When people get into Eurorack, it's natural for them to be a bit worried about the whole power situation. Often, modules aren't really clear on how things get plugged in, and Modulargrid scares people with how much power their rack is going to draw - so let's spend a few minutes actually digging into Eurorack power and see what's what. I might even plug in a module backward just to show what happens!
I have another video about making your own power cables, and that's available here: • Make your own Eurorack...
As always, I have all the slides available online here: bit.ly/eurorackpower
If you enjoyed the background music in this video, you can hear more on my music channel, Naramata Modular. • Naramata, "+/- 12" - R...

Thanks! Best and shortest video explanation I’ve found mounting my first module to the case 😊

Thank you so so much for this video! I have been trying to build my own modules, and trying to find information on what the power headers are has been not very easy! Great video.

A worthy “go to “ share for anyone who asks. I’m lucky that my magic smoke lesson was just a buffered mult. -The smell (of dread).✌️

The only advantage of an unshrouded bus board I can think of is the connectors are easier to pull off. I've experienced quite a bit of finger pain trying to winkle the low-profile connectors out of a shrouded socket. It's the Eurorack equivalent of stepping on Legos. Shrouded headers are not a foolproof anti-reverse protection either. The only module I ever plugged in backwards was an Evaton CLX in my Pittsburgh case, which has shrouded headers. Evaton included a cable with gray connectors that DID NOT HAVE A KEY RIDGE on them, meaning it would fit into the shrouded header either way. I did not notice this, and I plugged the module in without looking because "it's shrouded headers, I'm good." (Having the "safety feature" made me careless. In my Doepfer and Trogotronic cases, both of which have naked pins, I _always_ double check.) The CLX was plugged in wrong for several sessions. Everything else was working fine and CLX has no lights on it so I didn't know it was messed up, and it wasn't a module I use a lot so it sat there for a while with its power upside down.. Only when I patched it to another module did I get any indication that something was wrong. Don't remember exactly what happened but I could tell right away something wasn't right so I shut it down and opened the case. The crazy thing is, nothing seemed to be damaged and after correcting the power alignment the CLX worked fine.

That was nice, thank you :) What about plugging / unplugging while the power still runs through the rack? I have heard some don't worry and some do because for some modules it is important which pins connect first..

I would avoid it just out of an abundance of caution. What you describe is a possibility, so is accidentally seating the cable wrong (I will plug i in off to the side sometimes), which would leave live pins exposed. Also some digitial modules might not like having intermittent power flickered on and off as you're working the power header down.

Okay. I’m beginning to think about relaxing about power. Here’s a question: is it max one power supply per busboard? What would happen if I plugged two powersupplies into one busboard?
@SoundVoltage
@SoundVoltage Год назад
I believe that if you were to connect the two power supplies in series, you would end up with double the voltage, and that would be a bad day. If you connect them in parallel, I think you would increase the available current. But there are a lot of caveats there and I wouldn't do it except with someone who actually knew what they were doing -- unlike me. :)

@@SoundVoltage okay cool. So you’re saying I should relax THAT much?
@SoundVoltage
@SoundVoltage Год назад
Well, I think you should relax about using power supplies as they are intended :) It's hard to cause too much damage -- it's been 1.5 years since I made that video and I haven't had a single problem (power-wise) in that time. It's worth paying attention and double checking, but don't live in fear. But I wouldn't suggest trying anything tricky like hooking up two power supplies to one set of busboards.

“It’s what all the cool kids are doing”?!! 😱 I nearly unsubscribed! (I’m so not a cool kid 😆) Great videos though, thanks - Euclidean rhythm one is what hooked me 😉
