Intro to Dealing with Current - How to Kayak

I finally get a chance to paddle with my favorite niece, Mercy Anne! She has been wanting to paddle with me for some time. Today was the day! She did fantastic! Mercy Anne was born deaf and has been overcoming obstacles her whole life. She is quite the fighter. I am not at all surprised at how well she did and how much fun we had. The rest of the crew also works on dealing with a high water boiling hole. With much more current than previous trips, they have to overcome their own fears and try to nail their lines. Kevin Champ, the Wondering Electrician, really makes some serious progress with handling heavier currents with ease, specifically carving and ferrying...come along and watch the crew take a few more strides of progress with their kayaking.
Special thanks to my sister Marie - owner/photographer at blinkofaneyephotographync.com/ for the fantastic photos! There were so many great photos of the day. It was difficult to select a few for the video.

Has to be my favorite video of yours to date, Pete. Watching the kids and seeing those smiles was just awesome. I love the adventurous spirit and the encouragement you give to everyone.

Awesome, Pete! We take things for granted everyday. I had never really thought about how hard kayaking would be without hearing. When you would cut to those clips from her vantage point, it was startling for me. Mercy Ann did an awesome job! She is awesome. I enjoyed the entire video, but especially her portions.

I love that you're taking the young kids out. I wish someone had taught me these things when I was a kid. This looks like so much fun but I'm already grown and set in my fear. I have nightmares about drowning.

Pete, I just sat down and watched this in it's entirety. This tugs my heart, because i'm deaf as well, moderately/severe. I can still hear the rushing of water but conversation at more than a couple feet away is pointless without aids. Cutting the audio to really show how someone completely deaf perceives things was wonderful. It also helps other paddlers understand a little better what us deaf people go through. I've paddled with people that don't seem to understand this and get frustrated dealing with communication issues. I make it a point to explain this when paddling with someone new. i'm done rambling on now :P

Thanks Peter! That is exactly what I was going for. Hopefully it can bring some awareness...

Awesome video! Pretty cool for your niece to have the nerve to go for a fun ride like that and also have people like you around that can make that happen. I've sometimes wondered if the noise of all the water splashing and flowing around you in a rapid might make you tense up a little more than if it were more muted?

It's been a while since I've watched one of your videos, I always enjoy them. I just got back out on lake Erie in Ohio. Enjoying the water and rivers by me. There are not to many white water areas by me, but the lake can get pretty rough. To cut to the chase, your videos make me want to try white water. I kayak a 18' sea kayak, so I would have to get another boat. I was thinking about a creeker. I wonder how well my skills on lake Erie would carry over to white water paddling. You've coached people. How do people like me generally do when going from open water to white water. I trust your knowledge
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 2 года назад
I think you will do fine! It is a lot more dynamic and input centric. Having paddled all kinds of boats, going from ww to anything else is the easiest, but you should be just fine!

Does the length of the kayak make it less responsive on white water ? Seems like a 12 or 15' kayak would ride more rigid and less responsive in turbulent water ?
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 3 года назад
Length will invariably lessen your maneuverability. I can aid in bridging holes though. Kind of a tradeoff I guess.
@atkinsoutdoors2746
@atkinsoutdoors2746 4 года назад
Are you telling them to raise their feet to keep from getting hung in a rock?
@RiverKingsKayak
@RiverKingsKayak 4 года назад
Yes, the instinct is to drop your feet and try to slow yourself down and gain control off the river bottom. However, one should Never do that in current. A foot entrapment is a very real possibility when doing that. Your foot will go down between two rocks, wedge on a rock in front and behind the foot and the current will lock you there submerging the rest of the body. Always keep your feet at the surface until the current subsides. When in an eddy or in manageable current, then stand up.
