Thank you so much for sharing Nik!🙏🏼As you shared other ways to make paste, I was warmly reminded of my grandmother who would make me paste with water and flower for my elementary school projects because we had no other glue. So cool! I will be connecting with my long gone grandmother, who my was saving Grace when my mother was emotionally unavailable. ❤ Also, had to laugh, I am not alone in my new club, “don’t remember where I put , for instance, book covers for a book I started to make?😅😘

I've watched half a dozen tutorials on paste papers this evening (I haven't made any in 25 years, when I was a bookbinder's apprentice), and I must say, yours are the loveliest I've seen. I've never thought much of the art & craft of paste papers, but yours are positively inspirational.

When I saw the silicone mat I was certain you were gonna use it to make the designs on it and then take the paper and make monoprints. It may help with making sure the paper doesn’t get ripped when it is so wet. It can also provide you with crisper edges in the designs since the silicone doesn’t absorb any paint. See how that works. I am gonna try this as soon as I get myself the wheat paste. This looks like something I may even do with my students in class. I didn’t know wheat paste works this way.

Great job! I have done both - marbling and paste paper. Paste paper is my fave! Different pastes have different effects. Don’t be afraid to add things like glitter or iridescent acrylic! Let your imagination take you! It is so much fun! My favorite paste is methyl cellulose but is a little more difficult (harder to find0 than wheat paste or wallpaper paste, but it is archival, if that is a requirement..... just different effects and continues the fun. Again, thanks for doing his and bringing more people to this fantastic fun!

I think I’d use something like heavy card stock to back the paper or a cookie sheet covered in plastic paper or parchment etc so you don’t mess up the tray. But just until dry so when you move the papers they don’t tear being so wet and fragile.

Amazing, as usual. Could you put a piece of cling wrap under the paper to make it easier to move? Or would it be too difficult to get it smooth? Maybe wax paper or baking parchment?
@NiktheBooksmith
@NiktheBooksmith 4 года назад
Howdy! So the trouble with wax or parchment paper is that it will wrinkle up when wet, so it would make a bumpy mess while you're trying to brush out the paint or comb patterns. The cling wrap would probably work, if it didn't take forever to get it all smooth. But, I hate to waste that much plastic, so I just use a bowl of warm, soapy water and wipe it down after I remove the paper. It takes just a few seconds =)

This is really cool. I’m wondering what the purpose is of spraying it with water first is? Maybe to thin it out more? Have you experimented without spraying a page? I’m just worried about ripping the paper when it’s wet.
@NiktheBooksmith
@NiktheBooksmith 4 года назад
morning Brittany! When the paper is saturated, less of the paint soaks into the fibers so that it will leave a better pattern underneath when you comb/fingerpaint/etc. through the paint layer.

Love it, except for the plastic waste. Honestly, we (me included!!) crafters and painters need to do better. The papers are awesome though and the process looks like a lot of fun. Maybe mixing the paints in an old muffin tray is an idea? Especially one of those sillicone ones? That would be easy to clean, no? Oh, and what if you used a squeegee to spread the paints?
@NiktheBooksmith
@NiktheBooksmith 4 года назад
Good morning! These cups rinse out really nicely. I love the silicone muffin tray, that's genius! I could also set the cups into the tray for more stability, too. As for the squeegee, I tried a silicone dough scraper, but it took too much paint off the surface. The paint brush also rinses out easily and does a better job for me at spreading the paint arounbd =)
