. Songs like the Witch's first song and "Agony" are a must, but most of the commentary would probably be right out. :P (And portraying Jekyll & Hyde as two different people would be awesome. (No hair-flipping) *lol*)

I don't think Into The Woods can be filmed properly. There are too many theatricalities that would look fake on film and the beginning won't work as good because it could require spilt screen. I am planning on going into film, too, but there are some things that cannot be adapted into film well, like this lovely musical.

The Brother's Grimm didnt mention that Riding Hood likes to steal biscuits and stuff

Well, good luck to you. I hope to do something with Wicked or Jekyll & Hyde (particularly Confrontation-because the head and hair-flipping looks kinda hokey on film, so there's got to be a better way, like maybe Jekyll and Hyde become two people and better make up for Hyde). As much as I like Sondheim, I just don't think some of his musicals would work well on the silver screen, (Sunday in the Park with George is another Sondheim gem, but it's not suited for cinema).

Into the Woods Jr. normally cuts the second act. I guess grown-ups feel that learning the true message of the play would be too traumatic for the kiddies...that says enough right there.

Have you checked out Assassins? It's currently my favorite Sondheim. This is a close #2.

what do you mean? I think they sing/act very well. and even if it doesn't appear that way to your finely tuned ear/eye, then seeing as the plot puosely kindo of corny, maybey it was on purpose?
